Higher education institutions have undergone significant transformations due to external pressures, including macroeconomic factors, inclusivity and equity, technology developments, and regulation.
These external pressures have caused HE institutions to rethink their organisational structures, policies, research, and teaching and learning practices to meet stakeholders’ needs.
One of the growing creative initiatives is through the collaboration between students and staff members, which is crucial for creating dynamic and responsive educational environments and enhancing the student learning experience
National guidelines on AI governance and ethics
On September 20, 2024, Malaysia's Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) released the National Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics Guidelines (AIGE) to ensure responsible AI use. The guidelines target end users, policymakers, and AI sector players, emphasizing rights, consumer protection, and best practices for AI adoption. Policymakers are advised to create a human-centric AI governance framework, while developers should uphold ethical standards, ensure fairness, and share data. The guidelines aim to balance innovation with accountability and minimize AI risks
Zirconia-calcium silicate bioactive composites for dental applications using DLP additive manufacturing
Zirconia has outstanding mechanical strength which made it a favourable material dental implants material. However, its use is limited by challenges in bone bonding and elasticity. This paper introduces a novel bioprinting ceramic material by mixing calcium silicate with zirconia to enhance bioactivity. Using the high precision and speed of Digital Light Processing (DLP), this study develops a novel zirconia-calcium silicate slurry for dental applications. The study reports the preparation of zirconia-calcium silicate, formulation of resin compositions, and optimization of the bioprinting, debinding and sintering. Employing a full factorial Design of Experiments (DOE), a systematic approach was implemented to identify optimal printing conditions such as the layer thickness, exposure time, and power. The results show that slurries formulated with BYK-111 as the dispersant and ACMO/PEGDA/TPO resin, coupled with 80 wt.% solid loading, achieved the most favourable rheological properties, cure depth, and printing accuracy. The optimal printing conditions were 0.75 s exposure time, 300% exposure power, and 30 µm layer thickness, ensured a relative density of the sintered implants exceeding 95%. This study advances dental implant materials by introducing a novel DLP biomaterial with a slurry formulation, presenting significant implications for clinical applications and future research in developing advanced dental and medical implants
The generational shift towards the reciprocal disclosure of intimacy in daughter–father relationships through physical activity in the UK
Within family sociology during the past 30 years, while a general consensus has developed that most parents and children in the Western world have come to share relationships characterised by a greater degree of intimate disclosure, the extent to which parent–child relationships have become ‘purer’ and more egalitarian remains a contested issue. Although there has been a developing interest in involved fathering through sport and physical activity over the past decade, research has yet to concentrate on the consequences of this transformation for daughters. This article applies Mannheim’s tenet of generation entelechy to life history interviews with 14 women born between 1950 and 1994 to argue that involved fathering through physical activity offers conditions for daughters to realise a long-held desire to establish more emotionally reciprocated intimate bonds with fathers. Daughters described a shift from viewing fathers as emotionally uninvolved workers to becoming interdependent intimates
The impact of new-onset atrial fibrillation in the setting of acute coronary syndrome
Approximately 10 % of patients who have suffered from myocardial infarction develop new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF). Coronary artery disease implicating atrial branches has been associated with AF. The following variables have been associated with new-onset AF in the setting of acute coronary syndrome: older age, history of hypertension, history of angina, history of stroke, chronic renal failure, body mass index, no statin use, worse nutritional status, worse Killip class, admission heart rate ≥ 85 bpm, complete atrioventricular block, Glasgow prognostic score, Syntax score, C HEST score > 3, PRECISE-DAPT score ≥ 25, left ventricular ejection fraction ≤40 %, increased left atrial diameter, E/E' ratio > 12, epicardial fat tissue thickness, and thrombolysis in myocardial infarction flow < 3. Regarding laboratory variables, elevated D-dimer levels, C-reactive protein levels, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, creatine kinase-MB, high-sensitivity troponin T at baseline, midregional pro-atrial natriuretic peptide, and cholesterol levels have been proposed as potential predictors of AF in this setting. Regarding the impact of new-onset AF on clinical outcomes, it has been associated with an increased risk of stroke, higher mortality rates, heart failure, cardiogenic shock, higher odds of ventricular arrhythmias and major adverse cardiac events. New-onset AF is an indicator of worse in-hospital prognosis compared to patients with a previous history of AF. New-onset AF, as well as previous AF, were strong predictors of ischemic stroke, and therefore, patients with new-onset AF should be anticoagulated according to the CHA DS -VASc score. Cardioversion to sinus rhythm, if possible, is advised before the discharge as it may be related to better outcomes. [Abstract copyright: Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Default clearing and ex-ante contagion in financial systems with a two-layer network structure
Systemic risks do not arise only as a result of a crisis event, and it is im portant to understand the ex-ante risk contagion mechanisms. There has been no research on ex-ante contagion valuation and contagion modelling of multilayer networks. This study derives the ex-ante-contagion mechanism of a two-layer network financial system with interbank lending connections and cross-holding connections, constructs a general valuation model of the financial system based on the Eisenberg and Noe clearing framework, and then obtains a model of ex-ante risk contagion and valuation functions. It is further verified by stress tests that bankruptcy is not a necessary condi tion for loss generation. By simulating different shock scenarios, we obtain the systemic risk and systemically important banks in China. Our models and analyses provide new research perspectives for studying risk contagion mechanisms in financial networks and provide empirical corroboration for regulators and policy makers
A comprehensive review of sustainable geopolymer concrete using palm oil clinker: Environmental and engineering aspects
Amidst the dual challenges of aggregate scarcity and the environmental impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from cement production, this study investigates the viability of palm oil clinker (POC) as a sustainable aggregate in geopolymer concrete (GPC). The lack of appropriate alternative coarse and fine aggregates essential in concrete production is one of the critical issues faced by the construction industry. This review evaluates its environmental benefits, chemical and physical attributes, and influence on GPC's microstructure. Previous studies have shown that incorporating POC in GPC significantly reduces density from 2345 to 1821 kg/m3 while maintaining competitive compressive strength, thus proving its applicability in various structural and nonstructural contexts. Moreover, GPC with POC demonstrates enhanced resistance to aggressive environmental conditions such as water absorption and resistance against acid and sulfate environments. Geopolymer mortar (GPM) exposed to sulfate attack recorded the lowest decrease in strength than GPM containing POC fine aggregates by about 20%. The use of 100% POC aggregates in GPC mix has a 3.2% water absorption, which is lower than the limit for high-performance concrete. The results advocate for the development of POC-aggregate GPC as an environmentally friendly construction material, contributing to the sustainable advancement of the building industry
Established and new: a systematic review of an emerging transdiagnostic treatment and an exploration of change processes in an established treatment
Personality research suggests that there is a spectrum of inhibitory control, ranging from undercontrolled to overcontrolled. Traits at both ends of the specturm have been associated with mental health difficulties. Specifically, overcontrol has been associated with anorexia nervosa, anxiety disorders and “treatment resistant” depression. Radically Open Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (RO DBT) is an emerging transdiagnostic therapy aimed at improving mental health symptoms by reducing overcontrol and improving social connectedness. To date, no systematic critique of the literature has been completed. This systematic review aimed to synthesis the available quantitative findings of RO DBT transdiagnostically and across the lifespan. Five databases were included in the search, with terms covering RO DBT and overcontrol. Ten studies were identified and narrative analysis completed. Quality assessment rated all papers as good or fair. Synthesis found improvements in mental health symptoms, overcontrol traits and social connectedness. These were seen across the lifespan and transdiagnostically. This synthesis suggests there is a transdiagnostic benefit of RO DBT for improving mental health and overcontrol traits. There was considerable variation between studies in their delivery of RO DBT and the measures used to monitor mental health symptoms, overcontrol and social connectedness. Further research with cohesive approaches is warranted to better compare RO DBT transdiagnostically
