Health care disparities: moving the needle

    Get PDF
As an obstetrician, I am acutely aware of the United States maternal mortality rate, which is frighteningly worse than any other developed country. Even more alarming is the fact that the rate for black and native women in the USA is 3-4 times higher, regardless of socioeconomic status and education level. In Iowa, our maternal mortality figures are no better than the rest of the nation overall and may be slightly worse for black and native women. How can this be, when Iowa enjoys a reputation for quality health care

Interactions with the Narrative of Jewish Suffering: Methods of Interaction and Development of Memory at the Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas

    Get PDF
The historical narrative is a living entity easily influenced by interpretation and reinterpretation of ideologies, events, and conflicts. The development of a concrete narrative surrounding events, such as the Holocaust, can mask or expose horrifying crimes against humanity. The public memorial is one of many tools used by societies to help shape the events of the past into the rhetoric of the future. After the close of the Second World War, Germany became a state riddled with memorials attempting to integrate the horrors of the Holocaust with a continuously developing German identity. These monuments and the narratives they embodied explicitly helped to shape the national narrative of the Holocaust in German culture, and this narrative has been redefined over time. Recently, the construction of the Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas (DEJE) or Holocaust Denkmal in Berlin, attempted to integrate an understanding of Jewish Suffering during the Holocaust into the German national narrative of trauma. After fifteen years, the monument has developed a permanent position in the landscape and character of Berlin. It serves as a major tourist attraction and is visited by half a million people a year. This piece will analyze major themes present in the methods through which individuals and organizations interact with the DEJE. The analysis will focus on how the monument is interacted with on behavioral, photographic, and political levels, in an attempt to understand how individuals and German culture have begun to interact with a physical embodiment of a narrative of Jewish suffering, present in the heart of Germany

Lexical-Semantic Access and Organization in Children who are Hard of Hearing: Evidence from Verbal Fluency Tasks

    Get PDF
Language acquisition is complex. Auditory access supports spoken language acquisition. Children with hearing loss have limited auditory access and therefore are at risk for poorer language outcomes compared to typical hearing peers. Because children who are hard of hearing (HH) develop language via degraded auditory input, they have reduced access to the fine-grained phonological information that comprises words. Their limited auditory access can also cause children who are HH to hear words in fewer semantic contexts than children with typical hearing (TH). These differences in phonological sensitivity and semantic knowledge may lead to weaker lexical-semantic representations in children who are HH. The current study uses a verbal fluency task to address the following research questions: (1) do children who are HH and children who are TH differ in their lexical-semantic organization, (2) do children who are HH and children who are TH differ in their use of phonological and semantic clustering strategies, and (3) what is the effect of age on verbal fluency performance for children who are HH and children who are TH? We predict children who are HH to generate fewer words in both phonemic and semantic verbal fluency subtests and use semantic strategies more than children who have TH, exposing an effect of age for only children who have TH. Eighteen children who are TH and 25 children who are HH completed a verbal fluency task. Results partially supported our predictions; similar performance in total words, clusters and cluster size, and clustering strategy while there was a moderate effect on age for children who are TH only. A better understanding of the underlying lexical-semantic organization system in children who are HH will inform more effective treatment approaches, which could carry over to improved literacy and academic success

Featured here is a rendering of Clara Johnson in her costume during Act 1 scene 6 through 9. She is wearing a pale yellow dress with a white floral lace overlay. While designing Clara’s costumes I aimed to keep them colorful and youthful, to show her light-hearted and free spirit. Most of her costumes complement her mother’s to show how her mother has a strong influence on her.https://ir.uiowa.edu/costume_design/1230/thumbnail.jp

Featured here is a rendering of Signor Naccarelli during Act 1 scene 6. He is wearing a brown raw silk jacket, a burgundy silk vest, a gold tie, and a cream pant. Signor works in a shop selling suits and ties, so while designing him I wanted to make sure his costumes were classic, well fitted and slick.https://ir.uiowa.edu/costume_design/1238/thumbnail.jp
