Economic policy uncertainty and bank stability: Size, capital, and liquidity matter

    No full text
We examine the impact of economic policy uncertainty on bank stability post-2007-2008 global financial crisis and how bank size, capital, and liquidity mitigate this relationship. We use 176,477 quarterly observations for US commercial banks over the period from 2011Q1 to 2020Q3 and find consistent and robust evidence that bank stability decreases as the level of economic policy uncertainty increases. We show that bank size, capital, and liquidity matter, i.e., the negative impact of policy uncertainty on bank stability is stronger for larger banks and weaker for highly capitalized banks as well as for more liquid banks. Our channel analysis shows that the increase in the level and volatility of lending and deposit rates, and the decrease in risk-adjusted capitalization and risk-adjusted profitability might to some extent explain the decrease in bank stability in times of higher economic policy uncertainty. Additional analysis reveals that higher market power mitigates the negative impact of EPU on bank stability. Our findings support the Basel II and III regulatory reforms aimed at tightening the capital levels with stricter rules for the larger banks and the implementation of the newly introduced liquidity rules

Constacyclic locally recoverable codes from their duals

    No full text
A code has locality r if a symbol in any coordinate of a codeword in the code can be recovered by accessing the value of at most r other coordinates. Such codes are called locally recoverable codes (LRCs for short). Since LRCs can recover a failed node by accessing the minimum number of the surviving nodes, these codes are used in distributed storage systems such as Microsoft Azure. In this paper, constacyclic LRCs are obtained from their parity-check polynomials. Constacyclic codes with locality r <= 2 \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}r2r\le 2\end{document} and dimension 2 are obtained and a sufficient and necessary condition for these codes to have locality 1 is given. Then, the construction is generalized. Distance optimal constacyclic LRCs with distance 2 are obtained. Also, constacyclic codes with locality 1 are constructed. They may be so useful in practice thanks to their minimum locality. Constacyclic codes whose locality is equal to their dimension are given. Furthermore, constacyclic LRCs are obtained from cyclotomic cosets.Yildiz Technical University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Department [FYL-2023-5605]; Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK) [BIDEB-2210]This research was supported by the Yildiz Technical University Scientific Research Projects Coordination Department (Project Number: FYL-2023-5605) and first author is partially supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBITAK) (Grant Number: BIDEB-2210). The artist’s book: Working towards a collaborative methodology in art and design

    No full text
The working methodologies of visual art and visual communication design are often distinctive and require different skill sets, even though art and design disciplines are similar in many ways. For instance, in exhibiting and promoting an artwork, a level of collaboration must be established between the visual artist and the visual communication designer, which demands interdisciplinarity. This chapter, firstly, addresses the interdisciplinarity of art and design by opening the historically maintained hierarchical structure among those disciplines into a discussion for a collaborative working methodology. The second part focuses on the artist’s book as a medium and as a significant space in exhibiting and promoting the artwork to build dialogue and collaboration through a case study of an actual artist’s book created by an artist and a designer in three steps of research, analysis, and production. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Begüm Irmak, Can Koçak, Onur Sesigür and Nazan Haydari; individual chapters, the contributors

Tumor Mutation Burden as a Cornerstone in Precision Oncology Landscapes: Effect of Panel Size and Uncertainty in Cutoffs

    No full text
Tumor mutation burden (TMB) has profound implications for personalized cancer therapy, particularly immunotherapy. However, the size of the panel and the cutoff values for an accurate determination of TMB are still controversial. In this study, a pan-cancer analysis was performed on 22 cancer types from The Cancer Genome Atlas. The efficiency of gene panels of different sizes and the effect of cutoff values in accurate TMB determination was assessed on a large cohort using Whole Exome Sequencing data (n = 9929 patients) as the gold standard. Gene panels of four different sizes (i.e., 0.44-2.54 Mb) were selected for comparative analyses. The heterogeneity of TMB within and between cancer types is observed to be very high, and it becomes possible to obtain the exact TMB value as the size of the panel increases. In panels with limited size, it is particularly difficult to recognize patients with low TMB. In addition, the use of a general TMB cutoff can be quite misleading. The optimal cutoff value varies between 5 and 20, depending on the TMB distribution of the different tumor types. The use of comprehensive gene panels and the optimization of TMB cutoff values for different cancer types can make TMB a robust biomarker in precision oncology. Moreover, optimization of TMB can help accelerate translational medicine research, and by extension, delivery of personalized cancer care in the future.Marmara University Scientific Research Projects Committee [FYL-2022-10758]This work was supported by Marmara University Scientific Research Projects Committee through grant number FYL-2022-10758

METAMORPHOSIS FROM BEHIND THE BARS: SELAHATTİN DEMİRTAŞ’S LEYLAN

This article examines the Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtaş’s prison novel Leylan (2OI9) in relation to the Turkish tradition of Künstlerroman, which dates back to the late nineteenth century.Through a reading of the figure of the writer manqué,it argues that Demirtaş occupies an unprecedented place in having staged the writer manqué as a subaltern autodidact rather than as a troubled intellectual,in uniting the political and the transcendental, and in affirming the potential hidden in incomplete texts and lives. © 2024 Penn State University Press. Grief Process of a Single Parent Family with a Father and Two Adolescent Daughters After the Loss of Mother: A Case Study in Turkey

    No full text
The death of a family member is an important life event for the family and brings lots of different changes in the family members' and family's life. Every family was affected differently by the death and each family's experience about the death is unique. This research tried to understand the case of a Turkish family's interchangeable dynamics after the loss of the mother. Inductive Thematic Analysis (TA) was used to understand their dynamics. The therapy process consisted of 38 sessions. Selective coding was used, and the sessions were chosen by looking at two criteria. Firstly, all the family members presented at the sessions and then, they talked about the grief process or the deceased. Two main themes were found at the end of analysis: 1) ''The Enmeshed Relationship'' and 2) ''Processing the Difficult Emotions''. The result revealed that grief can be seen as a family process which includes both intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships. The research indicated that the culture and religion were inseparable parts of grief and additional stressors affected the process. This research provided an in-depth perspective of a Turkish family's grief process during COVID-19 pandemic. Implications for clinicians working with families during grief process were discussed

Isometries of length 1 in purely loxodromic free kleinian groups and trace inequalities

    No full text
In this paper, we prove a generalization of a discreteness criteria for a large class of subgroups of PSL 2(C). In particular, given a finitely generated purely loxodromic free Kleinian group Gamma = for n >= 2, we show that |trace(2) (xi(i)) - 4| + |trace(xi(i)xi(j)xi(-1)(i) xi(-1)(j)) - 2| >= 2 sinh(2) ( 1/4 log alpha(n)) for some xi(i) and xi(j) for i not equal j in Gamma provided that certain conditions on the hyperbolic displacements given by xi(i), xi(j) and their length 3 conjugates formed by the generators are satisfied. Above, the constant alpha(n) turns out to be the real root strictly larger than (2n-1)(2) of a fourth degree integer coefficient polynomial obtained by solving a family of optimization problems via the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker theory. The use of this theory in the context of hyperbolic geometry is another novelty of this work

In a world with limited resources, it is crucial for individuals to utilise shared systems and develop strategies to optimise their usage. To cope with this, 'servicizing' has emerged as a rapidly growing promising solution, especially in car-sharing systems. These systems can be split into two: station-based and free-floating. The latter introduces more flexibility to the customers as free-floating systems allow users to pick up and drop off vehicles anywhere within predetermined operational zones. This flexibility may come with an additional cost by bringing a potential imbalance between demand and supply. This imbalance can harm the company's profitability and customer satisfaction. In this study, the imbalance problem of the system of free-floating car sharing is considered. A mixed integer linear programming model is developed and tested with real data for free floating car sharing systems to solve this problem. The proposed system consists of four modules: clustering, forecasting, optimization model, and relocation strategy. According to the results, it is observed that the system is more balanced with satisfying 9% more demand and more profitable with earning 6% more. The study was conducted on a car-sharing company that is based in Istanbul, but the results can be applied to any free-floating car-sharing system. This ensures customer satisfaction by meeting demand and balancing the system

Anahtar Kelimeler: Ekofeminizm, İklim Aktivizmi, Kadın, Doğa, İklim DeğişimiClimate change has been one of the biggest challenges facing humanity in the modern era. It has now become the norm to hear frequent news stories from around the world about disasters and extreme weather events due to a result of worsening climate change that is impacting severely the environment and the lives of many species. Everyday more people join the climate movement to put pressure on governments, companies, and business leaders to take action in fighting climate change. Yet, especially women are at the forefront of fights for climate justice and their climate activism attracts wide publicity in the press. The voices of women climate activists are becoming more vocal all around the world. Ecofeminism is broadly defined as a school of thought, which looks for links between nature and women. With this in mind, this thesis attempts to understand the motivations and concerns of women lying behind their climate activism from the standpoint of ecofeminism. I believe the ecofeminist perspective will provide a strong foundation to better understand the women-nature relationship and their inclination for climate activism. In this thesis the narratives of prominent female climate activists and cases of women's resistance against the environmental crisis in Türkiye, namely İkizdere, Rize and Ida Mountain resistance will be examined to better understand women's concerns and motivations. The narratives of selected women climate activists and other cases about women's resistance against the environmental crisis referred to are collected from random news sources that are available online to the public. When these narratives and cases are analysed, it is possible to detect their connection with ecofeminist philosophy whether it is intended or unintended. This thesis focuses on the possibility for building a closer connection between ecofeminism and women climate activism. Therefore, in this thesis I use mixed methods by conducting a literature review, desk research, as well as discourse analysis of selected news items and cases of women in climate activism, their environmental movements, and motivations for activism. At this point, various regulatory measures are taken to prevent individuals from being affected by the problems created by the data-driven economy. The right to data portability, which is one of the innovations introduced by the European Union General Data Protection Regulation in order to increase individuals' control over their personal data, is one of these measures. Thanks to this right, individuals have the opportunity to control their own data and actively participate in data processing processes. It can also be said that service providers will offer more innovative and user-friendly services as it becomes easier for individuals to switch to different services. In this study, the content of the right to data portability introduced by the European Union General Data Protection Regulation and the effects of this right in the data-driven economy were examined.
