Frequency of a single nucleotide polymorphism of ABCB1 gene in Hungarian population of border collies

A border collie kutyafajának több ismert genetikai hátterű, öröklődő betegsége is ismert, köztük gyógyszerkölcsönhatásokkal kapcsolatos mutációk is. Magyarországon egyre kedveltebb fajta, ezért fontos ismernünk a terheltségeit.

“From Witchcraft, to Wisdom, to Science. A XXIst century look at diagnostics and pharmacology in veterinary medicine, based on the “Nâçeri” (1333) by Abu Bakr Eddin Ibn El Moundir El Baïtar and on “Les secrets de différents auteurs” (1804), a manuscript by Hermann Voirol”

Beyond the historic dust, ancient texts on veterinary diagnostics and pharmacology are increasingly being rediscovered by scholars, historians, and medical practitioners alike. After having dusted the contents of those texts by freeing them from superstition and pseudo-science [which may be of a high socio-cultural interest but are to a lesser extent important in our context], what strikes the reader first is the wisdom and reverence reflected by most of these texts, wisdom based on the passing-on of purely empirical knowledge acquired through generations and from different cultures and reverence to the endless line of past generations of practitioners. Disregarding the precision of some of the diagnostics and timelessness of pharmacological remedies, even if they may seem bizarre when seen from a XXI century perspective, is a fundamental error, as proven by modern research focusing on the biochemical analysis of the ancient remedies, their interactions and pathogen effects. This thesis uses two ancient texts from different periods and cultural environments, which a priori would have nothing to do with one another to highlight the parallels between ancient therapies and modern treatments in addition to pharmacological and medical knowledge in different historical and cultural contexts. While some types of ancient treatments have no medical or scientific basis or justification and can be considered as “background noise”, echoing the days of superstition and witchcraft, many have therapeutic properties the workings and interactions of which were largely ignored in those old times and still need to be extensively studied today, as they continue to be in use in modern medicine

The evolutionary impact of domestication on the palpebral opening of ruminants

Evolution has been a driving factor in the development of life on Earth, and that process still drives the changes in species continuously. Some of these changes have been selected by humans to reach certain aims in terms of production or utilisation to help the human species. Others happen because the environment these animals are in change and they need to adapt to it, whether by developing new traits for their survival, or devolving traits that are no longer necessary. This thesis studies the impact of domestication in ruminants on one of the 5 main senses; vision. Especially, the size of the palpebral fissure that represents the maximum horizontal angle of vision. We decided to study this aspect in domestication specifically because domestication leads to the animals being protected by humans so they can grow and live until they can be useful to the humans that rear them. This security by humans consists of protection against weather, temperature, but mainly predators. We can suppose that the ruminants, in a position where they would not need their vision to look for predators, then said vision, might decrease because being highly developed would be obsolete. To test this hypothesis, I decided to compare the mean palpebral fissure length in between domesticated and wild ruminants. The domestic ruminants chosen were the cattle (Bos taurus), the goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) and the Sheep (Ovis aries), as these ruminants are the most widespread in terms of domestication. During a trip to South Africa, in the Western Cape, I retrieved measures on three species of large wild ruminants; the Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger), the Roan Antelope (Hippotragus equinus) and the African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer). These species were chosen due to how taxonomically close these species were to the domestic species used, how similar in size they were, and because I had enough animals to examine to make a proper study. The measures were made and recorded with the help of a calliper ruler under light anaesthesia. In the case of small wild ruminants, I went to Japan, in the Nara park south-east of Kyoto, where I could find Sika Deer (Cervus nippon), the measurements were taken using computerized photographic analysis

Molecular analyses of badger ectoparasites from Ireland

    No full text
Ectoparasites are economically important, because they may cause production loss, anaemia and discomfort to their hosts. Apart from this, blood-sucking arthropod ectoparasites can transmit so-called vector-borne pathogens from one host to another. In this study, Ireland was selected for sampling, taking into account that on islands the genetic background of ectoparasites and the spectrum of pathogens they may harbour are expected to be different from those in mainland Europe. Badgers were chosen as target animals, because they (and thus their ectoparasites) are not regularly transported between Ireland and other parts of Europe. In 2017 and 2018, the following ectoparasites have been collected from badgers in Ireland: 231 ticks, 73 fleas and 115 lice. Additionally, 131 ticks have been removed from hedgehogs, for comparison with those from badgers. The species of ectoparasites were identified according to standard keys

Importance of monitoring calving to decrease still-birth rate in dairy farms - Literature review

    Get PDF
SUMMARY The successful genetic selection for higher milk production caused a dramatic decline in the reproductive performance of dairy cows all over the world during the last decades. Achievement of optimum herd reproductive performance (calving interval of 12 or 13 months with the first calf born at 24 months of age) requires concentrated management activities, especially during calving and during the first 100 days after calving. There are several factors which may affect reproductive per-formance of dairy cows, however in this review only care¬ful surveillance and assis-tance at calving and their effects on milk production, reproductive performance as well as on newborn calves are discussed. Due to the fact that the cause of stillbirth with a non-infectious aetiology is likely to be multifactorial and difficult calving may explain only about half of them. Therefore it is very important to examine regularly the risk factors of stillbirth, especially in large-scale dairy farms. According to our recent experience, management plays a very important role in decreasing the prev-alence of stillbirth in large-scale dairy farms because introducing a camera system in the calving pen its rate decreased from 7.7% to 5.5%. Predicting the onset of calving in free-stall housing circum¬tances is also very important because by using the Vel’Phone we were able to decrease its rate from 8.6% (data of a 3-year period) to 3.1%. Using group calv¬ing pen instead of individual calving pen can significantly decrease the preva¬lence rate of dystocia, stillbirth, retained foetal membranes and injury of the soft birth canal. Assisted calving with inappropriately timed obstetrical assistance can also significantly negatively affect the prevalence rate of dystocia, stillbirth, retained foetal membranes and injury of the soft birth canal. Therefore, obstetrical assistants also play a very important role in the economy of a dairy farm
