Vertreibung
Rhythmic Sensory Stimulation and the Role of Phase Synchronization in Fear Conditioning
Understanding the complexity of memory processing in the brain is a major element of research in
biopsychology and neuroscience. Advantages of animal studies comprise various ways to directly
manipulate neural activity in memory-processing brain areas with high temporal and spatial
precision. In contrast, human studies are often correlational in nature via assessing brain
oscillations occurring during different stages of memory processing. Causal experimental
approaches addressing the relevant associations are still sparse. As one promising line of research
for causal inference in humans, external rhythmic stimulation via technical device or frequencymodulated
sensory stimuli is suitable. It can be used to directly modulate brain oscillations and
therefore opens the possibility of assessing the causal role of brain rhythms.
In the present thesis this rhythmic sensory stimulation is used in fear conditioning which is a valid
model for aversive learning and memory. It aims at 1) investigating visuocortical tunings towards
a threat-predictive stimulus and, importantly, addressing its persistence over different phases of
fear conditioning and 2) for the first time testing the causal role of phase-synchronization in
different low frequency bands for the association of an initially neutral visual stimulus with an
auditory threat cue in both a laboratory and in a web-based fear conditioning paradigm.
In line with these aims, the three empirical studies were designed to use either unimodal or
multimodal rhythmic stimulation to modulate oscillatory activity in a generalization fear
conditioning paradigm, covering the learning phases habituation, fear acquisition, and extinction
on day 1 (Studies 1 to 3), and delayed recall on day 2 (Studies 1, 2). In Study 1, we examined the
visuocortical engagement in fear conditioning with a special focus on its persistence across an
extinction and delayed recall phase. To account for the very early sensory processing, we assessed
steady-state visual responses (as an indicator of visuocortical engagement) that were evoked via
rhythmic visual stimulation in an alpha rhythm. We found visuocortical tuning to the threatpredictive
stimulus as a result of fear acquisition, while extinction learning prompted rapid changes
in orientation tuning: Here, conditioned visuocortical engagement and skin conductance responses
to the fear-associated stimulus were strongly reduced. Importantly, delayed recall revealed a brief
but precise return-of-tuning to the threat-stimulus in the visual cortex accompanied by a brief, more
generalized return-of-fear in skin conductance. In sum, early visual processing shows response
patterns that are consistent with memory consolidation and spontaneous recovery. In Study 2, we
extended our rhythmic stimulation paradigm from being unimodal to multimodal. This served to manipulate phase-synchronization between an initially neutral visual stimulus and an auditory
threat cue in a memory-relevant theta frequency, and thus to address the associative nature of fear
conditioning. We compared the effects of a synchronous (in-phase) condition with an asynchronous
(out-of-phase) condition on fear acquisition, extinction learning, and delayed recall. Phase
synchronization improved contingency knowledge and facilitated discrimination in terms of rated
valence and arousal. However, synchronization did not modify conditioned responding in skin
conductance responses and steady-state visually evoked potentials during acquisition, although
both measures demonstrated the greatest response to the threat-predictive stimulus. Together, these
data support a causal role of theta-phase synchronization in affective evaluation and contingency
knowledge during fear acquisition. In Study 3 we extended the modulation of phasesynchronization
from a theta to a slower delta rhythm and moreover, transferred our procedure into
a web-based fear conditioning paradigm (due to the COVID-19 pandemic). In accordance with
Study 2, phase-synchronization augmented the discrimination of generalization stimuli in
contingency knowledge. However, it did not affect valence and arousal ratings. Interestingly, the
effect of synchronization occurred independent of frequency, i.e., occurred after both theta and
delta rhythm. Moreover, and as a prerequisite of Study 3, we proved the ability to successfully
conduct complex generalization fear conditioning in an online setting. Together, our data of phase
synchronization studies supports a causal role of phase synchronization in the declarative
knowledge of contingency for low frequencies rather than in the specific theta frequency.
In sum, the current thesis provides the promising approach of using rhythmic sensory stimulation
to modulate very early sensory processing as well as to directly manipulate the precise timing of
to-be-associated stimuli in an aversive fear conditioning paradigm. Both methods emphasize the
importance of oscillatory brain activity by offering non-invasive ways of direct modulations in
order to modify selected stages of the fear learning and memory (e.g., fear acquisition, extinction,
and delayed recall)
Developing a pathway to improve large-scale gridded population modelling based on the World Settlement Footprint suite
The field of large-scale human population modelling has emerged as a response to the increasing demands for actionable, consistent and comparable population data needed to support a large number of sustainable development applications. Nowadays, Earth Observation-derived, top-down large-scale gridded population datasets that describe the extent and spatial distribution of the human population as continuous surfaces (rasters), are openly accepted by many governments and institutions around the world, who use them as an alternative source of information to complement/supplement conventional census/estimate-based population data.
Given the wide range of applications where gridded population products are being employed, research performed to improve the accuracy and spatial resolution of large-scale population models has become of utmost importance. For the last decade, the scientific community has constantly leveraged the increasing availability of Earth Observation data, the improvements made on Remote Sensing techniques and the developments made on the field of Machine Learning, to produce large-scale gridded population datasets with higher usability and reliability. For example, some of the most accurate and spatially explicit products available at a global scale are produced mainly by harnessing the inclusion of remotely-sensed derived proxy layers with improved thematic and spatial resolution, especially those describing the characteristics of the built-up environment such as built-area layers and building footprint datasets, respectively.
However, notwithstanding these advancements, a systematic literature review undertaken within this PhD research has revealed that existing top-down large-scale population models still suffer from a number of limitations that affect the final accuracy and usability of their corresponding derived population datasets. In particular, it has been identified that existing models used to produce large-scale gridded population maps are still affected by a) the quality and recency (currentness or age of the data) of the underlying census/estimate-based population data on the one hand; and by b) the still low spatial resolution of the geospatial proxies used for disaggregation, c) the persistent inaccuracy in identifying populated areas from remotely-sensed data, and d) the lack of information on the functional use and 3D characteristics of the built-up environment, on the other hand. Overall, it has been concluded that if some of these limitations still exist in the field, it is because data and methods that can help overcome these issues at very local–scales (e.g. national models) are yet not available or transferable to large-scale applications (e.g. continental or global models).
In this context, this PhD thesis explores the capabilities and effectiveness of the new World Settlement Footprint (WSF) suite in the production of a large-scale gridded population model that allows improving the accuracy and spatial resolution of end-user population datasets. In detail, it presents a methodological framework that explores how and if each of the WSF-layers, namely the WSF2015, the WSF2019 and the WSF3D can overcome the limitations listed above, in particular limitations b), c) and d). Thereinafter, each WSF-layer was evaluated in terms of 1) their ability to improve population estimates compared to binary-dasymetric models, 2) their ability to produce consistent and comparable accuracies across large territorial extents, 3) their ability to produce accurate population estimates acting as single proxies for population modelling, 4) their ability to reduce the technical complexities of multi-layer weighed-dasymetric models, 5) their ability to discriminate large industrial areas using a simple and spatially transferable machine learning approach, and finally 6) their ability to improve population estimates through the integration of volume and settlement use information.
Within this methodological framework, a comprehensive set of spatial and statistical analyses were designed to evaluate the uncertainties of large a number of population distribution maps at local, national and continental scale. For a robust assessment, population models were produced at varying currencies, qualities and spatial scales of the input census-based population data, with the purpose of analysing how the differences in the level of spatial granularity of the available administrative boundaries and the variability in the morphology of built-up landscapes influence the accuracy of each WSF layer.
Overall, the main findings of this PhD thesis demonstrate that the WSF-layers are capable of tackling some of the main limitations identified in the field of large-scale population modelling. First, the independent weighting framework provided by the non-binary WSF-layers allowed outperforming the mapping accuracies of widely employed binary-dasymetric models and reduce the technical complexities of (multi-layer) weighted dasymetric models. Second, as single proxy layers used for dasymetric disaggregation, each WSF-layer was also capable of delivering consistent and systematic accuracies across large territorial extents (e.g. continent and region-wide); where the robustness of each layer was consistent under varying qualities and spatial resolutions of the input population data. Finally, spatial metrics derived solely from the WSF3D dataset showed to be extremely effective at classifying the built-up environment into industrial and non-industrial land-uses, which ultimately, allowed incorporating for the first time ever, settlement use and settlement volume information into large-scale models of population disaggregation.
In view of these promising results, the main contributions of this PhD research can be summarised as follows:
1. Quantitative and qualitative demonstration of how employing the WSF-suite for population modelling overcomes some of the most prominent limitations in the field.
2. First in-depth quality assessment aimed at evaluating the effectiveness and suitability of each WSF-dataset as proxy layer for large-scale population modelling.
3. Design and implementation of the Settlement Size Complexity (SSC) index as a robust metric to evaluate the uncertainty of population models based on built-up area layers.
4. Improving understanding on the “fitness for use” of large-scale gridded population datasets.
5. The development of a highly accurate, semi-automatic and globally transferable method for the identification of industrial and non-industrial areas using only the WSF3D dataset in combination with a Machine Learning approach. 6. First time delivery of large-scale population datasets produced on the basis of the WSF-layers, to serve as actionable data for a large number of ongoing-projects
Asylsuchende
Political participation of business organizations in the construction of the technical vocational education and training system in Costa Rica between 1980 and 2021
This research examines the political participation of business associations in shaping the objectives, functions, and characteristics of the Costa Rican TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) system from 1980 to 2021. Utilizing a configurational methodology that integrates structural, subjective dimensions, and social actions, it identifies and elucidates how these business groups have influenced the organization and structure of the Costa Rican TVET system. Qualitative methods were employed to construct a historical perspective of the changes in the TVET system within the context of significant economic, cultural, social, and political processes. This was achieved through 14 semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and an analysis of historical documents. One of the primary findings is that the political activities of business groups related to TVET are a response to economic efforts aimed at developing a model based on attracting foreign direct investment and making Costa Rica an appealing destination for transnational companies in terms of skilled labor. Consequently, since 1980, processes of structural economic modernization have been implemented, including trade liberalization and openness, educational and legal reforms centered on modifying the curriculum to be competency-based, the introduction of dual apprenticeship programs, and the emergence of private vocational training institutions. In conclusion, the discourse surrounding the modernization of vocational training within the framework of global capitalist production processes, guided by Industry 4.0 and the transformations in the world of work that these labor relations imply, is evident. As a general observation, it can be stated that the business organizations under study, driven by a neoliberal ideology and practice, have endeavored to design a TVET system that caters to the immediate needs of transnational companies. This implies that the discussions about educational supply and business demand have been largely narrowed down to the specific requirements of these transnational corporations
Use of textile and semipermeable glove liners and comfort gloves in the prevention of occupational skin diseases
Predicting Personality and Mapping its Impacts in Rapidly Evolving Business Environments: A Behavioral Process Perspective
This dissertation provides empirical insights into predicting personality and mapping its
impacts in rapidly evolving business environments. Following the notion of the lens model, the common core marks a set of (personality-evoked) behavioral processes, which are subject to change in dynamic business environments characterized by digitalization. Regarding this dissertation’s first focal area – Predicting Personality Based on Traditional and Novel Applicant Information (Chapter 2) – I examine (i) resumés’ (Article 2.1) and (ii) LinkedIn profiles’ (Article 2.2) predictive potential to accurately infer personality (i.e., the big five, narcissism, intelligence). I found both information bases to offer valid cues signaling personality that can be used by mechanical perceivers (machine learning algorithms) to achieve accuracy. Regarding the second focal area – Mapping Personality Traits’ Leadership Impacts in Face-to-Face and Virtual Groups (Chapter 3) – I illuminate the behavioral-perceptual group processes that explain (i) the narcissism-leadership emergence link (Article 3.1) and (ii) links between big five personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, emotional stability) and leadership emergence versus effectiveness (Article 3.2). Multiple mediator models revealed distinct behavioral-perceptual pathways linking personality to leadership outcomes, enhancing the process understanding of why individuals emerge as leaders and what makes them effective. Finally, regarding the third focal area – Zooming-in on Effective Vocational Behaviors in Rapidly Changing Business Environments (Chapter 4) – I shed light on the effectiveness of (i) individual strategies reported by teleworkers to organize their work processes (Article 4.1) and (ii) perceived remote leadership behaviors (Article 4.2), including moderating boundary conditions. The findings provide insights for organizational human resource practices, foreshadowing merits of (a) automated personality inferences as a non-invasive pre-screening tool, (b) personality-evoked behaviors and impressions related to interpersonal warmth and calmness in leader selection and development, and (c) adopting a conducive work attitude and instrumental leadership behaviors in remote work scenarios. Overall, this dissertation underlines the benefits of adopting a flexible (personality-evoked) behavior-centered perspective to address critical questions on the interplay of predicting personality and mapping its impacts in dynamic business environments, contributing to the advancement of research and practical applications in this domain
