On classification of sequences containing arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions

    No full text
In this paper, we study the classification of sequences containing arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. First, we deal with the question how the polynomial map n(s) can be extended so that it contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Under some growth conditions, we construct sequences which contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Also, we give a uniform and explicit arithmetic progression rank bound for a large class of sequences. Consequently, a dichotomy result is deduced on the finiteness of the arithmetic progression rank of certain sequences. Therefore, in this paper, we see a way to determine the finiteness of the arithmetic progression rank of various sequences satisfying some growth conditions

Aksaray University;IEEE Seccion Espana;University de La Laguna2023 International Conference on Electrical, Computer, Communications and Mechatronics Engineering, ICECCME 2023 -- 19 July 2023 through 21 July 2023 -- -- 192890The analysis of facial expressions is a powerful tool to decode nonverbal behavior in humans. Due to its importance, several studies have already been done in the past. However, facial expression recognition on wild and multi-label faces is under-investigated also due to the limited number of available databases. This paper fills in the current lack by challenging the RAF-ML dataset and fixing the state-of-the-art performance of 50.5% on the "single label experiment". The proposed method is also tested in a second experiment, suggested by this work, which considers only wild faces having a dominant expression. The benchmark performance for the second trial is 56.1%. The deep-learning algorithms presented in this work are described in detail to facilitate their reproduction. © 2023 IEEE

The image of the idealized architect in history and the case of Sedad Hakkı Eldem

50 seneyi bulan çalışma dönemi içinde mimari dinamiklerin sorunsallaştırıldığı her tartışma ortamında zaman zaman takdir gören, zaman zamansa yerilen başat aktörü olarak yer bulmuştur. Bu nedenle tarihyazımında Sedad Hakkı Eldem kimliğinin hangi etmenler üzerinden inşa edildiğini, Sedad Hakkı Eldem üzerine yazılan metinlerin hangi psikolojik etmenler ve motivasyonlarca üretildiğini açığa çıkarmaya dair bir değerlendirme ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır.ABSTRACT: In architectural historiographic practice, it is quite common to elevate and idealize architectural subjects by attributing them with divine qualities, creating historical personality cults with imagery such as greatness, genius, and heroism. The construction of an elevated hero cult can be defined as a tool utilized by societies or specific groups to define their identities, and throughout history, it has been a frequently employed practice worldwide. The tendency to define the ideal qualities, character, and behavioral patterns of the architectural identity through images of heroic and genius individuals signifies a societal ideal, which history presents to its audience through storytelling. However, presenting these overly idealized qualities as inherent values of the architectural identity, detached from reality, is a problematic approach. Sedad Hakkı Eldem, one of the most significant figures in the history of Turkish architecture, has not only shaped the architectural scene in Turkey through his works, research, and written texts but has also become a cult figure in Turkish architectural history due to his influential persona and the historiographic identity he began constructing even during his lifetime. Throughout his career spanning over 50 years, he has been both praised and criticized as a leading figure in every discussion that problematizes architectural dynamics. Discussing Eldem as one of the actors who have played a role in Turkish architectural history, by focusing on his subjective experiences, life, and works, was not enough; narratives have been constructed to explore how he influenced the society to which he belonged within the assigned historical roles. He is considered “the first modernist”, “the first Turkish architect" embodying the definition of uomo universale, and the “pioneer” responsible for the essential issue of national architecture in Turkey. However, this study aims to problematize the persistent attitude of presenting Sedad Hakkı Eldem as the "first/sole" figure while neglecting many other architects and artists. Therefore, an evaluation is attempted to uncover the factors on which the identity of Sedad Hakkı Eldem is constructed in historiography and to reveal the psychological factors and motivations behind the texts written about him

Data-driven building energy benchmark modeling for bank branches under different climate conditions

    No full text
Energy benchmarking in buildings is a significant analytical method to determine and classify the energy performance of buildings. The objective of the present paper is to establish a compre-hensive data-driven energy benchmark model for banking buildings. In this context, 587 bank branches are selected to cover every climatic region in Turkey, with more than 210,000 data obtained from the installed energy analyzers and building energy audits. A mathematical model is developed and verified to define the EUI of the existing bank branches. Calculated energy scores and benchmark study implied an energy efficiency potential across the sector. Investigating the results of underperforming buildings, the building shell and construction date are found to be significant. As results indicated an efficiency potential, a scenario-based energy benchmark model is proposed based on the new insulation regulations in Turkey to see the possible energy con-sumption and carbon gas emission reductions. The developed model is adapted to the scenario -based model by revising U-values concerning the regulation and climate zones. The scenario -based strategy has led to a 2136.7 MWh/year reduction in energy consumption. The total EUI was found to decrease from 159.44 to 124.35 kWh/m2year, also resulting in a 20.5% improve-ment equal to 2057.3 equivalent tons of CO2/year in annual GHG emissions with the application of new regulations.REENGEN Energy Technologies IncAcknowledgement The authors would like to appreciate REENGEN Energy Technologies Inc. who helped to provide data in the study. Estradiol (E2), a follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), AMH, and inhibin B levels, along with AFC and MOV, are used to determine ovarian reserve in pre-menopausal women. Studies have shown that AMH levels are more sensitive than those of E2, FSH, and inhibin B and that AFC and MOV can be used to evaluate ovarian reserve. AMH, AFC, and MOV measurements were performed before and after adjuvant SC in 3-month periods for one year. Patients were classified as experiencing chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea (CIA) if they did not have menstrual cycles for a period of six months or longer following the conclusion of their chemotherapy treatment. We aimed to evaluate the factors affecting chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea in breast cancer patients treated with adjuvant chemotherapy and the performance of baseline measurements of AMH, AFC, and MOV to predict chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea. The effects of different chemotherapy regimens on the AMH level, AFC, and MOV in CIA patients were investigated. Seventy-one patients were eligible for this study, and the median age was 38 years (range: 23–45). The median follow-up was 37 months (range: 20–51), and CIA developed in 62% of the patients. The AMH level and AFC were significantly decreased one year after SC (p < 0.0001), whereas MOV was not (p = 0.507). AMH levels before chemotherapy (median: 1.520 vs. 0.755, p = 0.001) and at the end of the first year (median: 0.073 vs. 0.010, p = 0.030) and pre-treatment AFC (median: 12 vs. 4.50, p = 0.026) were lower in patients with CIA compared to those without CIA. The AMH levels before SC were the most valuable and earliest factor for predicting CIA development. In addition, there was no difference between the chemotherapy regimens (including or not including taxane) in terms of CIA development

The Nature of Schadenfreude in Consumption Contexts: A Systematic Literature Review

    No full text
This study aims to present a holistic perspective on schadenfreude in the context of consumption and to provide a framework that theoretically explains the social-psychological mechanisms behind consumers' schadenfreude. For this purpose, a systematic literature review integrating studies on schadenfreude in the context of consumption has been conducted in our current study. A systematic literature review that integrates studies on schadenfreude in consumption contexts is employed. Drawing on appraisal theory and social comparison framework, a general overarching framework explaining the market and consumption-related mechanisms that elicit schadenfreude and its consumer and brand-related outcomes is suggested. We argue that the elicitation of consumer schadenfreude is dependent on the appraisal of social comparisons. In this framework, the roles of the market and consumption-related factors behind the schadenfreude elicitation, uncovering the general appraisal structure behind this emotion are explained. By doing this, implications for the firms on how to manage this emotion in the marketplace and the potential consequences of schadenfreude emotion on different types of brand-related outcomes are provided

Dynamic Relations Between Mentalization Techniques and Therapeutic Alliance in Psychodynamic Child Therapy: An Evidence-Based Case Study

    No full text
Therapeutic alliance and mentalization are common factors inherent to all effective treatments. Mentalization-based interventions have the potential to create a safe relationship, which makes further mentalizing interventions possible. However, to date, no study has examined the bidirectional relationship between these variables in child psychotherapy. In an evidence-based case study design, psychodynamic therapy processes of two Turkish children (age: 9 and 10 years) who presented with social withdrawal problems were compared. All their sessions (34 sessions from Case No. 1 and 31 from Case No. 2) were coded using the Therapy Process Observational Coding System-Alliance Scale and Mentalization-Based Treatment for Children Adherence Scale. Outcome scales pertaining to symptoms, attachment, and mentalization were administered at baseline and at termination. Time-series Granger Causality tests revealed that in the case with clinically significant outcome, mentalization techniques predicted therapeutic alliance in the subsequent sessions, which predicted the use of further mentalization interventions. However, this relationship was not supported in the case with no significant improvement. Selected sessions were clinically analyzed with verbatim session vignettes. Our findings indicate that mentalization techniques in child therapy are closely related to the therapeutic relationship.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey [215 K 180]The data collection in this project was partially supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey Project No: 215 K 180. Electrophysiological Techniques for Studying Tactile Perception in Rats

    No full text
Neurons communicate by electrical and chemical signals. Neurophysiological studies measuring and manipulating these signals are therefore of utmost importance to understand neural function. In this chapter, we review an extensive set of tools used in our laboratory to study tactile processing in rats. After a very brief summary of the anatomy and physiology of the sense of touch, instrumentation for generating mechanical stimuli is covered in detail. Next, techniques for studying mechanoreceptive afferents are presented. Remaining sections include electroencephalography (EEG), electrocorticography (EcoG), local field potentials (LFP), and extracellular spike recordings for the brain. Acute and chronic preparations for recording from the somatosensory cortex are reviewed in line with the current state-of-the-art technology for electrodes and equipment. Dedicated sections are devoted to electrical microstimulation of neural tissue and microinjection of drugs, which allow manipulation of the somatosensory system for basic and applied research. The material presented in this chapter is also useful for guiding neural engineering applications such as neuroprostheses and brain-machine interfaces (BMI), at their initial developmental stages. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature
