JBI Evidence Synthesis 23(7):p 1308-1375, July 2025.Objective: The objective of this review was to map the characteristics of respiratory rehabilitation programs for people with Parkinson's disease. Introduction: Parkinson's disease is a progressive and heterogeneous neurodegenerative disease. Respiratory dysfunction is highly prevalent in people with Parkinson's disease and is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality. People with Parkinson's disease may experience respiratory dysfunction such as ineffective coughing and dyspnea. Complications, such as atelectasis and respiratory infections, significantly impact their self-care and quality of life. To mitigate its impact on people's lives, various respiratory rehabilitation programs have been developed and implemented. Many studies have examined this topic, yet respiratory rehabilitation programs vary significantly in structure and evaluated outcomes. Eligibility criteria: We considered studies focused on respiratory rehabilitation programs implemented to prevent or target one or more symptoms for adults (18 years and older) with Parkinson's disease, regardless of the disease stage. The programs could be provided by any health professional in any health care setting. Methods: We followed JBI methodology for conducting the scoping review, and the results were reported in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). A literature search was conducted across PubMed, CINAHL Complete (EBSCOhost), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (EBSCOhost), the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (EBSCOhost), Scielo, Scopus, PEDro, and ClinicalTrials.gov. Unpublished studies were identified via Google Scholar, DART-Europe, and MedNar. All search strategies were conducted on April 24, 2023. Sources published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese were included and no date restrictions were applied. Study selection and data extraction were conducted independently by 2 reviewers using a standardized extraction tool. Results: Thirty-three studies published between 2001 and 2023 were included. Studies were conducted in the USA, Brazil, Turkey, Chile, Australia, Taiwan, Czechia, Italy, Republic of Korea, Germany, India, and Israel. The sample sizes ranged from 1 participant to 75 participants. The combined sample size of all studies was 1007 participants. Most programs integrated respiratory muscle strength training using devices, targeting people with Parkinson´s disease in Hoehn and Yahr scale stages 1-3. Speech-language pathologists, physiotherapists, and medical doctors were the health professionals responsible for delivering these programs in home-based or clinical settings. A broad spectrum of outcomes related to respiratory function was reported. Additionally, the studies assessed other outcomes such as quality of life, functional capacity, motor symptoms, and fatigue. Conclusions: Respiratory rehabilitation programs for people with Parkinson's disease have predominantly targeted respiratory muscle strength training, without a multidisciplinary approach. More research is needed emphasizing inclusive studies in terms of exercises/interventions in respiratory rehabilitation programs, stages of disease progression, and with the adoption of a multidisciplinary approach. Article number- 2280(This article belongs to the Section Biomedical Engineering)In the current landscape of hearing rehabilitation, ear mold manufacturing typically involves the injection of silicone into the external ear canal (EEC) of each patient. This invasive procedure poses several risks, including the potential for silicone residue retention and tympanic membrane perforation, which may necessitate surgical intervention. To mitigate these risks, we present the design of a video otoscope that integrates a scanner capable of capturing high-precision, real-time images of the EEC’s geometry. The developed device allows (i) the generation of a 3D CAD model leading to the direct, quick, and low-cost production of customized hearing aids using 3D printing and (ii) the establishment of medical protocols for carrying out diagnoses and monitoring of hearing pathology evolution using methodologies based on Artificial Intelligence. Furthermore, the use of customized hearing aids that allow the application of Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS) and music therapy enhances audiology as an alternative and innovative way to treat cognitive and degenerative diseases, as well as pathological disorders.Carla Moura thanks the National funding by FCT—Foundation for Science and Technology, P.I., through the institutional scientific employment program-contract (CEECINST/00077/2021)

Chapter 9Digital nomadism, characterised by location-independent work and enabled by digital technologies, represents a promising path for destinations seeking to revitalise their economies and attract new residents, associated to their quality of life, welcoming communities and interesting leisure and tourism proposals. This study examines the interplay between digital nomads and local communities by examining host-guest interactions, their influence on perceived quality of life, and the evolving attitudes of residents towards tourism development. In-depth interviews with residents from a low-population density rural area and representatives from the local Destination Management Organization (DMO) were conducted. The findings from this case study provide valuable insights into how rural communities can manage and benefit from the growing trend of ‘remote working tourism', while also addressing potential challenges related to cultural integration, economic disparities, and community cohesion

Unveiling the power of supplier-country image on B2B customers' perceptions: Beyond the product’s beauty

    No full text
Article number - 102388Researchers in business-to-business (B2B) sectors often assume that findings regarding country-of-origin (COO) effects on end consumers can be directly applied to the industrial marketing context. This tendency to generalize can result in an inaccurate understanding of how buyers perceive COO information in B2B scenarios. This study investigates the effect of supplier-country image on international customers’ perceptions of both perceived product quality and relationship quality in a B2B market environment. We further examine the consequences of perceived product quality and relationship quality on supplier awareness and customer loyalty. Data collected from 182 international B2B buyers in the Portuguese footwear, molds, and wood products and furniture industries were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results indicate that supplier-country image influences the relationship quality dimensions (trust, commitment, and satisfaction) and perceived product quality. Moreover, trust and commitment enhance customer loyalty, while trust and satisfaction leverage supplier awareness. In contrast, perceived product quality only influences customer loyalty, albeit to a weaker extent. Thus, relationship quality plays a more significant role than perceived product quality in influencing supplier awareness and customer loyalty in B2B environments. These results challenge the notion that the impact of COO on end consumers can be equally applied in B2B contexts, and they expand our understanding of how supplier-country image affects relationship quality in the industrial setting. Furthermore, they draw managers’ attention to the importance of mitigating a potentially negative COO image through measures aimed at improving relationships. This work was supported by National Funds of the FCT– Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology within the projects UIDB/04928/2020, UIDB/SOC/04521/2020 and UIDB/00731/2020

    No full text
The work was supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia [UIDB/04928/2020].Regarding the popularity of social media platforms among consu- mers, influencer marketing is increasingly present in brands’ com- munication strategies. This study adds to the knowledge about the drivers of parasocial interactions with influencers by investigating not yet explored follower-influencer connections and their effects on consumers’ responses to the recommended brands. An online consumer survey was conducted among followers of social media influencers and the data were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The results show that follower-influencer moral admiration, perceived similarity, emo- tional closeness, and expression of positive feelings positively affect their parasocial interaction. In turn, the effects of these variables on consumer responses are fully or partially mediated by follower- influencer parasocial interaction on social media networks. Interestingly, followers’ skill admiration towards the influencer has no significant impact on parasocial interaction but has a positive significant direct impact on positive WOM and purchase intention of influencer recommend brands. Our findings demonstrate that influencer marketing communication is an effective strategy for improving consumer brand responses. Furthermore, to augment their marketing value, social media influencers need to promote parasocial interactions with followers. Our findings suggest novel recommendations to select influencers and manage influencer marketing value.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    No full text
The marine environment harbors some of the richest and most complex ecosystems with organisms capable of producing molecules that exhibit a wide range of bioactivities, with diverse industrial applicability. Algae are photosynthetic organisms exposed to several abiotic factors, such as nutrient availability, UV radiation, temperature and salinity, among others, whose variation promotes the production of secondary metabolites with different properties, including antioxidant capacity. In this work, the antioxidant potential of metabolites produced by the seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis was explored, aiming at the valorization of this seaweed in an industrial context. Algae biorefineries have proven to be a means of maximizing the use of natural resources to create value-added products. Thus promotes the green circular economy in response to current environmental problems. Therefore, the present study had as its motto the valorization of a by-product, the biomass of the seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis after immersion in oil to extract halogenated compounds. These compounds has been which shown to be a strong ally in the mitigation of enteric methane generated by ruminant animals. In collaboration with seaExpert, this internship aimed to explore the Asparagopsis taxiformis biorefinery, including the study of this biomass as a source of antioxidant compounds was proposed evaluating the effect of conditioning the biomass (container-dried or fresh) in aqueous and ethanolic extracts. The preliminary results obtained suggest that this biomass showed weak antioxidant power, however, concentrated ethanolic extracts compared to concentrated aqueous extracts demonstrated some antioxidant power. As such, it may be relevant to explore other bioactivities aiming at the recovery of this residue

    No full text
