Risk assessment of trace metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in seawater of typical bays in the Bohai Sea

    No full text
The ecological risks of trace metals (Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, and Hg) and PAHs in seawater from three typical bays of the Bohai Sea (the Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, and Laizhou Bay) were comprehensively assessed by recompiling 637 sites. Results highlighted that scrutiny should be given to the ecological risks of Cu (3.80 mu g/L) in the Bohai Bay and Hg (0.23 mu g/L) in the Laizhou Bay. Conversely, the Liaodong Bay exhibited negligible ecological risks related to trace metals. The risks of sigma PAHs in the Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, and Laizhou Bay were moderate, with mean concentrations of 368.16 ng/L, 731.93 ng/L, and 187.58 ng/L, respectively. The source allocation of trace metals and PAHs required consideration of spatial variability and anthropogenic factors, which greatly affected the distribution and composition of these pollutants. The combined ecological risks in the Bohai Bay (6.80 %) and Laizhou Bay (5.43 %) deserved more attention

The coastal ocean systems play paramount role in the nutrient biogeochemistry because of its interconnected environment. To gain a novel insight into coupling relationships between bacterial community, functioning properties and nutrient metabolism, we conducted analysis on the patterns and driving factors of planktonic bacterial functional community across subsurface water of marine ranching near the Yellow Sea in both summer and winter. Illumina HiSeq Sequencing and a corresponding set of biogeochemical data were used to assess distribution patterns of taxa, adaptive mechanism and metabolic function. Results demonstrated that Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteriota and Bacteroidota were dominant phyla both in summer and winter. Taxonomic profiles related to nutrient variation were found to be highly correlated with Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Chlorophyll fluorescence (FLUO), and distinct diversity differences were also found between summer and winter samples. Functional activity in summer associated with the relative abundance of phototrophy and photoautotrophy were the highest in the subsurface water, while in winter the dominant functional properties were mainly include chemoheterotrophy and aerobic_ chemoheterotrophy. A significant difference related to functional activity between summer and winter, mainly representing ligninolysis and iron_respiration. In general, our study provides a framework for understanding the relative importance of environmental factors, temperature variation and nutrient availability in shaping the metabolic processes of aquatic microorganisms, particularly in ocean mariculture systems

CsIL-20, a tongue sole interleukin-20, negatively mediates leucocyte activity and antibacterial defense

Interleukin-20 (IL-20), as an essential member of IL-10 family, plays vital roles in mammalian immunological response such as antimicrobial, inflammation, hematopoiesis, and immune diseases. In teleost, the study about immune antimicrobial function of IL-20 is largely scarce. In this article, we revealed the expression profiles and the immunological functions of the IL-20 (CsIL-20) in tongue sole Cynoglossus semilaevis. CsIL-20 is composed of 183 amino acid residues, with seven cysteine residues and a typical IL-10 domain which comprises six alpha-helices and two 13-sheets, and shares 34.4-71.2 % identities with other teleost IL-20. CsIL-20 was constitutively expressed in a variety of tissues and regulated by bacterial invasion, and the recombinant CsIL-20 (rCsIL-20) could bind to different bacteria. In vitro rCsIL-20 could interact with the membrane of peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs), leading to the attenuation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and acid phosphatase activity in PBLs. In line with In vitro results, In vivo rCsIL-20 could obviously suppressed the host immune against bacterial infection. Furthermore, knockdown of CsIL-20 in vivo could markedly enhance the host antibacterial immunity. Collectively, these observations offer new insights into the negative effect of CsIL-20 on antibacterial immunity

From dynamics to sustainability: Modeling the shrimp<i> (Penaeus</i><i> chinensis)</i> fishery in Shandong, China

Since 1984, the stocking of shrimp juveniles has been implemented in the Bohai Sea, China as a strategy to manage the depleted marine fishery. Subsequently, major harvest restriction policies including "Dual Control" (1987), "Summer Fishing Moratorium" (1995), and "Fishermen Transfer and Fishing Fleet Scraping" (2003) were gradually implemented to reduce fishing intensity. However, the relative effectiveness of these three policy changes and management improvements, such as varying stocking quantity, adjusting the duration of the summer fishing ban, and reducing fishing intensity rate have rarely been assessed before their implementation. To address this gap, we developed a System Dynamic model that incorporated multiple scenarios related to these strategies in the shrimp fishery. Using Penaeus chinensis shrimp in the coastal province of Shandong, China, as a test case, we simulated the harvest metrics and stock size for each scenario. Our model predictions revealed that among the three strategies, extending the duration of the summer fishing ban is the most likely to improve the harvest metrics, while reducing fishing intensity significantly increases shrimp abundance. Based on the research findings, we recommend an optimal combination of the three strategies: releasing approximately 700 million individual juveniles per year, decreasing the fishing intensity rate to 0.65, and increasing the duration of the summer fishing ban to 123 days, from 1 May to 31 August. The research outcomes contribute to evidence-based decision-making and sustainable management practices in the Bohai Sea shrimp fishery and beyond

    No full text
This study aimed to investigate the distribution, pollution, risk and sources of trace metals in sediments along China Sea. Clear spatial variations were found for Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, and Pb, whereas As did not show spatial variation. East China Sea (ECS) contained the highest concentrations of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, South China Sea (SCS) shallow sea contained the highest concentrations of Zn, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, and Pb, whereas coral reefs contained the lowest concentrations of trace metals. Spatial variations could be explained by economic development characteristics along China Sea. As, Se and Cd exhibited low to moderate pollution in China Sea sediment, yet pollution for Cu, Zn, Ni, and Ag appeared in some regions. Sediment in ECS had moderate ecological risks and other regions at low ecological risks. The absolute principle component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) and Pb stable isotope indicated that 43-74% of trace metals (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, and Pb) were derived from anthropogenic sources like traffic emission, agricultural activities, industrial source. No pollution and ecological risk were observed in coral reefs, yet 39-71% (Pb) was derived from anthropogenic activities such as motor vessels

We employed a validated method to assess the seasonal variation and distribution of caffeine in the Bohai and Yellow Seas, as well as in Yantai urban estuaries and offshore region in northern China. Caffeine concentrations were highest during the summer in the Yellow Sea (1436.4 ng/L) and lowest in the Yantai urban offshore region during the spring and autumn and in the Yantai urban estuarine area and Bohai Sea during the winter (0.1 ng/L). There was significant variation in maximum caffeine levels among seasons across all regions examined, reaching a difference of 5980.5 times at the same sampling site between summer and winter. The caffeine concentration in the Yantai offshore region was significantly higher than in the Bohai and Yellow Seas. This study is the first investigation of seasonal fluctuations in the pollution levels of neurotoxic substances in the northern seas of China

Significant Differences in Coral Trophic Status Between Nearshore and Offshore Reefs Recorded by δ15N of Coral Symbiotic Zooxanthellae and Host Tissue in the South China Sea in the SCS

    No full text
Significant differences in environmental conditions between nearshore and offshore coral reefs lead to different symbiotic zooxanthellae density (ZD) of corals. From the perspective of energy supply, different ZD lead to different energy provided by the photosynthesis of zooxanthellae to the coral host. However, few studies have conducted a comparative analysis of coral trophic status (i.e., autotrophic photosynthesis of zooxanthellae and heterotrophic feeding of the host) between nearshore and offshore reefs. In this study, 70 coral samples of Favia palauensis were collected from the nearshore Sanya reefs, and offshore Xisha, Nansha reefs in the South China Sea (SCS). The ZD, delta N-15 of seawater particulate organic matter (delta N-15(POM)), host tissue (delta N-15(h)), zooxanthellae (delta N-15(z)) and the difference between delta N-15(h) and delta N-15(z) (i.e., triangle Nh-z 15 = delta N-15(h)-delta N-15(z)) were measured and statistically analyzed. The purpose is to elucidate the differences in the energy maintenance mechanisms of corals between nearshore and offshore reefs. Results show that ZD is significantly positively correlated with delta N-15(z) in all three reefs (p < 0.05). Corals in nearshore Sanya have higher autotrophic abilities than corals from offshore Xisha and Nansha reefs. By contrast, corals in offshore reefs are more dependent on heterotrophic feeding of the host to obtain energy. Our research demonstrate that corals can adjust their trophic status, especially improve their heterotrophic feeding intensity to meet energy needs under different environmental conditions. This dynamic adjustment of energy supply patterns is of great significance to improve coral's environmental adaptability.Plain Language Summary Coral reefs are mainly divided into nearshore fringing reefs, barrier reefs and offshore atolls according to geographical distribution. Therein, ambient seawater in nearshore reefs are significantly affected by human activities and has relatively higher nutrient levels. In contrast, corals in offshore atolls are less affected by human activities as they are far away from the mainland, but they will be potentially affected by abnormal natural conditions. Different environmental conditions lead to significant differences in the physiological parameters of corals, such as symbiotic zooxanthellae density (ZD). From the perspective of energy supply, different ZD may lead to different energy provided by the photosynthesis of zooxanthellae to the coral host. However, few studies have conducted a comparative analysis of coral trophic status between nearshore and offshore reefs. Based on the delta N-15 labeling technology, we find that corals in nearshore fringing reefs have higher autotrophic abilities than corals from offshore reefs. By contrast, corals in the offshore reefs are more dependent on heterotrophic feeding of the host to obtain energy. This means that corals can adjust their trophic status to meet energy needs under different environmental conditions. This dynamic adjustment of energy supply patterns is of great significance to improve coral's environmental adaptability

Long-Term Fertilization Contributes to Carbon Saturation in Neutral-To-Alkaline Soils but not in Acidic Soils

    No full text
The study investigated the adsorption of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on Chinese soils from four long-term experiments involving five treatments: (1) no fertilization (control), (2-4) inorganic nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) fertilization (N, NP, and NPK), (5) NPK plus manure (NPKM). The results showed that DOC adsorption followed a modified Langmuir isotherm model effectively (R-2 = 0.912 similar to 0.991). The maximum adsorption capacity (Q(max)) (i.e. saturation deficits) generally increased with increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) due to fertilization in Luvic Phaeozem, Haplic Gypsisols, and Eutric Cambisols. However, it decreased significantly in acidic soils (Haplic Acrisols) from 15.59 g/kg for control, to 13.96, 13.03, 9.30 and 8.02 g/kg for N, NP, NPK and NPKM, respectively. Moreover, long-term fertilization, particularly with organic fertilization (e.g. NPKM), resulted in an increase of carbon (C) saturation by 1.42 g/kg (5.52%) in Luvic Phaeozem, 9.27 g/kg (44.29%) in Haplic Gypsisols, and 3.75 g/kg (27.66%) in Eutric Cambisols; however, there was a slight decrease by 1.70 g/kg (-7.49%) in Haplic Acrisols. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) revealed that clay content and soil available iron (AFe) might be the crucial factors controlling C deficits, and subsequently, C saturation, along with current SOC. In conclusion, long-term fertilization contributed to C saturation in neutral-to-alkaline soils, but not in acidic soils. Thus, further attention should be paid to the long-term effects of fertilization on C saturation

    No full text
Phycocyanin (PC) is of great significance to biomedicine and water environmental safety. Hence, it is indispensable to develop facile and rapid method for PC determination. In this investigation, a system containing lateral flow chromatography (LFC) strip (which was deposited with molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) capped CdTe quantum dots (QDs) based mesoporous structured coated silica nanoparticles, SiO2@QDs@ms-MIP NPs) and miniaturized fluorimeter was first fabricated. In detail, a two-step strategy was utilized for preparation of SiO2@QDs@ms-MIP NPs, which consisted of modification of CdTe QDs onto the silica NPs first, and synthesis of mesoporous imprinting shell by using PC as template molecule and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant. After that, novel fluorescence NPs possessing specific recognition and sensitivity toward PC in seawater and lake water were acquired. The resulting fluorescent sensing system exhibited outstanding performances, which included excellent sensitivity (4.5 nmol/L), satisfactory specificity (imprinting factor, 2.31), appropriate linearity range (0.01-5 mu mol/L), good recovery (96.0-101.7 %), excellent stability (relative standard deviation, RSD<1.1 %), wonderful reproducibility (RSD<1.1 %), and excellent anti-interference ability. The results of the fluorescent sensing system were superior to those of the commonly used ultraviolet (UV) method. The proposed strategy showed great potential for fast (<10 min) and convenient fluorescence detection of PC in real samples
