Background: Current health policies emphasize the central role of the family in the provision of nursing care, recognizing that individual health is deeply influenced by the family context. In this regard, the practice of specialist nurses in Family Health Nursing should be guided by a collaborative approach, in partnership with the family, recognizing it as the primary unit of care. This approach has proven to be promising, leading to significant health gains. It is therefore essential to understand the importance nurses attribute to the family within the care process, as well as to identify the factors that influence this perception. Such understanding is crucial to fostering a more conscious, effective, and family-centered nursing practice, contributing to the strengthening of family health as a central axis of nursing care. Understanding nurses’ perspectives and attitudes regarding the integration of families into the care process will allow us to determine the path that nursing science must follow so that the inclusion of families in nursing care becomes an effective reality across all areas of nursing intervention. (Frade et al., 2021).
Goals: To identify and describe nurses’ attitudes toward the involvement of families in care, to understand the importance they attribute to such involvement, and to explore how these attitudes are related to their sociodemographic and professional characteristics.
Method: This is a quantitative, descriptive-correlational, and cross-sectional study conducted with 29 nurses from the northern region of Portugal. The data collection instrument consisted of a sociodemographic and professional characterization questionnaire and the scale 'Importance of Family in Nursing Care – Nurses’ Attitudes' (Oliveira et al., 2011).
Results: The sample consisted of 29 nurses, with a mean age of 44.45 years. The majority were married or in a civil partnership (82.8%), and most held a bachelor’s degree (75.9%). Regarding professional titles, generalist nurses represented the majority (51.7%). Among nurse specialists, the most common areas of specialization were Child and Pediatric Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Nursing, both at 20.7%. Participants worked in various healthcare settings, with the majority (55.2%) employed in Family Health Units. The average length of professional experience was 21.38 years. Concerning training in Family Health Nursing, 62.1% reported having received such training, with most of them (38.9%) having completed it in an academic setting. With regard to attitudes toward family involvement in nursing care, the results reveal a supportive stance, highlighting the family as a central element in the care process. The total mean score obtained on the scale 'Importance of Family in Nursing Care – Nurses’ Attitudes' was 85 points, with a standard deviation of 7.85, reflecting an overall positive attitude among the sample towards the involvement of the family in care. Conclusion: Although no statistically significant associations were found, the data indicate that the nurses surveyed demonstrate favorable and supportive attitudes toward the family, recognizing and valuing its role in the care process. Overall, the results present an encouraging outlook regarding the integration of the family into nursing care, reflecting a positive predisposition among professionals. Despite the absence of statistically significant findings, the observed trends highlight the importance of reinforcing both educational and institutional strategies that promote more inclusive nursing practices, centered on the family context of the patient. This approach may contribute to further consolidating the family’s role as a partner in the therapeutic process and improving health outcomes
Spatial Distribution and Post-COVID-19 Health Complications in Older People: A Brazilian Cohort Study
This article belongs to the Section Geriatric MedicineBackground/Objectives: In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 have progressively displayed a range of symptoms linked to protracted COVID during the post-acute phase of illness. Concurrently, in several nations globally, the phenomenon of population aging has been intensifying. In this scenario, the aged population has become both vulnerable and high-risk during the acute phase of COVID-19, and faces significant dangers associated with long-COVID. This study seeks to analyze the incidence and spatial distribution of health complications in older people affected by COVID-19, in the first year of the pandemic (2020), in the State of Paraná, as well as to identify the factors associated with the development of cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory, and metabolic diseases. Method: An observational and retrospective study was carried out in the Brazilian state of Paraná. Participants were randomly selected from two databases. A total of 893 older people (≥60 years) participated in the study 12 months after acute COVID-19 infection. Telephone questionnaires were applied between March and December 2021. The Moran index test, logistic regression, and Poisson models were used to analyze the data. Results: In terms of age, most participants (66%) were between 60 and 69 years old, 25.8% were between 70 and 79 years old, and 8.2% were 80 years old or older. Most participants were female (51.2%), white (98.1%), had a partner (69.8%), and had been hospitalized due to COVID-19 (59.3%). Cardiovascular diseases were the most frequent in the population (39.5%), followed by metabolic diseases (27.3%). The long-term use of medication was associated with the development of metabolic diseases (aOR = 9.8), cardiovascular diseases (aOR = 6.6), and diseases in multiple organic systems (aOR = 3.2); living alone was associated with neurological diseases (aOR = 2.5), and the age group of 80 years or older (aOR = 2.4) was associated with cardiovascular events. The spatial distribution showed that complications in body groups are distributed randomly among the health regions of the state, with no influence from neighboring locations. Conclusions: Post-COVID-19 health complications are more frequent in older adults who have comorbidities and long-term medication use. Therefore, long-term monitoring of these individuals and investment in public policies for rehabilitation and prevention of complications are necessary. This work was funded by Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)—grant number: 001/2023.
AS CRIANÇAS DEVEM SER OUVIDAS - ESTUDO SOBRE A PARTICIPAÇÃO ATIVA DAS CRIANÇAS DO 1.º CICLO NUM PROJETO ESCOLAR - UMA ESCOLA DA REGIÃO DE LEIRIA

Physiotherapy Intervention for Promoting Comfort in Palliative Care Patients: A Focus Group Study
Article number - 2167This article belongs to the Special Issue Physiotherapy in Advanced Cancer and Palliative CareBackground/Objectives: Population aging and the rise in chronic diseases challenge healthcare systems to adopt person-centered approaches, especially in palliative care (PC), where symptom management remains limited. Physiotherapy plays a key role in alleviating discomfort but faces inconsistent integration in Portugal due to lack of recognition. Variations in intervention methods hinder uniform care delivery, limiting timely patient access to comfort-focused treatments and knowledge. This study aims to deepen the understanding of physiotherapy’s role in Portuguese PC to improve its integration into teams and enhance patient access to comfort care. Methods: This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with online focus groups (FG), guided by Krueger and Casey’s methodology and adhering to the COREQ checklist. A non-probabilistic convenience sample of physiotherapists working in palliative care across mainland Portugal and the islands was selected based on inclusion criteria. Three FGs were planned with up to ten participants each. However, due to availability and attendance issues, only 15 physiotherapists participated: 5 in FG1 (in-hospital PC units), 6 in FG2 (inpatient units), and 4 in FG3, the minimum appropriate number from community-based units. Results: Physiotherapy plays a crucial yet underrecognized role in PC, emphasizing the need for its full integration into care teams rather than reliance on late, on-call referrals. Techniques such as positioning, mobilization, pain and dyspnea relief, adapted exercises, massage, music therapy, and emotional support are employed. Conventional physiotherapy tools are used and personalized according to the patient’s context, duration, setting, dosage, and individual needs. Conclusions: Physiotherapy should be recognized as a fundamental part of PC, contributing not only to the prolongation of life but also to ensuring comfort and dignity for patients and their families. To achieve this, its role within multidisciplinary teams must be strengthened and supported by regulations that guarantee access and the formal integration of physiotherapists. However, a significant gap remains in patients’ regular access to comfort-focused interventions at the appropriate time, perhaps due to the considerable variation in physiotherapy practices depending on the patient and care setting, which presents a challenge for knowledge development both in Portugal and globally. This research was funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), grant number Ref. Sustentabilidade, rendibilidade e liquidez das ações
sustentabilidade contribui positivamente para a liquidez das açõesThe relationship between sustainability and the financial dimensions of companies, namely
stock returns and liquidity, has been widely debated in the literature, but without consensus.
Some studies suggest that ESG practices improve liquidity by reducing information
asymmetry, while others indicate null or even negative effects, depending on the
methodology used and the context analyzed. Regarding stock returns, there is evidence that
ESG may be penalized by investors due to concerns about additional costs and short-term
uncertainties.
This dissertation empirically analyzes the impact of ESG practices on the stock returns and
liquidity of companies listed on the STOXX Europe 600 between 2013 and 2023. For this
purpose, panel data regression models were used. Stock returns were measured through
excess returns (Cheng & Huang, 2024), while liquidity was assessed using the measures
proposed by Amihud (2002) and Liu (2006), capturing different dimensions of this variable.
Much of the literature on the relationship between ESG and financial indicators focuses on
the U.S., Chinese, or global markets. Thus, this study contributes to the literature by
analyzing the European market. Additionally, it differentiates itself by separately
considering the three ESG pillars and using two liquidity measures, providing a broader
perspective.
The results indicate that ESG has a negative and statistically significant impact on stock
profitability, suggesting that investors may penalize sustainable companies. Regarding
liquidity, the effects are consistent across the metrics used: both Amihud and Liu measures
confirm that sustainability positively contributes to stock liquidity
Effects of a land and aquatic exercise-based program on pain, mobility and quality of life in patients with chronic low back pain: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
Background
Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a disease with significant functional, emotional and social impact. Several interventions are proposed for its management and exercise is one of main, land-based or water-based. This study describes a randomized controlled trial that will analyze the effect of a combined aquatic and land-based exercise program compared to an aquatic-based program on pain, functional incapacity and quality of life in adults with CLBP. Additionally, it will analyze the effects of exercise cessation in the same outcomes.
Methods and design
A blind randomized controlled trial will be developed with a 1:1 allocation ratio. Around 30 adults with mechanical CLBP will be randomly allocated in two groups. The experimental group (ALG) will complete an aquatic and land-based exercise program and control group (AG) will carry out only an aquatic program, both for 8 weeks. Participants will be assessed with Visual Analogue Scale, Oswestry Disability Index, Short-Form 36, Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia-13 and Modified-Modified Schober Test, collected at baseline (M0), after 8 weeks (M1) and 4 weeks after the end of the intervention (M2).
Discussion
This study may provide a relevant contribution to understand the potential effect of a combined land and aquatic exercise program on pain, functional disability, fear of movement, quality of life and lumbar mobility. The results may provide important information for CLBP management.
Trial registration
This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (registration number: NCT06641570; date of registration: October 14, 2024).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Operating in the metalworking industry, dedicated to the development and manufacture of customised equipment, the company is characterised by a high variety of parts and low volumes, manufactured and assembled in a final assembly stage. This type of production, marked by complexity and variability, makes management and control difficult, leading to traceability failures throughout the process.
In this context, the work began with a diagnosis of document and physical flows, complemented by a product withdrawal simulation, with the aim of identifying gaps and needs to be addressed in the system to be developed. The diagnosis revealed significant flaws in the traceability of raw materials and components, a lack of batch records and a FIFO system, as well as inefficiencies in the movement of parts between sections, resulting in component losses, assembly errors and unaccounted rework.
To respond to these challenges, a system based on QR codes was designed, integrated into the existing GestPro software, associated with the concept of ‘Volume’: sets of equipment or work pieces were organised into volumes, each identified by a label and associated with specific locations in the factory, with real-time recording and updating. The system was tested in two phases: in a first implementation, with simple labels accompanied by 2D drawings, and in a second, with the introduction of QR codes that allowed direct communication with the system and greater accuracy in the physical monitoring of volumes.
Analysis of the production orders tracked demonstrated the effectiveness of the system, although opportunities for improvement were identified, such as historical location records, automatic integration of information into transport guides, the creation of volumes also in turning, the use of metal labels in certain cases, and the implementation of FIFO with raw material batch records. In addition, the system made it possible to account for rework for the first time: 527 hours in four months (about 5% of total production), mainly due to errors in the development of parts and the disappearance of components, confirming the relevance of a complete traceability system.
In summary, the developed system proved to be functional and efficient, allowing for greater organisation and waste reduction. Although it needs optimisation, it constitutes a significant advance in the digitisation of HRV, reinforcing its competitiveness and aligning it with the principles of Industry 4.0
Pre-Exposure to α-Linolenic Acid Reduces Virulence of Cronobacter sakazakii in Galleria mellonella Infection Model
Article number - e70033Cronobacter sakazakii is a food-borne pathogen with infections notifiable in those under 12 months old. Current inhibition methods rely on manufacture and reconstitution guidelines. Fatty acids (FA) are a possible method of control, with reports showing FAs can be bactericidal and regulate virulence mechanisms such as biofilm formation. This research explores the efficacy of the long-chain FA α-linolenic (ALA) to reduce C. sakazakii virulence in vivo. Galleria mellonella larvae were injected with FA pre-treated C. sakazakii and viability monitored every 24 h over a total of 96 h. To show the interaction between the host immune system and C. sakazakii, haemocytes and bacterial cells were mixed and enumerated following incubation. To investigate the impact on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), 24 antibiotics were tested against C. sakazakii pretreated with ALA. Kaplan–Meier survival curves generated showed a dose-dependent increase in larval survival upon increased FA concentration. Regarding the immune evasion assay, data generated show increased C. sakazakii and decreased haemocyte counts in the same sample. From the AMR results, there was no statistically significant difference in inhibition zones when compared to the control, indicating no contraindications for current treatment options. α-linolenic acid is a common component of the human diet and is shown here to directly reduce virulence mechanisms including immune system evasion. Pre-treatment with ALA reduces the virulence of C. sakazakii, resulting in increased survival of G. mellonella larvae. This suggests that ALA may serve as a candidate for further evaluation as a potential agent against C. sakazakii.Funding: This work was funded by the Irish Research Council (GOIPG/2021/1257).
