Combining remote and collaborative research: A critical reflection on large-scale, comparative, and interdisciplinary research in times of a global crisis
This paper examines the methodological and ethical challenges of conducting remote research on child-animal relationships across thirty communities in 17 countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. It critically assesses remote research as a mode of collaboration informed by decolonial aspirations, highlighting the complexities of navigating temporal and geographical distances, mitigating global inequalities, and addressing political and methodological tensions at the intersection of psychological anthropology and cross-cultural developmental psychology. By engaging with these challenges, the paper fosters critical dialogue on research ethics and methodologies between anthropology and psychology, advancing a broader intellectual engagement toward translocal equity.

Distinct structural deficits in treatment-resistant schizophrenia and their putative neurotransmitter basis: a source-based morphometry analysis
Schizophrenia is associated with widespread gray matter reduction. This is influenced by the underlying connectivity, resulting in covarying patterns of structural changes that are more pronounced in treatment-resistant individuals. However, it remains uncertain whether a distinct network of brain regions, with specific neurotransmitter basis, forms the substrate for treatment resistance in schizophrenia. We investigated the structural covariance networks (SCN) in 198 individuals; 55 with treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) and 79 without TRS (non-TRS) in active symptomatic phase, and 64 healthy controls (HC) using Calhoun's Source-Based Morphometry. We mapped the putative neurotransmitter basis of the SCNs using a PET-based chemoarchitectural atlas. Twelve independent components (i.e., SCNs) were identified. A prefrontal-limbic SCN had lower gray matter volume (GMV) in TRS compared to HC and non-TRS (F = 7.757, p < 0.001, FDR-corrected). Spatial correlation with chemoarchitectural atlas revealed predominant contributions from serotonergic [5HT(1b) and 5HT(2a)], glutamatergic [mGluR(5)], histaminergic [H-3], and opioid [MOR] receptors for this TRS-related SCN (all p(spin-permutation) < 0.05, FDR-corrected). A different SCN comprised of dorsal fronto-temporal and parieto-occipital regions, not associated with any specific neurotransmitter distribution, exhibited reduced GMV in both TRS and non-TRS groups vs. HC (F = 7.239, p < 0.001, FDR-corrected). Amidst the generic GMV reduction that is shared with non-TRS patients, patients with TRS have specific prefrontal-limbic structural deficits with a unique non-dopaminergic chemoarchitecture. These findings indicate a putative molecular and structural basis for poor treatment response, guiding the development of second- and third-line pharmacotherapies for TRS
Comparing effects of episodic future thinking and cue salience to improve different types of prospective memory in typically developing school-age children
Prospective memory (PM) enables children to remember future intentions and is central to their development. Yet, school-age children face difficulties with remembering planned or assigned tasks and it is therefore crucial to uncover the methods for improving their PM performance. The present study examined the effects of two prominent methods - encoding PM tasks through episodic future thinking (EFT) versus increasing the salience of PM cues - in improving event- and time-based PM of school-age children. In two experiments, 8-12 year-old children (N = 126 and 126 respectively) completed three PM tasks and tasks tapping working memory, inhibition and shifting ability. Children were randomly assigned to the standard PM instruction group, the EFT group, or the cue salience group. In Experiment 1 (event-based PM), the cue salience group outperformed the other two groups in two computer-based PM tasks but not in a more naturalistic PM task. In Experiment 2 (time-based PM), the cue salience group outperformed the other two groups in all PM tasks, and this did not impair ongoing task performance and the cue salience group monitored the time less frequently. Moreover, children with lower shifting abilities showing larger benefits of salient cues on time-based PM. In both experiments, the EFT and standard groups had similar PM performance. These findings suggest that salient PM cues can improve event- and time-based PM in school-age children whereas EFT may not improve PM performance compared to standard encoding. Future research should investigate children's ability to voluntarily set salient cues for completing daily PM tasks.</p
Asian Evasion: Identifying and Countering a Bias Toward Avoiding Asians With COVID-19
Converging evidence points toward the COVID-19 pandemic having amplified lingering anti-Asian prejudice and discrimination, including the virus's geographical origin being highlighted on social media. This amplification is consistent with theoretical frameworks and empirical findings that connect moral disapproval to biological aversion. Furthermore, experimental literature suggests that prejudicial stereotypes (e.g., of Black criminality) can prompt behavioral discrimination (e.g., disproportionate aggression in shoot/don't-shoot simulation tasks). Hence, we tested across four experiments (N = 2,844) whether prejudicial stereotypes of Asian infectivity, prominent during the COVID-19 era, might analogously trigger disproportionate avoidance. White participants (Experiments 1 and 2, United Kingdom and United States, crowdsourced) cross-culturally exhibited a pattern of Asian evasion on a custom-made approach-avoidance simulation task: they more readily avoided infected targets when Asian and more readily approached uninfected targets when White. However, Asian evasion waned after exposure to both associative pairings unsupportive of the stereotype and explicit media critique of the stereotype (Experiments 3 and 4: United States, crowdsourced). Our findings highlight how, even if the threat of COVID-19 induced anti-Asian aversions consistent with historical hatreds (i.e., "yellow peril"), some of those aversions may be readily remediated
Clinical Diagnostic and Prognostic Value of Residual Language Learning Ability in Patients with Disorders of Consciousness
Recent research suggests that the detection of preserved cognitive function can assist in the diagnosis and prognosis of patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC). This study investigates EEG signals as indicators of neural activity associated with the processing of transitional probabilities during a learning paradigm in patients with DoC. By examining the sensitivity to transitional probabilities across levels of consciousness, we aim to assess the potential value of this indicator in clinical diagnosis and prognosis. We collected EEG recordings from 51 DoC patients (10 female) and 26 healthy controls (9 female). EEG activity was recorded while participants listened to artificial vocabulary speech sequences before and after the learning phase. Intertrial phase coherence (ITPC) was used to examine differences in neural responses in different learning phases. Results showed that minimally conscious patients showed a significant increase in the word-tracking response after the learning phase, similar to healthy controls. Moreover, their learning-mediated word-rate ITPC difference correlated significantly with their Coma Recovery Scale-Revised score and 6 month outcome. However, these correlations were absent in unresponsive wakefulness syndrome patients. Crucially, differences in vocabulary ITPC before and after the learning phase effectively discriminated between healthy controls and patients, as well as between minimally conscious and unresponsive wakefulness syndrome patients. Combining EEG indicators with clinical performance accurately predicted patients' prognosis. In conclusion, the language learning paradigm has the potential to contribute to both diagnosis and prognosis in this challenging population, thereby significantly reducing prognostic uncertainty in medical decision-making and benefiting the rehabilitation of DoC patients.</p
Alexithymia and Empathy in Parent-Youth Dyads: An Actor-Partner Interdependence Model Analysis
Parent-child interaction plays a key role in the development and maintenance of individual social emotional ability. Although studies have found that parents' alexithymia affects their offspring's social-emotional abilities, it is unclear how parents' and children's alexithymia affect each other and their empathic abilities. This study examined the relationship between college students' and their parents' alexithymia and empathy, focusing on both actor effects (individual-level associations) and partner effects (dyadic-level associations). A total of 1058 parent-youth dyads from a single college participated in the study, completing self-report measures of alexithymia and empathy. Using an actor-partner interdependence model analysis, the results revealed significant actor effects of alexithymia on cognitive empathy across all parent-youth dyads, though no such effects were found for affective empathy. Additionally, significant partner effects were observed, with sons' alexithymia linked to their fathers' cognitive empathy and mothers' affective empathy. These findings emphasize the complex dynamics of social-affective abilities within parent-youth relationships among college students and provide important implications for future research, intervention, and prevention efforts.</p
Effects of sensory processing sensitivity on depressive emotions in children with different intelligence in grades 5-9
Comprehensive assessment of phototherapy for depression disorder and interventional effects of mid-infrared phototherapy on depressive symptoms : a combined study of meta-analysis and randomized controlled trials
Alpha transcranial alternating current stimulation modulates pain anticipation and perception in a context-dependent manner
Pain perception is closely tied to the brain's anticipatory processes, particularly involving the suppression of sensorimotor alpha-oscillations, which reflect the system's readiness for incoming pain. Higher sensorimotor alpha-oscillation levels are correlated with lower pain sensitivity. Alpha transcranial alternating current stimulation (alpha-tACS) can enhance these oscillations, potentially reducing pain perception, with effects that may be sustained and influenced by the certainty of pain expectations. Hence, this study investigated the immediate and sustained effects of alpha-tACS on pain anticipation and perception, focusing on how these effects are shaped by the certainty of expectations. In a double-blind, sham-controlled design, 80 healthy participants underwent a 20-minute session of real or sham alpha-tACS over the right sensorimotor region. Behavioral and neural responses related to pain anticipation and perception were recorded before, immediately after, and 30 minutes poststimulation under both certain and uncertain conditions. Compared with sham stimulation, real alpha-tACS disrupted the habituation of laser-evoked potentials (N2-P2 complex), particularly under certain expectations, with effects persisting 30 minutes poststimulation. In anticipatory brain oscillations, real alpha-tACS enhanced somatosensory alpha 1-oscillations and increased midfrontal theta-oscillations in conditions of certainty, with theta-oscillation modulation showing sustained effects. Mediation analysis revealed that alpha-tACS reduced pain reactivity by enhancing somatosensory alpha 1-oscillations but increased pain reactivity through the enhancement of midfrontal theta-oscillations, with the latter effect being more pronounced. These findings suggest that while alpha-tACS may provide pain relief through somatosensory alpha-oscillation augmentation, its stronger and longer-lasting impact on midfrontal theta-oscillations could lead to hyperalgesia, particularly in the context of certain pain expectations.</p
