Psychometric Properties and Rasch Validation of the Herth Hope Index in a Sample of Portuguese Higher Education Students During a Pandemic

    No full text
This article belongs to the Special Issue Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Students and Teachers: Strategies for School-Based Interventions The authors express their profound gratitude to the students who generously contributed to the study and to the staff who participated in the recruitment process.Article number - 1087A greater understanding of health-promoting factors, such as hope, is crucial for preventing and enhancing the mental health of higher education students. The Herth Hope Index (HHI) is a 12-item tool that has been widely used to assess a comprehensive, non-temporal perception of hope. While this instrument has been used extensively in adult populations, most studies focus on clinical populations. Additionally, the HHI reveals inconsistencies in terms of scale dimensionality and items to be retained. Therefore, this study sought to assess the HHI’s psychometric characteristics in a sample of Portuguese Higher Education students. The person response validity, internal scale validity, unidimensionality, and uniform differential item functioning were assessed using a Rasch rating scale model. A total of 2227 higher education students participated during the e-survey activation period (spring semester of 2020). The mean age of the sample was 22.5 ± 6.2 years (range 18–59 years). Three of the twelve items (#3, #5, and #6) failed to satisfy the established criterion for goodness of fit. Following the elimination of these three items, the resultant nine-item scale exhibited satisfactory item fit to the model, appropriate unidimensionality (52.4% of the variance explained), enough person goodness of fit, sufficient separation, and the absence of differential item functioning. The 9-item version of the HHI had psychometric properties comparable to the original 12-item version. This study also underscores the importance of validated instruments for assessing hope-based interventions in academic contexts. Further research is necessary to explore the potential dimensions inherent to the hope concept and to identify variations in hope profiles among items influenced by cultural attributes. This work is also supported by national funds through FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.

Relationship Between Corporate Social Responsibility and Financial Performance: Evidence from French Companies

    No full text
This dissertation aims to analyse the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and financial performance in the French stock market over a five-year period, from 2019 to 2023, using companies listed on the CAC-40 index. The main objective of this study is to answer the question of whether CSR influences companies' financial performance, thus providing valuable insights not only for private companies, but also for investors and other stakeholders. The model used is a fixed effects model, excluding sector dummy variables. The results show that CSR is not statistically significant for the financial performance of French companies in the CAC-40 index. The variables used as proxies for financial performance were return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE). The ESG rating was used to assess CSR.

ARTISTIC EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: DESIGN OF A PROTOTYPE FOR PEDAGOGICAL INTERVENTION AND INNOVATION TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

    No full text
O estudo contribui para a inovação pedagógica ao propor um modelo discutível, adaptável e transferível a diferentes contextos académicos e comunitários, para além de favorecer novas possibilidades de uso do EDR.This study presents the process of developing an intervention and pedagogical innovation prototype that aims to promote reflection on the importance of aesthetic and artistic education in human and community transformation and development, valuing issues of sustainability and cultural development. Using the Educational Design Research (EDR) approach, the study was implemented in the Pedagogical Excellence and Innovation in Co-creation Project (EPIC) to create a structured pedagogical roadmap. The research was carried out in two phases: (1) analysis of the institutional, conceptual and pedagogical foundations of the prototype, highlighting the need for flexible and intercultural learning environments; and (2) design of the prototype, documenting the various dimensions of the pedagogical roadmap, taking into account the conceptual analysis and the selected model of pedagogical innovation, its structure and applicability in higher education. The results suggest that integrating artistic and pedagogical practices promotes greater sustainable, critical and inclusive awareness in students. The study contributes to pedagogical innovation by proposing a model that is debatable, adaptable and transferable to different academic and community contexts, as well as encouraging new possibilities for EDR use.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

From Knowledge to Action: How Portuguese Higher Education Students Engage with Circular Economy Principles

    No full text
Article number - 3279(This article belongs to the Special Issue Ecological Engineering and Circular Economy)This study investigates the perceptions and practices of Portuguese higher education students regarding the circular economy (CE), emphasising their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours toward sustainable resource management. Carried out by the Working Group on Circular Economy and Waste Management of the Portuguese Sustainable Campus Network (RCS), the research used an online survey targeting students from 20 higher education institutions (HEIs), resulting in 400 responses. The findings indicate that while students generally hold positive views of the CE, their understanding of its practical applications, such as waste reduction and resource efficiency, remains limited. Only a small proportion of students reported exposure to CE-related topics in their curriculum, revealing a gap in academic integration. This study also identifies significant demographic variations in CE awareness and practices, influenced by factors such as age, field of study, and employment status. These insights underscore the need for HEIs to strengthen CE education and actively involve students in hands-on sustainability initiatives, fostering a generation equipped to drive the transition toward a circular economy. The authors would like to acknowledge the Ethics Committee of the Polytechnic University of Beja for analysing the research proposal and ensuring compliance with ethical issues. The authors would also like to thank the Sustainable Campus Network—Portugal for creating the Working Group on Circular Economy and Waste Management, which includes the authors and made this research possible. Mergers and Acquisitions: Does Hiring Financial Advisors Make a Difference?

    No full text
This study conducts a meta-analysis to address inconsistencies and fragmented understanding regarding the role of financial advisors in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). We aim to quantitatively synthesize existing empirical evidence to clarify the deter- minants influencing the engagement of financial advisors and, critically, how their characteristics and transaction contexts im- pact the operational and financial outcomes of M&A deals. Through a systematic literature review and meta-analytic approach, we analyzed 65 empirical studies (articles, theses, and dissertations) to identify and classify variables explaining the selection and influence of financial advisors on M&A performance. Our analysis specifically correlated independent variables measuring financial advisor attributes (e.g., experience, competence, and reputation) with dependent variables reflecting operational per- formance (transaction completion time) and financial performance (e.g., CAR, SCAR, ROA, ROE, and EBITDA). The findings indicate that the ability to foster positive operational (shorter completion times) and financial outcomes is a primary driver for engaging financial advisors in M&A. Financial advisors demonstrably contribute to more efficient deal closures, higher financial returns, and reduced completion times. The meta-analysis reveals significant moderating effects of financial advisor reputation and M&A complexity (proxied by size) on the relationship between advisor engagement and M&A performance, explaining heterogeneity in prior research. This study significantly advances M&A literature by providing a robust, quantitative synthesis that moves beyond prior inconclusive findings. We demonstrate that financial advisors are critical in navigating M&A complex- ities, and their effectiveness is contingent upon their reputation and the transaction's inherent complexity. By elucidating these moderating roles, our meta-analysis offers a clearer, more nuanced understanding of when and how financial advisors make a difference, thereby informing both academic theory and practical decision-making in M&A strategy. This work was supported by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel–Brazil (CAPES)—Financing Code 001.

Implementation and evaluation of didactic pathway in Higher Education

    No full text
This article presents a reflection of pedagogy in higher education, focusing on a specific didactic procedure, called a didactic path (Jorge, 2019). The reflection started during a teaching-learning experience that took place at the curricular unit of a degree in Basic Education, in the 1st semester of the academic year 2022/2023. The experience aimed at the construction of a didactic poster, with a theoretical support, based on the development of theorization capacities and didactic transposition, by the students, in group work. Assuming the contours of a “case study”, the reflection is supported both by the report of the didactic path implemented, and by the qualitative analysis of four texts produced by a group of students during this path (initial and final versions of the didactic poster and the framework theoretical), or also by the answers of the same group of students to a written questionnaire, focused on the way in which the course was experienced/perceived and on the degree of satisfaction with the process and the final product. The analysis will allow us to conclude that the didactic resource implemented proved to be effective, in cognitive and socio-affective terms.
