The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the contributions of the concept of renaturalization, inspired by Spinoza's naturalism, to critical ecofeminism. Spinoza's philosophy is considered by contemporary ecofeminist thinkers to be very useful in providing solutions to the problems raised by environmental and feminist philosophy. In terms of redefining human nature and agency, renaturalization is instructive in determining humanity's place in the universe. The opposition of Spinoza's philosophy to the modern subject with the unity of mind and body is a consequence of his definition of "human being" in terms of the laws of nature that apply to every being. In contrast to the hierarchical construction of differences in dualist philosophy, renaturalization can be a solid basis for the construction of an interspecies ethics that accepts differences. In this context, the thesis aims to examine different approaches to interspecies relations and ethics by considering the contributions of renaturalization to critical ecofeminism in the context of the human-nature opposition, dualist debates, and the critique of female-nature identity

Aim: This study aimed to examine the relationship between the depression, chronotype and Dietary Inflammatory Index score in individuals diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Material and Methods: This study included 100 individuals with metabolic syndrome. The Depression-Anxiety Stress Scale was utilized to assess the depression, stress, and anxiety levels of the participants. Chronotypes were determined using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, and the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) was calculated based on a three-day food consumption record. Results: Of the participants, 53% were women and 47% were men. The depression (10.64±3.91), anxiety (10.38±3.51), and stress (13.12±3.89) scores were significantly higher in the "evening type" group. Female participants had significantly higher depression scores (9.68±4.39) compared to male participants (8.00±3.35) (p=0.033). Analysis of the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) scores revealed that women had a more pro-inflammatory diet (3.23±5.69). Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between depression scores and carbohydrate consumption (r=0.264, p=0.002), while a negative correlation was found with the percentage of protein intake (r=-0.336, p=0.001). Conclusion: The study revealed that the majority of individuals with metabolic syndrome exhibit an evening chronotype and are at increased risk for depression, anxiety, and stress. Additionally, it was found that these individuals tend to follow a pro-inflammatory diet. Therefore, it is recommended that the treatment of individuals with metabolic syndrome includes the assessment of their chronotypes, nutritional habits, and psychological states

A Computer-Aided Design Tool for Muqarnas

    No full text
In numerous instances of Islamic architecture, the geometric arrangement of muqarnas was established using square-rhombus tessellations in their flat projections. Similarly, in Turkiye, square-rhombus projection schemes have been employed in muqarnas designs since the era of the Anatolian Seljuks. This study introduces a computer-aided design (CAD) tool called Anatolian Muqarnas, which aims to recreate muqarnas schemes with square-rhombus projections. The tool is built upon a novel geometric analysis approach specifically tailored for Anatolian Seljuks muqarnas, drawing inspiration from Ammann-Beenker tiling and supertiles. Users of Anatolian Muqarnas can easily simulate existing or new designs by following predetermined rules. This contribution is expected to enhance discussions regarding the geometric analysis of muqarnas and the interplay between computing and cultural heritage at large.YOK 100/2000 Doctorate ProjectThe thesis was supported by the YOK 100/2000 Doctorate Project

Creating and Consuming Art in the Age of New Technologies

Bu bağlamda çalışmada, sanata ilişkin farklı yaklaşımlar üzerinden modern ve çağdaş sanatta değişen anlamları, sanatın nasıl bir tüketim nesnesi haline geldiği, Frankfurt Okulu’nun ve eleştirel teorisyenlerin sanatı bir çıkış yolu olarak görürken günümüzde yapay zekâ teknolojileri doğrultusunda sanatın nasıl kendi pazarını oluşturduğu ve öznesiz sanattaki anlam yitimi farklı başlıklar altında tartışılmaktadır.ABSTRACT: Art, evolving through various meanings, has formed a broad discussion area throughout the ages, and its visibility has increased with the advancement of technology. According to the Frankfurt School, art has integrated with commercial values, losing its impact. Art, losing its meaning in the capitalist market, has responded to individuals’ desires for ownership as a commodity. Artificial intelligence has profoundly shaken the meaning of art, presenting a utopia where anyone can be an artist as long as they give the right commands, making it livable. In this context, the study discusses the changing meanings of modern and contemporary art through different approaches, how art has become a commodity, the views of the Frankfurt School and critical theorists considering art as an exit strategy, and how art creates its own market through artificial intelligence technologies today, all under different headings addressing the loss of meaning in art without a subject

Prosody of focus in Turkish Sign Language

Prosodic realization of focus has been a widely investigated topic across languages and modalities. Simultaneous focus strategies are intriguing to see how they interact regarding their functional and temporal alignment. We explored the multichannel (manual and nonmanual) realization of focus in Turkish Sign Language. We elicited data with focus type, syntactic roles and movement type variables from 20 signers. The results revealed the focus is encoded via increased duration in manual signs, and nonmanuals do not necessarily accompany focused signs. With a multichanneled structure, sign languages use two available channels or opt for one to express focushood.BAGEP Award of the Science AcademyThis work was supported by the BAGEP Award of the Science Academy given to Asli Gurer

    Introduction: Doing and being together

    No full text
How do we act, think, produce, or do research together, and how do we understand this togetherness from a media studies perspective? How can joint motivations be combined to create knowledge that spans the sum of individual intentions? While bringing together various subfields within and cases from media studies, this collection rethinks how scholarly endeavours feature different ways of doing and being together, identifying new and more diverse communicative spaces, challenging dichotomies, and encouraging critical perspectives. Taking a colloquial understanding of doing and being together as a facilitator of encounter among scholars and various other agents, such as civil society organisations, artists, and practitioners, the authors of this edited collection embrace vast connotations of media studies - from actions building connections across research and practice to transdisciplinary methodologies promoting new ways of togetherness through analogue and digital realms. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Begüm Irmak, Can Koçak, Onur Sesigür and Nazan Haydari; individual chapters, the contributors

    No full text
Background: Presence of pes planus is known to effect balance. In this study, it was aimed to examine the immediate effects of IASTM and PMT on static and dynamic balance in young adults with pes planus. Method: The navicular drop test was used to diagnose pes planus. 51 individuals were included in the study and divided into three groups [IASTM (n:15), percussive massage (n:18) and control (n:18) groups] by simple randomization. Flamingo and Y Balance test was assessed before and immediately after intervention. Repeated Measures ANOVA test was used for the intergroup comparison, and the One-Way ANOVA test was used for the intragroup comparison, also post-hoc test with Tukey correction was performed. Results: There was no significant difference in static balance between the three groups (p > 0.05). There was a significant difference in dynamic balance between groups (p < 0.05). Only IASTM group had significant differences at before and after intervention of all directions except for posterolateral direction of Y Balance Test (p < 0.05). Conclusion: IASTM applied to the plantar fascia of individuals with pes planus have immediate effects on dynamic balance when compared to no intervention and percussive massage even within a small sample size. © 2024 Elsevier Lt

Leftist ad-persons and their creative craft: the formation of the advertising field in Turkey from the 1960s to 1980s

    No full text
A socialist advertiser/ adperson sounds very much like a contradiction. However, Turkish advertising was formed as a field from the 1960s to late 1980s by left leaning intellectuals and literary figures associated with the dominant socialist political party of the time. While entrepreneurial and profit-oriented agents were significant initiators, the field was essentially shaped by leftist/ socialist adpersons along with established/ entrepreneurial agents and entered into competition with such profit-oriented actors. Such competition, combined at times with cooperation, led to the creation of a field in the Bourdieusian sense. Thus, analysing the formation of the field, we can go beyond conceptualizing adpersons as mere cultural intermediaries and understand advertising as a social space in which multiple capitals operate. This allows us to reflect on the un(der)theorized work of left(ists) in the making of consumer capitalism during the post war period in Turkey

A mixed-frequency VAR application to studying joint dynamics of foreign investor trading and stock market returns

    No full text
We present the first application of the mixed-frequency VAR (MF-VAR) method in the market microstructure literature, studying the interaction between stock market returns and foreign investors' trading. MF-VAR allows us to use daily investor trading data together with higher-frequency return series and uncover novel intraday patterns in the feedback trading behavior and the information content of trading. Using data from Korea, we find that foreign investors chase opening-hour returns, and their trading has the ability to forecast subsequent days' late-hour returns. This pattern suggests that foreign investors selectively respond to the information incorporated during opening hours. Over the years, foreign investors' response to intraday returns has become more prompt, and the predictive ability of their trading has disappeared. A specific test made feasible by the MF-VAR method does not support the global private information hypothesis.Univerzita Karlova v PrazeNo Statement Availabl
