Modeling species-rich ecosystems to understand community dynamics and structures emerging from individual plant interactions

Grasslands cover 40% of the earth’s land area and provide numerous valuable ecosystem services. However, climate change, global land use change and increasing intensive anthropogenic interventions make grasslands to one of the most endangered ecosystem types in the world. Effective protection in the future requires a fundamental understanding of the dynamics of grasslands and their major drivers. Field experiments have been conducted for impact analyses, for example, with different management intensities, plant community composition and altered climatic conditions. Complementary, ecological models allow to extend the analysis to long-term effects of changes as well as to a deeper understanding of the underlying ecological processes. In this thesis, an individual-based grassland model and network science were applied to understand the community structure and dynamics emerging from individual plant interactions – in relation to plant traits, ecological processes, environmental and anthropogenic impacts, and the small-scale spatial distribution of plants. In the first study, an individual-based process-oriented grassland model was parameterized to simulate field data of a local biodiversity experiment using the concept of plant functional types. The influence of various functional plant traits and ecological processes on grassland productivity and functional composition were analyzed. Different functional plant traits showed partly contrasting effects on plant growth. With regard to the modeled ecological processes, competition for space between plants affected grassland productivity more than shading of plants. In the second study, the parameterized grassland model was used to analyze the impact of functional diversity, mowing frequency and air temperature on ecological processes that lead to changes in grassland productivity. The model reproduced the increase of biomass yields with functional diversity as observed in the field experiment. Modeled plant competition for space showed to be the dominant process and was responsible for an increase in biomass yields in more frequently mown grasslands. In the third study, an approach to generate a regionally transferable parameterization of the grassland model is presented. The impact of management, environment and climate change on productivity and functional composition of grasslands was analyzed within a German-wide scenario analysis. Management intensity had more influence on grassland productivity than environmental factors and correlations of productivity with environmental factors become stronger in less managed grasslands. Climate change showed to have only a minor influence on simulated vegetation attributes. In the fourth study, network science was applied to forest megaplots to quantify the spatial neighborhood structure of species-rich ecosystems. Networks at the individual-tree and tree-species levels revealed similar structures at three investigated forest sites. Tropical tree species coexisted in small-scale networks and only up to 51% of all possible connections between species pairs were realized. A null community analysis showed that details on the tree position and tree size have no major influence on the network structures identified. In summary, this thesis presents the development of advanced methods and analysis tools as well as their application to vegetation ecosystems with high diversity. Thereby, complex structures and dynamics of ecological systems could be systematically explored by combining ecological models with extensive field measurements

From Magnetite to Cobalt Ferrite Thin Films: New Perspectives for the Growth of Thin Ferrite Films for their Application in Spintronics

    No full text
This work addresses the growth of ultrathin magnetite (Fe3O4) and cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) films and their thorough structural, electronic, and magnetic characterization. In a first step, ultrathin Fe3O4 films are grown on SrTiO3(001) substrates by reactive molecular beam epitaxy (RMBE) and the substrate-induced anomalous strain behavior of the films is investigated by complementary high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and (grazing incidence) X-ray diffraction [(GI)XRD] measurements. Next, an additional CoO film is deposited on similar Fe3O4/SrTiO3(001) heterostructures to demonstrate an alternative route for the synthesis of cobalt ferrite films through the thermally mediated interdiffusion of both oxide films. The evolution from the initial bilayer stacks to completely reacted cobalt ferrite films is extensively monitored by soft and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (soft XPS and HAXPES) and (GI)XRD. Complete intermixing and formation of single cobalt ferrite films is confirmed by angular-resolved HAXPES (AR-HAXPES) and X-ray reflectivity (XRR). The study of the cationic distribution resulting from this novel synthesis technique and its effects on the magnetic properties of the cobalt ferrite films is the subject of the subsequent part. Here, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry serve as key investigation techniques, which are further complemented by AR-HAXPES and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. In a final step, highly crystalline cobalt ferrite films with different cationic stoichiometries are grown on MgO substrates using RMBE while their growth behavior is captured in real-time using operando XRD. Further structural characterization of the films is carried out by low-energy electron diffraction and XRR, whereas HAXPES and SQUID provide fundamental information on the electronic, chemical, and magnetic properties of the films

Di-tert-butyltin(IV)–hydroxide–iodide, tBu2Sn(OH)I, the last missing member in the series of pure di-tert-butyltin(IV)–hydroxide–halides

The crystal structure of di-tert-butylhydroxidoiodidotin(IV), [Sn(C4H9)2I(OH)] or tBu2Sn(OH)I, consists of dimeric, centrosymmetric molecules exhibiting the typical structural features of diorganotin(IV)-hydroxide-halides, R2Sn(OH)Hal. Two trigonal–bipyramidally coordinated tin(IV) atoms are bridged via two hydroxyl groups, resulting in a planar, four-membered {Sn—O}2 ring of rhombic shape, with acute angles at tin, obtuse angles at oxygen and two different Sn—O distances depending whether the oxygen atom adopts an axial or equatorial position at the tin(IV) atom. In contrast to its fluorine, chlorine and bromine homologues, no hydrogen bonds between the OH group and the halide atom exist, confining the intermolecular interactions to van der Waals forces

The Role of Task and Environment in Biologically Inspired Artificial Intelligence: Learning as an Active, Sensorimotor Process

    Get PDF
The fields of biologically inspired artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and psychology have had exciting influences on each other over the past decades. Especially recently, with the increased popularity and success of artificial neural networks (ANNs), ANNs have enjoyed frequent use as models for brain function. However, there are still many disparities between the implementation, algorithms, and learning environment used for deep learning and those employed by the brain, which is reflected in their differing abilities. I first briefly introduce ANNs and survey the differences and similarities between them and the brain. I then make a case for designing the learning environment of ANNs to be more similar to that in which brains learn, namely by allowing them to actively interact with the world and decreasing the amount of external supervision. To implement this sensorimotor learning in an artificial agent, I use deep reinforcement learning, which I will also briefly introduce and compare to learning in the brain. In the research presented in this dissertation, I focus on testing the hypothesis that the learning environment matters and that learning in an embodied way leads to acquiring different representations of the world. We first tested this on human subjects, comparing spatial knowledge acquisition in virtual reality to learning from an interactive map. The corresponding two publications are complemented by a methods paper describing eye tracking in virtual reality as a helpful tool in this type of research. After demonstrating that subjects do indeed learn different spatial knowledge in the two conditions, we test whether this transfers to artificial agents. Two further publications show that an ANN learning through interaction learns significantly different representations of the sensory input than ANNs that learn without interaction. We also demonstrate that through end-to-end sensorimotor learning, an ANN can learn visually-guided motor control and navigation behavior in a complex 3D maze environment without any external supervision using curiosity as an intrinsic reward signal. The learned representations are sparse, encode meaningful, action-oriented information about the environment, and can perform few-shot object recognition despite not knowing any labeled data beforehand. Overall, I make a case for increasing the realism of the computational tasks ANNs need to solve (largely self-supervised, sensorimotor learning) to improve some of their shortcomings and make them better models of the brain

Parameter recovery for moment problems on algebraic varieties

    Get PDF
The thesis studies truncated moment problems and related reconstruction techniques. It transfers the main aspects of Prony's method from finitely-supported measures to the classes of signed or non-negative measures supported on algebraic varieties of any dimension. The Zariski closure of the support of these measures is shown to be determined by finitely many moments and can be computed from the kernel of moment matrices. Moreover, several reconstruction algorithms are developed which are based on the computation of generalized eigenvalues and allow to recover the components of mixtures of such measures

The Modification of Boolean Models in Random Network Analysis

    No full text
In this manuscript we perform a rigorous mathematical investigation of the behavior opportunistic network models exhibit when two major real-world problems are taken into account. The first problem considered is obstruction. Here we model the network using an obstructed Gilbert graph which is a classical Gilbert graph but where there exist zones where no nodes are allowed to be placed. We take a look at percolation properties of this model, that is we investigate random graph configurations for which a component of infinite size has strictly positive probability to be created. The second problem considered in this thesis is mobility. Of course mobility in and of itself is not a problem but a feature in any network that follows the store-carry-forward paradigm. However it can be problematic to properly handle in a mathematical model. In the past this has been done by modelling movement by a series of static network configurations. However, with this technique it can be difficult to get a grasp on some of the time sensitive properties of the network. In this work we introduce the time bounded cylinder model which enables an analysis over a complete timeframe. We provide normal approximations for important properties of the model, like its covered volume and the number of isolated nodes. As we are using rigorous mathematics to tackle problems which computer scientists working in the field of distributed systems are faced with, we bring the two fields closer together

    Get PDF
