Structural characterization and barrier properties of hybrid sol-gel films applied on tinplate

    No full text
Several hybrid sol-gel formulations applied on tinplate were studied. The organic precursor was vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) and the inorganic one was tetraethylorthosilane (TEOS). The characterization was performed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The optimization of the curing parameters was made by kinetics analysis based on Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The barrier properties were evaluated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) technique. The results indicated that only sol-gel solutions with high inorganic precursor ratios are able to form a continuous film, necessary to provide good barrier properties. Thus, tinplate coated with 25% VTMS and 75% TEOS formulation exhibited the better protection properties in the studied medium

    No full text

    No full text

Revisiting the omitted price bias in the estimation of production functions

    No full text
The lack of information on quantities presents significant challenges for estimating production functions. As shown by Klette and Griliches in 1996, deflating nominal variables using aggregate price indices leads to biased estimators. In this paper, we show that a similar problem arises when firm-specific prices are recovered from reported firm-specific price changes via a recursive formula. This recursion formula depends on an initial condition given by the unobserved price level in the base year, which then appears in the empirical production function as a firm-specific fixed effect. The standard practice is to ignore these fixed effects by setting the firm-specific prices in the base year to a constant value common to all firms, usually unity (zero in logs). We show that this practice generates biased estimators. We examine this bias via Monte Carlo simulations and with an empirical application. Solving this problem is not straightforward and requires further assumptions because these fixed effects generate nonlinear measurement errors

Classic hypotheses of area, time, and climatic stability fall short in explaining high tropical species richness

Aim Tropical biodiversity overshadows the number of species inhabiting other regions. Age, area, and stability constitute three classical ideas used to explain the higher richness in these warm and humid zones. In this study, we measured the global dynamics of tropical, arid, temperate, cold, and polar climate zones over the last 5 million years (Ma). We aimed to evaluate whether the age, area, and stability of these climate zones contribute to explain the observed differences in species richness. Location Global land. Taxa Amphibians, birds, and mammals. Methods We classified the paleoclimatic layers generated by the PALEO‐PGEM climatic emulator—temperature and precipitation for the last 5 Ma at 1000‐year intervals—into the main Köppen‐Geiger climate zones: tropical, arid, temperate, cold, and polar. We then calculated three variables: age, area, and stability. Age represents the duration that each map cell has remained within its current climate zone since its last change (map cell‐based measure). Area quantifies the total extent of each climate zone over time by summing all map cells corresponding to that climate zone (climate zone‐based measure). Stability indicates the number of times a given map cell changed between climate zones over time (map cell‐based measure). We implemented regression and correlation tests, Structural Equation Models, and decision trees to measure the relationship between these estimates and current global patterns of amphibian, bird, and mammal richness. Results Our results indicate that age, area, and stability do not account for the observed differences in species richness among the 5 climate zones. Main Conclusions None of these classical hypotheses alone can explain the high vertebrate tropical richness observed. Further investigation, incorporating additional taxa (e.g. invertebrates or plants), or integrating new perspectives (such as the influence of local variations in diversification processes) will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the factors shaping large‐scale biodiversity patterns.Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref. Interdisciplinary learning situations based on neuroscience inputs

    No full text
The constant evolution of the educational field requires continuous adaptation to meet changing social demands. In this context, interdisciplinarity and the inclusion of knowledge from neuroscience are elements of great interest to design more effective educational experiences, enhancing learning in a comprehensive manner. The overall objective was to design and implement interdisciplinary learning situations and specific resources based on neuroscience. This involved including its key principles in the curriculum design, developing the training-practical process and evaluating the actions carried out. The methodology proposed for this project was based on a critical-descriptive approach and a participatory action research design. Some of the audiovisual resources obtained were disseminated and some of the programmed experiences were tested in a real context with primary school students
