Numerical evaluation of virtual mass force coefficient of single solid particles in acceleration

    No full text
Virtual mass force is an indispensable component in the momentum balance involved with dispersed particles in a multiphase system. In this work the accelerating motion of a single solid particle is math-ematically formulated and solved using the vorticity-stream function formulation in an orthogonal curvi-linear coordinate system. The total drag coefficient was evaluated from the numerical simulation in a range of the Reynolds number (Re) from 10 to 200 and the dimensionless acceleration (A) between -2.0 to 2.0. The simulation demonstrates that the total drag is heavily correlated with A, and large decel-eration even drops the drag force to a negative value. It is found that the value of virtual mass force coef-ficient (CV) of a spherical particle is a variable in a wide range and difficult to be correlated with A and Re. However, the total drag coefficient (CDV) is successfully correlated as a function of Re and A, and it increases as A is increased. The proposed correlation of total drag coefficient may be used for simulation of solid-liquid flow with better accuracy. Coordination-assembled myricetin nanoarchitectonics for sustainably scavenging free radicals

    No full text
Oxidative stress can lead to permanent and irreversible damage to cellular components and even cause cancer and other diseases. Therefore, the development of antioxidative reagents is an important strategy to alleviate chronic diseases and maintain the redox balance in cells. Small-molecule bioactive compounds have exhibited huge therapeutic potential as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Myricetin (Myr), a well-known natural flavonoid, has drawn wide attention because of its high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer efficacy. Especially regarding antioxidation, Myr is capable of not only chelating intracellular transition metal ions for removing reactive oxygen species, but also of activating antioxidant enzymes and related signal pathways and, thus, of sustainably scavenging radicals. However, Myr is poorly soluble in water, which limits its bioavailability for biomedical applications, and even its clinical therapeutic potential. The antioxidant peptide glutathione (GSH) plays a role as antioxidant in cells and possesses good hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. However, it is easily metabolized by enzymes. To take advantages of their antioxidation activity and to overcome the abovementioned limitations, GSH, Zn2+, and Myr were selected to co-assemble into Myr-Zn2+-GSH nanoparticles or nanoarchitectonics. This study offers a new design to harness stable, sustainable antioxidant nanoparticles with high loading capacity, high bioavailability, and good biocompatibility as antioxidants

Large-scale chemical vapor deposition synthesis of graphene nanoribbions/carbon nanotubes composite for enhanced membrane capacitive deionization

    No full text
The composite comprised of graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibited significantly enhanced electro-chemical performance due both to the improved dispersion and inhibition of restacking of graphene and CNTs. In this work, graphene nanoribbons (GNRs)/CNTs composite (GNRs/CNTs) was synthesized on gram-scale by chemical vapor deposition. Under optimal growth conditions, the yield of GNRs/CNTs as high as 26 g per gram catalyst could be achieved in 30 min growth time. The morphology and quality of the as-synthesized composite was verified by using SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties of GNRs/CNTs was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge techniques. GNRs/CNTs exhibited specific capacitance of 242.3 F/g at 0.5 A g(-1), which was over 4 times of that of CNTs. The GNRs/ CNTs based electrodes exhibited excellent cycling stability at 1 A g(-1) for over 4000 cycles, which can be attributed to the excellent electrical conductivity and the unique structure. When employed as electrode for membrane capacitive desalination, the desalination capacity of 16.46 mg g(-1) has been achieved under 1.2 V with 500 mg L-1 NaCl solution as feeding water

Preparation of Mg-Nd Alloys by Magnesiothermic Reduction in Molten Salt

    No full text
A new approach that was designed to prepare Mg-Nd binary alloys via molten-salt-mediated magnesiothermic reduction by using Nd2O3 and Mg metal as raw materials was presented. The overall approach was based on a chemical pathway that synergistically integrated a series of simple steps to produce Mg-Nd alloys that could meet the requirement of Nd content in commercial Nd-containing magnesium alloys. The key steps included preparation of NdCl3-containing molten salt, the reduction of NdCl3 by Mg in molten salt, and the removal of MgCl2 from molten salt. The results showed that this approach could indeed prepare Mg-(6 to 18) weight percent Nd binary alloys, and the remaining molten salt could be recycled after being treated with NdF3. When other parameters were fixed, the Nd content in alloy could be adjusted only by adjusting the concentration of NdCl3 and MgCl2 in molten salt. Besides, a decrease in temperature or an increase in the mass ratio of molten salt to Mg could further increase the Nd content in alloy when other conditions were fixed
