    Get PDF

Sparse super resolution in microscopy: Condition, diffraction limit and trigonometric approximations

    No full text
This thesis concerns the development of two ideas to explain the diffraction limit rigidly and it reveals that a deterministic study of the condition shows the same transition behaviour around the classical Rayleigh diffraction limit as a statistical approach using the Cramer-Rao lower bound. Surprisingly, the analysis of both approaches bases on the construction of a certain minorant function with optimal support conditions. After explaining implications towards the analysis of singular values of Vandermonde matrices with clustering nodes, it deals with approaches to solve the super resolution problem through approximation by polynomials and rational functions. For this, estimates for the rate of weak convergence in the 1-Wasserstein distance and for pointwise convergence are shown. In the last part, it is demonstrated how the deterministic and the statistical point of view allow to explain the increased resolution of microscopy techniques like stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM) and structured illumination microscopy (SIM)

Deep Learning and Scientific Models: Complementing Dynamical Systems Using Artificial Neural Networks

    No full text
Deep learning (DL) algorithms are revolutionizing how information is being processed, with multiple applications in the industry and the everyday lives of individuals. This revolution reached scientific research, where such algorithms have started to be applied to handle large amounts of data and to generate more accurate predictions than previous models. At the same time, the black box property of these tools has raised concerns about to which extent they should be used in science. Recently, a new research field called Scientific Machine Learning has emerged, focused on this integration of deep learning in scientific domains. This dissertation explores how scientific models can be improved using deep learning algorithms. Precisely, it comprehends how deep neural networks can improve and complement well-established scientific applications. We approach this problem from an applied research perspective, presenting different studies that employ DL algorithms to improve the capabilities of meteorological and epidemiological models. Our approach contains three studies that developed DL algorithms to handle different types of shortcomings from the original models. Our first study shows that DL algorithms are a powerful tool to improve the output precipitation predictions from meteorological models (which in meteorology is called post-processing) and to generate probabilistic forecasts, and provide relevant insights about its application. The second study uses DL algorithms to increase the spatial resolution and accuracy of the original precipitation maps and analyzes the performance of different models. The resulting algorithms generate realistic precipitation maps that double the resolution of the original forecast. A third study takes a different approach and uses deep neural networks to integrate an additive term into the SIR models’ equations that describe the dynamics of a COVID- 19 outbreak. This additive term learns the incoming force of infection from neighboring regions and improves the ability of the model to capture the right underlying dynamics. One final contribution analyses and recollects the requirements of a workflow concept that enhances the accessibility and reproducibility of DL algorithms in scientific contexts. We found that DL algorithms are powerful tools to complement dynamical systems in different forms, helping to increase their predictive capabilities. The large amount of available data combined with the neural networks’ universal function approximator property makes it a powerful tool to improve existing models. However, when applying DL algorithms to scientific tasks, some considerations need to be observed to enhance and ensure the scientific validity of its predictions

    Get PDF
„Body of Knowledge“ bei.

    Get PDF

The Geopolitics of Oceania - The Pacific Islands

    No full text
The paper analyses the geopolitics of Oceania with the Pacific Island States and the geopolitical role of small states in general. Oceania with its three regions Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia is an area of growing geopolitical competition between the Western States Australia, New Zealand, France, United Kingdom, United States and Japan on one side and China on the other side. The key institution is the Pacific Iceland Forum PIF with Australia, New Zealand, the French territories French Polynesia and New Caledonia, the 14 oceanic states Fiji, Kiribati, Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, Niue, Solomon Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Samoa, Vanuatu, Nauru, Tonga, Palau, and Tuvalu. American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Marianas have observer status. The main pillars of Western influence in Oceania are: 1. Defense and security, 2. Binding of local currencies to Western currencies, 3. Developmental aid and 4. Association to Western States or a status as dependent territories. Many islands use or are linked to the US Dollar, the Australian Dollar, or the New Zealand Dollar. Most islands do not achieve a 100 million US Dollar national budget, despite development assistance that is primarily provided by Australia, United States, China, France, and Japan. The Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and Palau are in free association with the United States while Niue and the Cook Islands are associated to New Zealand. The Pacific islands states face several challenges regarding natural disasters, poverty, and difficult governance. Large parts of Oceania are threatened by rising sea levels (inundation) that contribute to coastal erosion and salinization of freshwater reserves. The global warming with rising carbon dioxide levels contributes to an acidification of ocean water which leads to coral bleaching and subsequently to reduced fish reserves. Recent geologic studies showed however that many Pacific Islands grow with rising sea levels due to sedimentation. The situation in Oceania shows some similarities to the small island states in the Caribbean Sea. According to the informal UN Forum of Small States (FOSS) with more than hundred member states, small states are those with populations of less than 10 million people. In international organizations, small states are confronted with asymmetric access to information, capacity constraints, and structural barriers to full participation. On the other hand, due to the widespread one country-one vote principle, they have a higher per capita weight in voting procedures. A special issue is the selling of rights, e.g., licenses for fishing, mining, communication, or transportation. The smaller the state, the more relevant is the income from these activities for the state household. While such activities are lawful and legitimate, there are also practices like vote buying and selling of passports and titles. Large states try to get the vote of smaller states in exchange for money which has influence on UN voting and diplomatic recognition (dollar diplomacy). A related phenomenon is favoritism, i.e., friendly states get more developmental aid or credits. The geopolitical competition between the West and China is intensified. Chinas approach is to expand influence and to dilute US military power via stretching frontlines. The competition includes a large variety of activities (tourism, media, fishing, investments, foreign aid, deep sea cables) and in reaction to China’s advances, the Western states intensify their diplomatic, economic, and military engagement in the region

Early Sharing: A Study of Early Intersubjectivity from a Situated Framework

    Get PDF
Early sharing between caregivers and infants constitutes the beginning of human social life, and its research provides valuable insights into the psychological and socio-affective sphere. In this research, I explore early sharing from the situated framework of cognitive sciences. This framework claims that cognition is a phenomenon that goes beyond the limits of the brain and includes the participation of others and socio-material resources. In that sense, this research underlines the role of corporeality, emotions, or cultural practices as valuable resources for understanding the genesis of early social cognition. Mainly, this research offers reasons to consider that sharing emerges before infants develop cognitive sophistication and can share mental states; it reveals the importance of cultural differences and local practices in analyzing early sharing; and it shows the connection between interactional dynamics and affective styles. This Ph.D. research covers six topics of the study of early sharing: a) the role of social practices in which caregivers and infants participate; b) the role of corporeal and affective aspects of interactions between them; c) the importance of the level of engagement for creating the interactional and affective style; d) the implications of interpersonal scaffolding to enculturation; e) the importance of mind-shaping process for the regulation of infants' affectivity; and f) the contributions of sustained practices over time for creating affective repertoires. This study integrates perspectives from various disciplines (e.g., psychology, philosophy, anthropology, and neuroscience) that enrich the understanding of early intersubjectivity and create an interdisciplinary approach

Efficacy of a smartphone-based Cognitive Bias Modification program for emotion regulation: A randomized-controlled crossover trial

    Get PDF
Previous research has identified maladaptive emotion regulation as a key factor in psychopathology. Thus, addressing emotion regulation via scalable, low-threshold digital interventions – such as smartphone-based Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) – holds important therapeutic potential. Using a randomized-controlled crossover trial, we tested the efficacy of an integrated CBM module within the Affect Regulation Training (ART, i.e., CBM-ART) that targeted emotion regulation through elements of appraisal-based and approach avoidance training. Undergraduate students reporting elevated stress were randomized to a one-week active intervention (Mindgames; including psychoeducation, a quiz, and CBM-ART; n = 40), active control training (Emo Shape; including placebo psychoeducation, a quiz, and a placebo swiping task; n = 36) or waitlist (n = 25). Before and after the intervention, we assessed emotion regulation, interpretation bias, stress and depression. We further tested post-training stress reactivity using an anagram task. Results indicated that the active intervention improved negative (OR = 0.35) and positive (OR = 2.40) interpretation biases and symptom measures (d = 0.52–0.87). However, active control training showed attenuated concurrent pre-post changes on interpretation biases (i.e., OR = 0.53 for negative, and OR = 1.49 for positive interpretations) and symptom measures (d = 0.26–0.91). The active intervention was rated positively in terms of acceptability and usability. These findings provide initial evidence for the efficacy and acceptability of an integrated app-based CBM intervention for emotion regulation in reducing interpretation biases and psychopathological symptoms, including stress. However, future studies should disentangle specific mechanisms underlying interventional effects

Molecular and spin interactions in carbon nanotube based electronic devices

    No full text
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are an established field of research in physics. Many books and review articles have been published about CNTs since Iijima-sensei discovered the seamless graphitic cylinders and the physical properties of the pristine material are well-understood. Therefore, the research presented in this thesis is directed away from the nanotubes as material per se toward molecular interactions in more complex CNT-based structures. The main interest is still on fundamental physical properties, though, and therefore mainly about structures built upon individual single-walled CNTs. The focus is on spin interactions in molecular CNT structures employing low-temperature transport due to the small energy scales involved
