Article number - 584This article belongs to the Special Issue Modelling of Indoor Air Quality and Thermal ComfortThe indoor climate quality in classrooms at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, was investigated as part of the 3SqAir project, supported by the Interreg SUDOE program. This research focused on two equipped classrooms with different ventilation systems: natural and mechanical ventilation. Both classrooms were continuously monitored for IEQ parameters: thermal comfort, indoor air quality, noise, and lighting during heating and cooling seasons. Air temperature, relative humidity, CO2 concentration, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, sound pressure level, and illuminance were measured. Outdoor weather conditions were also recorded. The primary focus was on air temperature, CO2 concentrations, and relative humidity, while air change rates (ACH) were estimated using the Tracer Gas Method. The results showed inadequate thermal conditions in both classrooms, particularly during the heating season. Most weekly mean CO2 concentrations were within acceptable limits, while ACH were below standard recommendations in four CO2 decay phases. Simulations of CO2 decay revealed further air quality gaps in each room. Corrective measures within the 3SqAir project framework were suggested for approval and implementation while monitoring continues. This work represents the first phase in an evolving study towards developing sustainable strategies for improving indoor air quality in classrooms. This research was funded in whole or in part by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. No full text
This study aimed to examine the relationship between clients' perceptions of exercise physiologists' behaviors, motivational types, and their subsequent influence on exercise adherence over a six-month. Additionally, we assessed the financial impact of client dropout on fitness center revenues during this timeframe. Methods: A sample of 1,803 individuals (ages 18-54; M = 26.61, SD = 5.48) enrolled in fitness centers across Portugal participated in this study. Results: Over the six-month period, 42% of clients canceled their memberships, resulting in an estimated monthly revenue loss of €28,659.60 by the end of the sixth month. Cumulatively, the fitness centers experienced a total revenue loss of €110,393.27 during the study period. Conclusions: The findings suggest that need-supportive behaviors from physiologists are positively associated with autonomous motivation, which in turn promotes long-term exercise adherence. In contrast, need-thwarting behaviors are linked to controlled motivation, which negatively impacts exercise maintenance. These insights highlight the importance of motivational strategies in both client retention and financial sustainability for fitness centers.

FUNCTIONING AND POTENTIALITIES OF THE DIDACTIC COURSE AS A READING AND WRITING TEACHING DEVICE: THE GENRE INTERVIEW IN THE 3RD YEAR OF SCHOOLING

    No full text
In this article we intend to present a didactic device directed to the teaching of textual genres: the didactic path (JORGE, 2019; JORGE; GONÇALVES; COUTINHO, 2022). Conceived in the work programme of socio-discursive interactionism (BRONCKART, 1997), this device is inspired by the didactic sequence (DOLZ; NOVERRAZ; SCHNEUWLY, 2004) and teaching sequence (PEREIRA; CARDOSO, 2013; PEREIRA; CARDOSO; GRAÇA, 2013). After explaining the conceptual outlines of the didactic path, we will present the results of an investigation developed around this teaching device, in Portugal, concerning a primary school class (3rd grade), in 2022, focusing on the interview genre (printed, aimed at the juvenile public). Throughout the article, we will take account of the three stages that led the investigation: i) a previous description of the genre to be focused on (based on literature review and social reference practices analysis); ii) report of the didactic experience which had been carried out (recurring to participant observation, in the context of research on the practice itself (PONTE, 2002)); iii) analysis of the interview produced collectively by the students, at the final moment of the didactic path, taking into account three analysis dimensions: thematic, structural, linguistic, graphic. The results will show that, even in early moments of formal learning, the didactic path can prove to be an effective device in what concerns the learning and the development of textual and genological skills (reading and writing), linguistic skills (effective use of language/grammar, in texts) and metalinguistic skills (reflection on the social and communicative use of the language).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Systemic Approaches to Coopetition: Technology and Service Integration in Dynamic Ecosystems Among SMEs

    No full text
Article number - 97In the globalized, technologically advanced landscape, coopetition—simultaneously cooperating and competing—has become a key strategy for innovation and enhanced value creation. This research focuses on the impact of technology-driven coopetition networks in the Portuguese ornamental stone sector, using a framework based on Service-Dominant Logic (S-D Logic). It emphasizes the importance of resource integration, service exchange, and institutional arrangements in successful coopetition. Employing a two-phase experimental approach with selected small and medium enterprises (SMEs), this study assesses customer perceptions of product quality under traditional best practices versus those enabled by technology-driven coopetition networks. The results indicate a notable improvement in the customer-perceived quality and outcome consistency. The statistical analysis shows that these networks allow firms to better align with customer expectations, optimize resource allocation, and improve operational coordination. The findings highlight the strategic potential of coopetition networks, particularly when augmented by advanced technologies like IoT-based systems. These networks facilitate sustainable value co-creation and operational resilience by enabling firms to share expertise, distribute tasks, and synchronize efforts. This research contributes to the coopetition and S-D Logic literature by offering a practical framework for firms aiming to boost competitiveness and sustain growth in dynamic service ecosystems

Introduction: The analogic game demonstrated potential results in old people with decreased balance and fall risk, however related studies are scarce. Aim: The present study aimed to test the potential of an analogue game in improving balance and reducing the risk of falls, as well as to characterize the performance of the participants in the game and its relationship with the variables of balance and risk of falling. Method: Data were collected at three moments: initial (T0); after 6 weeks of intervention with game (T1) and final (T2), after 6 weeks without intervention with game. Correlations were calculated between the performance in the game in the different grids (S, M and L) and the balance indicators (Timed-up and Go Test (TUG) and Tinetti test); these tests were compared between the different periods. Results: Ten elderly people (87.60±7.25 years; 8 women) participated in the study, significantly improving TUG values only between T0-T1 (p=0.002). Values from Tinetti test improved significantly in the two intervention periods (p=0.001; p=0.006). The performance in the grid L showed correlation with the Tinetti test (T0 - ρ = -0.664; p = 0.036) and with the TUG only in the 2nd attempt (T0; r = 0.680; p = 0.030*). Conclusion: There is a potential benefit of analogue play in improving the risk of falls (TUG) in institutionalized elderly people. The implemented game, at its most demanding level (grid L), seems to fit the rehabilitation context, promoting learning over time. Unlocking the Power of Ads: A Cross-Cultural Examination of Consumers’ Advertising Value Perceptions

    No full text
The field of advertising has attracted significant interest from researchers. However, although previous studies suggest that attitudes and behavioral responses to advertising diverge across cultures, cross-cultural research to assess disparities in consumer behavior as a result of the perceived value of advertising is considered to be scarce. Building on the advertising value model and on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) framework, this study aims to explore cross-cultural similarities and differences in the consumers’ perceptions of the advertising value. We investigate the impact of informativeness, entertainment, credibility, and favorable predisposition toward advertising on the perceived value of an ad, and how this factor, in turn, influences brand image, word-of-mouth, and purchase intention across markets. Data were collected through an online survey addressed to two markets: Belarus and Portugal. A total of 293 valid answers were obtained, 155 from Belarus and 138 from Portugal. Data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Findings indicate that credibility and favorable predisposition toward advertising leverage the perceived value of an ad in both markets. However, results show that informativeness enhances the perceived value of an ad only in the Belarusian market, while entertainment has a significant positive influence only in the Portuguese market. Across both markets, the perceived value of advertising enhances brand image, which subsequently leverages word-of-mouth and purchase intention. This work was supported by National Funds of the FCT Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology within the project UIDB/04928/2020

Chemical Characterization and Bio-Screening of Neuroprotective Potential of Brazilian Brown Seaweed Canistrocarpus cervicornis in 6-OHDA-Induced Neurotoxicity Model

    No full text
Brazilian native seaweed Canistrocarpus cervicornis (Ochrophyta, Dictyotaceae) is recognized for its chemodiversity, particularly cyclic diterpenes and polysaccharides, yet its relevance to neurological disorders remains unexplored. This study evaluated the neuroprotective potential of a hydroethanolic extract (ECCH), its polar fraction (CCFPol), a dichloromethane extract (ECCD), and eight derived fractions (CCF1–2, CCF3, CCF4, CCF5–6, CCF7, CCF8–10, and CCF11–15). Cytotoxicity was evaluated in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells, and neuroprotection was examined against 6-OHDA–induced toxicity. The mitochondrial membrane potential, ROS and H2O2 generation assays were conducted to explore the mechanisms underlying the observed effects. Among the key findings, the CCF3 fraction exhibited a high content (75.04%) of dolastane-type diterpenoids. Both CCFPol (100 µg/mL) and CCF3 (1 µg/mL) increased cell viability to 68.43 ± 4.60% and 60.61 ± 0.80%, respectively, compared with 6-OHDA–treated cells (50.70 ± 2.71%). Additionally, CCF3 and CCFPol reduced H2O2 levels (200.0 ± 18.19% and 195.5 ± 16.13%, respectively, vs. 6-OHDA-treated cells: 302.2 ± 17.07%) and lowered intracellular ROS (122.6 ± 22.7% and 129.6 ± 19.4%, respectively, vs. 6-OHDA-treated cells: 153.0 ± 32.7%). This is the first study to demonstrate the neuroprotective potential of the C. cervicornis in a 6-OHDA-induced neurotoxicity cellular model, contributing to the understanding of marine bioactive resources and their relevance for neurological research. Additional studies aimed at isolating the active constituents and clarifying their mechanisms of action will further strengthen and expand the biological relevance of this specie as source of neuroprotective agents. We would like to thank the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) for PhD and sandwich doctorate scholarship (TCS), the INCT Nanotechnology for Sustainable Agriculture, the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel–Brazil (MEC-CAPES INCTNanoAgro #888887.986628/2024-00), and the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) for the technical fellowship TT IV-A [Process 2025/19.448-9] (J.M.C.O)

VULNFUSION: PLATAFORMA DE INTEGRAÇÃO DE FERRAMENTAS OPEN- SOURCE SAST

    No full text
Manual security analysis are slow and expensive, making static application security testing (SAST) tools essential for efficiently identifying vulnerabilities. However, SAST tools generate many false positives, requiring manual verification. This project proposes a platform, titled VulnFusion, that integrates multiple SAST tools to improve the robustness of security analysis and uses artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to enrich the results produced. The platform VulnFusion aims to reduce false positives, increase the efficiency of vulnerability detection, and assist in prioritizing mitigation efforts, adapting to the needs of developers and organizations. This document includes a brief review of existing open-source SAST tools, the development of the platform and the processes for aggregating and enriching results, and presents the tests performed and the results obtained. The results obtained demonstrated an improvement in both coverage and accuracy of vulnerability detection compared to the use of a single tool, with F1-score gains for categories such as command injection (47.8%) and SQL injection (36.5%) following the integration of multiple SAST tools and AI-based enrichment
