The Recalcitrance and Resilience of Scientific Function

    Get PDF
“Function” is a vitally important concept in the scientific community. Scientists use it to describe and address a wide variety of research problems. In publications, however, scientists within and across disciplines interpret function differently. For example, intense controversy surrounds what percentage of the human genome should be deemed functional” rather than “junk DNA.” In this essay, we analyze the use of function in the research of de novo gene birth, a budding scientific field that studies how novel genes can emerge in non-genic sequences. Our research team, composed of a rhetorical scholar, philosopher, structural biologist and systems biologist, crafts a taxonomy of how “function” is variously constituted in de novo gene birth publications, including as expressions, capacities, interactions, physiological implications and evolutionary implications. We argue function is shaped by the diverse onto-epistemological perspectives of scientists and is both a recalcitrant and resilient concept of scientific practice. Informed by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s writings on a scientific mode of thinking, functions are time-space scales of objects under investigation that make possible references to scientific measurements

What’s Deer to You?: Exploitation of White-tailed Deer from a Late Woodland River Valley Site

    Get PDF
This study analyzes faunal remains recovered from Woodpecker Cave (13JH202), a Late Woodland rockshelter site located in southeast Iowa. Seven seasons of field school excavations at Woodpecker Cave resulted in over 24,000 faunal specimens. These faunal remains were sorted by element and assigned their appropriate genus and species. Care was also given to identify evidence of butchery, including cut marks and breakage morphology. Although over 30 species have been identified from Woodpecker Cave, the quantification analysis indicates that subsistence efforts were focused primarily on the hunting of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). A seasonality analysis of the site supports prior research that Woodpecker Cave was likely occupied during the fall and winter. Comparison of Woodpecker Cave to other regional rockshelter sites reveal a broader pattern of rockshelters being used as hunting camps for intense, specialized hunting of white-tailed deer to supplement Late Woodland subsistence

Successful non-surgical management of acute, uncomplicated appendicitis in pregnancy: A case report

    Get PDF
Acute appendicitis during pregnancy is one of the most common non-obstetric indications for surgery during pregnancy. Prompt surgical intervention for appendicitis is considered the standard of care. However, data on the utility of surgical management of uncomplicated cases of appendicitis is inconclusive and effectiveness of non-surgical management is currently understudied. We present a case that provides evidence for successful, antibiotic management of uncomplicated appendicitis as a means to reduce the burden of surgical complications on the pregnant population. This article also offers a critical analysis of current standard of care and assesses feasibility of nonsurgical management of acute, uncomplicated appendicitis in pregnancy for well-selected patients

Severus of Antioch and the Anti-Chalcedonian Movement

The Importance of Severus of Antioch in shaping the Anti-Chalcedonian Movement is hard to overstate, as his thought was vital in unifying the theology of the once disparate and divided Anti-Chalcedonians . His role extends even beyond the realm of theology and into politics where his activities played a major role in shaping the politics and policies of the last decade of the reign ofthe EmperorAnastasius. Even after his exile following the ascension of Justinian to power, Severus’s influence continued to be felt through the Anti-Chalcedonian movement, most especially in Syria. Where his legacy intellectual, culturalandpolitical was reshaped and redefined. To truly understand Severus’s importance in the Anti-Chalcedonian movement it is necessary to understand how Severus was shaped by the cultural and political world of the Late Roman Empire, especially the monastic culture of Late Roman Syria where Severus spent the better part of his adult life. In this way Severus’s life also serves to illuminate the monastic life in Late Antiquity and especially its connections with the Anti-Chalcedonian movement. In these ways and many other Severus’s life opens a door into the past, and helps illuminate the religious, political and cultural history of Late Antiquity as a whole of the Late Roman Near East in particular

Melusine, Invisible Leadership and the Future (in the Past)

    No full text
This paper considers the operation of “invisible” leadership in the figure of Melusine from the late Middle English romance Melusine. By invoking contemporary leadership theory, this paper identifies leadership maneuvers in Melusine that are similar to those often practiced by women today, but the discourses of gender identity then ultimately render Melusine’s leadership invisible, just as leadership discourses today often render female leadership invisible. By uncovering the operation of “invisible” leadership in the figure of Melusine and identifying commonalities with the leadership of women today, this paper aims to improve our understanding of the contemporary problem of the marked absence of women in leadership positions in our own society. Moreover, by highlighting the tentacular reach of the often obscured forces that work to exclude women from leadership roles I hope to contribute to strategies to interrupt such operations. This paper concludes with a consideration of the challenge that is Melusine’s leadership. This final approach to the text of Melusine yields a twist in the tale, so to speak, that introduces the potential for different kinds of leadership futures
