Considering it is easier to reflect their inner worlds with drawings rather than words, comprehension of children's attachment quality and mentalization capacity based on their creative language is valuable despite being overlooked in research. The relationships between children's House-Tree-Person (H-T-P) drawings and attachment security, attachment stles and mentalization capacity were explored in the current study with 85 participants aged 6-12. Attachment security and prototypes were assessed by ASCT whereas mentalization capacity was assessed by application of the coding system for Mental State Talk (CS-MST) to the narratives within ASCT. To evaluate H-T-P drawings quantitatively, a novel scoring manual with seven dimensions (line quality, size, location, level of detail, bizare items and negative facial expressions) was developed. Along with testing the manual's reliability, in the present study, it was hypothesized that attachment security and mentalization capacity would predict H-T-P scores, and, relatedly there would be differences regarding H-T-P scores of children with different attachment protototypes. Age, gender, intelligence, and problematic behaviors were controlled in analyses. Although the results were not supportive of attachment security and mentalization's predictive power, insecure attachment was linked to more simplified drawings while higher MST was linked to more detailed drawings. Moreover, lower MST was also linked with smaller figure size. It was lastly found that anxiously attached children had more details in their drawings compared to others. Overall, H-T-P scores were shown to be reliable and valid indicators of attachment and mentalization. The findings are discussed elaborately, with a focus on clinical implications and limitations

The main objective of this thesis to investigate and analyze the crucial factors affecting international students' choice of a particular university to study in Türkiye. This study explored the decision factors affecting international students' decision to study at selected foundation universities in Istanbul, Türkiye. Data were collected through the online survey method, and the questions were asked to the participating international students studying in foundation universities in Istanbul. All data was collected through this survey created in Google Forms. The questionnaire was created considering the literature review. The online survey was distributed via email, and a total of 185 students participated in the online survey. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the evaluation data. According to analyses, the most critical factors in choosing their current institution in Istanbul are Cost of Living, Institutional Reputation, Academic Quality, Institutional Cost of Attendance, and Negative Word of Mouth. On the other hand, advertising, positive word of mouth, and family word of mouth are not so significant to choosing a university in Türkiye for international students. The analysis results also vary depending on male and female students, and it has been revealed that female students take the cost of living, institutional attendance cost, and the impact of social media into consideration more than male students when choosing a university

International migration and the NGOs working in the field of migration in Turkey

    No full text
This study aims to analyse the activities and discourses of the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the field of migration in Turkey. The research explores how the NGOs frame the issue of migration differently and how they define and comprehend migration, migrants, and refugees. The article discusses whether the NGOs view refugees as subjects needing help, support, and protection or as actors who have rights and must be empowered and argues that there is tension between the two approaches. These points are discussed through a field study, conducted in 2020 (between February and April), comprising in-depth interviews with representatives of 13 NGOs working in the field of migration. The study points to structural, historical, and conjectural causes and aspects of the weakness of rights-based attitudes and activities among the NGOs working in the field of migration in Turkey. The article finds out that the actions of the NGOs working in the field of migration are concentrated on the basic needs of refugees, and structural limitations, such as political pressure, political polarization, and capacity problems, push the NGOs to evaluate the issue of migration within relatively narrow frames. The article also stresses the importance of an enabling political and legal environment and a coherent and structured communication strategy to promote a rights-based migration agenda.Trkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arascedil;timath;rma KurumuNo Statement Availabl

High data rate and energy efficient configurable IR-UWB transmitter with an integrated balun

    No full text
This paper presents a novel, digitally configurable, switching oscillator-based impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) transmitter that is robust to process variations. The pulse width and pulse position properties of the output waveform are configurable to ensure operation for the desired bandwidth and output pulse energy values. The architecture is based on a cross-coupled LC voltage-controlled oscillator (LC VCO) implemented with a custom-designed on-chip balun at a center frequency of 2.4 GHz. With the usage of this on-chip balun, the need for an extra buffer stage is eliminated, and the highest possible efficiency is achieved with the proper turns ratio selected. The generated digital control pulse signals are also used to ensure fast start-up and UWB operation while maintaining low power consumption with an implemented on/off tail switching scheme. The presented IR-UWB transmitter that occupies a total area of 0.35 mm2 is fabricated in the United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) 180-nm mixed-mode/radio frequency (RF) CMOS process. The measured output voltage swing of the fabricated transmitter is 0.812 V on a 50-? load for the 200 Mb/s data rate, and the bandwidth is measured as 902 MHz. The achieved frequency tuning range is 1 GHz and the fabricated transmitter can drive 50 ?, 75 ? and 100 ? loads with measured efficiency values 4.16%, 5.76%, and 4.05%, respectively. Compared to other works in the literature, this design achieves a higher output pulse energy at a higher data rate while maintaining low power consumption and, thus, high efficiency. © 2024 Elsevier Gmb

The role of Turkey- EU relations and Turkey- to- Europe emigration experience in the treatment of Syrians in Turkey

    No full text
The essential factors that guide the way Turkey has treated Syrian refugees under temporary protection in the past are the Turkish state’s willingness to become a soft power in the region; Turkey’s experience of emigration to Western European countries, particularly to Germany; the Europeanization of Turkish migration and asylum policies and laws; migration diplomacy; and neo-Ottomanism and Islamist mythology during the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). Based on this premise, this chapter examines how these factors guide the ways in which actors of the Turkish state and Turkish civil society have been treating Syrian refugees since the beginning of the mass migration process in 2011. Drawing on earlier work by the author on the Europeanization of Turkish migration and asylum policies and laws, as well as on emigration from Turkey to Europe, this chapter examines what role Turkey-EU migration history and Turkey-EU relations play in the way Syrian refugees are treated in Turkey. In addition, it sheds light on the role of a number of other relevant, even decisive, factors, including soft-power aspirations, Islamist mythology, neo-Ottomanism and migration diplomacy. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Berna Şafak Zülfikar Savcı, Ludger Pries, and M. Responsible Artificial Intelligence in The Axis of Fine Arts: Potential Risks and Ethical Dimensions

Ayrıca, toplumsal değerleri ve etik standartları koruma amacıyla uygun politika ve yönergelerin uygulanması gerektiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.ABSTRACT: Today, many people, from artists and designers to amateur users, have started to benefit from artificial intelligence production. Humanity is now faced with artificial intelligence that can create similar art and design products that emerge as a result of long-term studies in minutes or even seconds. Artificial intelligence derives this ability from databases containing billions of visual/audio elements, as well as strong technological infrastructures. This situation brings up many questions. The use of artificial intelligence in the field of fine arts can contribute to the creative process, but can also lead to potential risks and ethical (copyrights, transparency, data management, etc.) dimensions. This article discusses the relationship between artificial intelligence and responsible artificial intelligence by considering it as a Fine Arts example. In the article, it is emphasized that the concept of responsible artificial intelligence should also come to the fore in the field of fine arts, and that cooperation between artists/designers, technologists and decision makers is important in order to be responsible in the use of artificial intelligence against potential risks and ethical dimensions. Additionally, it was concluded that appropriate policies and guidelines should be implemented in order to protect social values and ethical standards

Transport-controlled growth decoupling for self-induced protein expression with a glycerol-repressible genetic circuit

    No full text
Decoupling cell formation from recombinant protein synthesis is a potent strategy to intensify bioprocesses. Escherichia coli strains with mutations in the glucose uptake components lack catabolite repression, display low growth rate, no overflow metabolism, and high recombinant protein yields. Fast growth rates were promoted by the simultaneous consumption of glucose and glycerol, and this was followed by a phase of slow growth, when only glucose remained in the medium. A glycerol-repressible genetic circuit was designed to autonomously induce recombinant protein expression. The engineered strain bearing the genetic circuit was cultured in 3.9 g L-1 glycerol + 18 g L-1 glucose in microbioreactors with online oxygen transfer rate monitoring. The growth was fast during the simultaneous consumption of both carbon sources (C-sources), while expression of the recombinant protein was low. When glycerol was depleted, the growth rate decreased, and the specific fluorescence reached values 17% higher than those obtained with a strong constitutive promoter. Despite the relatively high amount of C-source used, no oxygen limitation was observed. The proposed approach eliminates the need for the substrate feeding or inducers addition and is set as a simple batch culture while mimicking fed-batch performance. The authors propose a strategy that combines cell engineering and genetic circuit design to decouple growth rate from recombinant protein expression based on the carbon source transport. A simple batch scheme allows autoinduction and growth rate shift, mimicking a fed-batch mode. The results are potentially useful for product and process development. imageConsejo Nacional de Humanidades, Ciencias y Tecnologas [A1-S-8646]; Exploratory Research Space, RWTH Aachen UniversityThis work was supported by CONAHCyT grant A1-S-8646 and the Exploratory Research Space, RWTH Aachen University

Development of an early warning system for higher education institutions by predicting first-year student academic performance

    No full text
In this study, an early warning system predicting first-year undergraduate student academic performance is developed for higher education institutions. The significant factors that affect first-year student success are derived and discussed such that they can be used for policy developments by related bodies. The dataset used in experimental analyses includes 11,698 freshman students' data. The problem is constructed as classification models predicting whether a student will be successful or unsuccessful at the end of the first year. A total of 69 input variables are utilized in the models. Naive Bayes, decision tree and random forest algorithms are compared over model prediction performances. Random forest models outperformed others and reached 90.2% accuracy. Findings show that the models including the fall semester CGPA variable performed dramatically better. Moreover, the student's programme name and university placement exam score are identified as the other most significant variables. A critical discussion based on the findings is provided. The developed model may be used as an early warning system, such that necessary actions can be taken after the second week of the spring semester for students predicted to be unsuccessful to increase their success and prevent attrition

Transmedia charity initiatives in Turkey: The case of Adım Adım

    No full text
Civil society organisations are an essential part of democratic life in Turkey. Within a climate of disinterest, distrust and fear towards giving, the way forward is based on the empowerment of engaged individuals and the organisation of civil society. It is equally critical that active citizens collaborate with civil society organisations to mobilise civil society and raise awareness of its potential. It is, therefore, necessary to develop communication systems that will facilitate being and doing together. This research herewith delves into Turkey’s donation culture with a focus on transmediality. It bases its framework on Freeman’s transmedia charity model and the Adım Adım (Step by Step) charity platform in Turkey, exploring tangible sub-layers to the concepts of community media (circulation, close encounter, solidarity, empowerment, longevity), participation media (merchandising, donating, volunteering, creating and sharing stories, holding events and meetings) and documentary media (performance, links, messages, themes, archive and reporting). It investigates whether the transmedia charity can aid in developing a sustainable donation system that motivates individuals and civil society to work together to achieve their goals. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Begüm Irmak, Can Koçak, Onur Sesigür and Nazan Haydari; individual chapters, the contributors
