Communication Skills in Veterinary Education in Comparison to Medical Communication Training
The question of this work is, in which elements of effective communication the medical profession is comparable with the veterinary counterpart. The view of similarities and distinction of the veterinarian-client relationship versus the physician-patient relationship answers this question, and proves furthermore, the importance of communication skill education in veterinary medicine
Embryo transfer- saving of genetic variety of the Hungarian draft horse
SUMMARY Background: Although embryo transfer (ET) is considered to be a routine procedure in sport horses, it is only rarely used in Hungary. This is mostly due to financial reasons, even though the value of a foal born from a carefully selected and matched dam and sire may exceed the costs of embryo transfer by far. Objectives: Embryo transfer has not been performed in the Hungarian coldblooded horse before. The aim of our work was to prove that embryo transfer can be performed successfully in the Hungarian cold-blooded horse also. Materials and Methods: We used semen from “5787, Karancslapújtő 96 Kondor”, a chestnut dapplestallion belonging to the Belgian 28 male line to inseminate “Vilma”, a valuable grey mare belonging to the Belgian 22 bloodline suffering from hoof cancer. Three recipient mares were available during the program. Embryo flushing was performed 8 days after insemination. The uterus was flushed in a closed environment using Dulbecco’s phosphate buffered saline with added glucose (1 g/l), sodium pyruvate and kanamycin (0,36 g). Non-surgical, transcervical uterine lavage was performed on the donor mare. The equineCH 34 French-type catheter was fixed with the balloon in the caudal part of the body of the uterus to avoid losing any fluid or an embryo. Gravity was used to administer and to collect the fluid: the flush medium container was placed high while the bag collecting the fluid was placed close to the ground. The valve was closed after introducing 1 litre of pre-warmed medium, the recovered medium then flowed through the Y tube and an embryo filter (70 μmM-confilter) into an empty infusion bag. This procedure was repeated 6 times. Results and Discussion: Pregnancy examination by ultrasound proved that the procedure was successful, recipient mare No. 1 is pregnant. A healthy foal was born on the 15th of April 2018. The success of our program proves that embryo transfer may play a major role in preserving genetic diversity in the Hungarian cold-blooded horse in the coming years
New research results on the bacterial communities of the digestive tract in domestic chickens
SUMMARY
From the results of metagenomic research studies, we are just beginning to understand the positive and negative effects of the microbiome on the host. Metagenomics is the study of genetic materials from environmental or host-associated microbiota to identify the microbial diversity and its functions. These new sequencing techniques aim at analysing not only the human microbiome, but also that of the most commercial animal species, including poultry. High-throughput sequencing technologies have facilitated studies of the microbiome complex by allowing more comprehensive identification of microbes than traditional culture methods. Poultry digestive tract has significant bacterial activity, which can be seen as a unique complex microbial ecosystem. Microbial com-munity in gastrointestinal tract (GIT) plays an important role in overall health and function of host, be it in human or animals. Newly developed sequencing platforms such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) have allowed the important researches into the diversity and functions of gut microbiota of various livestock animals. Beginning in the chicken crop, starch breakdown, and lactate fermentation are mediated by various Lactobacillus spp. at cell densities up to 109/g. Lactobacillialso dominate the proventriculus, and the gizzard. In the gizzard, where the majority of mechanical and chemical breakdown of feed is performed, the low pH of gastric juices containing hydrochloric acid and pepsin decrease the total number of cells below 108 /g. The small intestine harbours large (108–109 /g) bacterial populations dominated by Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and various Clostridiaceae. The most abundant groups in the chicken caeca were found to be Clostridiaceae, Bacteroidaceae, Lactobacillus and Proteobacteria.In our article, the latest research results on the gastrointestinal microbiome of the domestic chicken are reviewed
Investigation on the origin of degenerative muscle tissue lesions in an industrial broiler chicken flock
SUMMARY
Background: One of the major challenges in modern poultry industry is to pre-vent losses caused by coccidiosis. Ionophore antibiotics are widely used, despite that these compounds can have toxic side effects. Recently the possible sub-clinical effects of these chemicals gained increasing attention.Objectives: The authors examined a Hungarian industrial broiler flock, where degenerative muscle lesions arose. The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between feeding ionophore antibiotics and the evolvement of such lesions.Materials and Methods: The examined population had been divided into groups, where different, ionophore and herbal coccidiostats were administered. Routine diagnostic necropsies were performed weekly, muscle samples were examined with a semi-quantitative histopathological method.Results and discussion: The muscle degeneration had been observed equally in all groups, and the statistical analysis failed to detect significant negative effect of ionophore treatment versus the control group, so the causative cor-relation between ionophore treatment and muscle lesions have not been con-firmed
Torsion of the left lateral liver lobe in a Shagya Arabian mare - Case report
SUMMARY
Background: Liver lobe torsion is a very remarkable disorder in equine patients. It is diagnosed infrequently, as only eight cases have been reported so far in the literature. Its clinical signs are non-specific, definitive diagnosis is usually reached through exploratory laparotomy. The resection of the affected lobe via stapler device was successful in five cases. Materials and Methods: the aim of the current article is to report clinical his-tory and necropsy findings in a horse with torsion of the left lateral liver lobe, and also to review the characteristics of the mentioned condition.Results and Discussion:this case report presents a 9 years old, Shagya Ara-bian mare (6 months pregnant) with a history of inappetence, lethargy, mild colic signs, and tachycardia. At admission the horse showed signs of lethargy. Physi-cal evaluation revealed tachycardia (80 beats/min), tachypnoe (30 breaths/min.)and dirty red mucous membranes with petechial haemorrhages (CRT: 3 sec.). There was total absence of gut sounds. No reflux was obtained. Findings on rectal examination were within normal limits. The peritoneal fluid collected via abdominocentesis was grossly serosanguineous (WBC count: 10.53 G/l; total pro-tein: 34 g/l; lactate: 6.8 mmol/l). Blood haematological and biochemical analysis was performed. The PCV was moderately elevated (55.56%), thrombocytopenia (35 G/l), mild leucocytosis (13.07 G/l) with neutrophilia, decreased total protein (50 g/l) and critically elevated lactate concentration (13.1 mmol/l) was evident. Exploratory laparotomy was performed. The pre-operative treatment included intravenous fluid therapy and parenterally administered flunixin-meglumine (1.1mg/kg) and butorphanol (20 mg). The mare could not tolerate general anaesthe-sia and died soon after the surgical incision. Serosanguineous peritoneal fluid, petechial haemorrhages on the visceral and on the parietal peritoneum indicat-ing endotoxin shock was found post mortem. The necropsy revealed that the left lateral lobe of the liver was twisted. The twisted lobe was diffusely necrotic and congestion was also evident. No other possible causes of endotoxin shock could be revealed
