A Eficácia dos Meios de Comunicação na Escolha de um Destino Turístico – Numa Ótica Geracional

    No full text
This master's thesis investigates the effectiveness of the media when choosing a tourist destination from a generational perspective. It starts by introducing the concept of old media and new media (Manovich, 2002), where old media includes newspapers and magazines, fairs, partnerships, word of-mouth, TV and radio commercials, and outdoor commercials, and new media consists of sites and blogs, social media, online commercials, influencers, and APPs. This is followed by a characterization of four generational groups – Baby Boomers (Samuel, 2017), Generation X (Twenge, 2023), Generation Y (Dash et al., 2021) and Generation Z (Aslam & Hassan, 2023). This study explores the level of influence that the different media channels have on potential buyers from the four Generations when choosing a tourist destination. It is based on a univariate approach, including field research, analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, trends, preferences and behaviors. The findings of the analysis suggest that old media is preferred by the Baby Boomers’ Generation, while new media is shown to have a stronger influence over all other Generations included in the study. Moreover, word-of-mouth, as an old media channel, has been identified as the most preferred channel across all four Generations. By bringing the above insights to light, this dissertation hopes to contribute to a more holistic and updated understanding of this relationship between the media and the choice of tourist destinations across different Generations in the context of Relational Marketin

The Effect of Nutritional Intervention in Nutritional Risk Screening on Hospitalised Lung Cancer Patients

    No full text
(This article belongs to the Special Issue Nutritional Status and Interventions for Patients with Cancer—2nd Edition)Background: Lung cancer (LC) patients are prone to suffer from malnutrition. Malnutrition negatively affects patients’ response to therapy, increases the incidence of treatment-related side effects, and decreases survival. Early identification of LC patients who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition can promote recovery and improve prognosis. Objective: This study aimed to assess the risk and nutritional status of lung cancer patients who are hospitalised, as well as to evaluate the impact of nutritional intervention on the risk of malnutrition. Methods: From January 2022 to December 2023, 53 LC patients hospitalised in a pulmonology department had their nutritional risk (initial and final) and nutritional status (initial) assessed. All were selected for nutritional intervention. Nutrition counselling was the first intervention option, along with dietary changes with/without oral nutritional supplements. Results: At the time of hospitalisation, 90.6% of the patients were at nutritional risk, 45.3% were classified as moderately malnourished, and 35.8% were classified as severely underweight. After the hospitalisation, 73.6% were at nutritional risk at the time of discharge, suggesting a statistically significant decrease in the number of patients with nutritional risk. Conclusions: Most LC patients hospitalised presented an altered nutritional status. Our study suggests that a nutritional intervention must be implemented to reduce malnutrition risk, which may impact prognosis. The comprehensive nutritional problems experienced by LC patients require nutritional assessment and improved individually tailored nutritional support. This project was supported by FCT/MCTES UIDP/05608/2020 (https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDP/05608/2020) and UIDB/05608/2020 (https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDB/05608/2020)

    No full text
The increase in plastic production and consumption has led to significant environmental challenges. Sustainable plastic management within the circular economy emerges as a strategic approach to mitigate environmental impacts, promoting the reuse and recycling of these materials. Oceans are crucial for life on Earth, providing a wide range of ecosystem services that sustain biodiversity and human well-being. However, the growing amount of plastic in the oceans poses a significant threat to these marine ecosystems. The specific goal of this research is to address plastic pollution in the oceans and actions like those of Ocean Cleanup to mitigate the harmful effects of this pollution. Plastic reaches the oceans through countries that do not engage in any collection or treatment of this plastic. It is also known where the largest concentrations of plastic in the oceans are found. It is essential to understand how plastic reaches the oceans, and how it is collected and treated. This gives rise to the need for a case study with the selected institution. The dissertation will also explore the concept of Circular Economy, its principles, and its environmental benefits

Living With Persistent Respiratory Symptoms of Long COVID: Qualitative Study Among Brazilian Adults 12 Months After Acute Infection

    No full text
Introduction: The majority of those infected with COVID‐19 undergo a brief duration of clinical illness. In certain instances, symptoms endure for months or years after the initial viral exposure—a condition characterized as Long COVID (LC). Theexperience of this illness remains largely unexplored as it has only recently surfaced. This study aims to understand therepercussions of persistent respiratory post‐COVID symptoms in Brazilian adults 12 months after SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. Methods: A constructivist grounded theory study was employed. Data were collected through individual interviews with adultswith persistent respiratory symptoms of Long COVID in Brazil. Data collection took place between September 2023 andFebruary 2024. Data analysis was performed on a constant comparative basis and concurrent with data collection to understandthe findings. Results: Twenty‐four individuals (12 females, 12 males) with a median age of 43.29 ± 9.09 years participated. The data analysisgenerated a central category—living with the long‐term effects of COVID‐19: breathlessness pervades everything—aroundwhich three categories emerged: (1) imbalance between life before and after being infected by COVID‐19; (2) living with acutepost‐COVID respiratory symptoms; and (3) struggling with persistent post‐COVID respiratory symptoms. Conclusion: Our analysis of the perceived needs of individuals with Long COVID underscores the urgent necessity forlegislative reform to acknowledge LC as a disability that requires clear diagnostic criteria. Approaches to treatment andrehabilitation are required to evaluate the extent to which functioning and disability improve. Lastly, this study highlights thecomplex problems encountered by individuals with Long COVID, including employment uncertainties, everyday tasks andsocial relationships. This study was financed in part by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior—Brasil (CAPES)—Finance Code 001 andConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)—Processo no. 402,882/2020‐2. O Impacto do Business Intelligence no Desempenho Organizacional

    No full text
In this context, BIemerges as a key tool to support managers in data analysis and decision-making processes, thereby contributing to competitiveness and, consequently, to the improvement of organizational performance. Accordingly, this dissertation aims to analyse the impact of BI on organizational performance, with a focus on both financial and non-financial performance indicators. The theoretical framework, as well as the data collection and analysis, seeks to contribute to the deepening of this area of study by identifying the indicators with the greatest influence on company performance. To this end, a quantitative research approach was adopted, using two main data sources: a questionnaire applied to assess non-financial indicators, and the SABI platform, from which financial data were extracted for three distinct periods (before, during, and after BI implementation). In practical terms, the statistical analysis was carried out using the SPSS software. For the analysis of questionnaire data, the following tests were applied: reliability test (Cronbach's alpha), ordinal regression, Chi-Square independence test, and Fisher's exact test. Regarding the analysis of financial data, normality tests (Shapiro-Wilk) and comparative tests (Wilcoxon) were used to assess significant differences across the defined time periods. In summary, the results show a statistically significant improvement in organizational performance following the adoption of BI solutions. From a financial perspective, there was a clear positive evolution in financial indicators (GVA, ROI, TO and ROA) after the implementation of BI systems, compared to the previous period. On the other hand, in the nonfinancial dimension, it was concluded that the adoption of BI systems positively influenced all non-financial variables (except for the launch of new products), contributing overall to improved organizational performance

Analysis of Frailty Indices Based on Sociodemographic and Clinical Determinants in Older Women

    No full text
Background: The aim of this study was to analyze levels of frailty, across physical, psychological, social, and overall dimensions, according to marital status, age, number of diagnosed illnesses, and number of medications taken in community-dwelling older women. Methods: The study included a total of 94 older women, aged between 60 and 89 years. All participants completed a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, as well as an instrument to measure physical, psychological, and social frailty, along with the total frailty score in the study participants. Group comparison test, such as the Kruskal–Wallis test, was applied. Results: Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in frailty were associated with marital status, clinical burden, and polypharmacy, with widowed/divorced individuals, those with more diagnosed diseases, and those taking more medications exhibiting higher physical and total frailty levels, while psychological frailty was notably higher in the oldest age group. Conclusions: The results indicate that physical and social interventions should be more relevant for older women with greater social isolation, as they may increase frailty indices and consequently the risk of hospitalization, institutionalization, and mortality.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Infographics for Teaching Reading and Writing in Higher Education

Upon entering university, students must acquire a range of knowledge that will enable them to cope with their first academic activities successfully. However, this knowledge requires the development of a skill set that enables them to work with specialized texts. Particularly in those careers where the learning of Linguistics is relevant, novice students must become aware that language is a subject of study. Therefore, they need, on the one hand, to learn and understand its conceptualizations and technical explanations. On the other hand, they also have to employ language to communicate the specific knowledge that pertains to the subject, while adhering to the requirements of academic genres. In this context, reading and writing often become obstacles as students are not familiar with academic discourse. In this article, we propose a work plan to be implemented in a first-year class, using infographics to scaffold students' work in their reading and writing processes. Specifically, our focus will be on the task of reading and searching for information to subsequently create a text in infographic format. To accomplish this, as a theoretical framework, we will draw upon the genre-based pedagogy and Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday 2003; Martin and Rose 2018), as well as Moyano's proposals (2013, 2017). This approach is necessary as the teaching of reading and writing requires didactic proposals that, based on evidence, enable students to improve their performance, while also providing clear and precise steps that consolidate their learning before advancing towards new challenges.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
