SUMMARY Background: In this paper the authors show the impact of African swine fever outbreaks on the management of the Hungarian hunting associations through case studies. African swine fever (ASF) was detected in wild boars in North-East Hungary in 2018. This situation has brought about significant changes in wild-life management in the affected areas. The game management is also severely affected by the restrictions and additional costs of the control measures, as well as the unfavourable changes of market conditions for wild boar meat. Objectives: The purpose of this research is to study the effects of African swine fever cases and the preventive and control measures on the management of hunting associations in Nógrád and Pest counties. Materials and Methods: The authors personally interviewed the managers of two hunting associations affected by the ASF control measures, one from Nógrád county and the other one from the north-eastern part of Pest county, considering their current game management practices and their plans. The pre-vailing market prices for wild boar meat in the ASF affected and high risk areas, and the low risk areas were also presented. The authors also collected the state compensation costs of the earlier classical swine fever (CSF) outbreaks between 2008 and 2011 in the north-eastern part of Pest county, and it can be stated that they are relatively comparable to the current ones being paid after ASF. Results and Discussion: The control measures against ASF and the state compensation play a significant role in the game management of hunting associations. The authorities can substantially help hunters to overcome the economic difficulties caused by ASF in the game management, thereby ensuring the effective participation of hunters in the eradication program. However, it can also be concluded that the hunting associations themselves can do a lot in their own interest by improving their current game management practices

Botanical examinations of veterinary background at the Department of Botany of University of Veterinary Medicine between 1954 and 2009: a retrospective summary

    Get PDF
SUMMARY Since the development of our botanical department (1954), hundreds of botanical analyses have been carried out on various feed samples (hay, silage, haylage, duck-bill and so-called “compact feeds”) and plant composition from autopsy (rumen, stomach, intestinal contents). Based on the remaining documents (which are obviously incomplete) the author summarized the botanical data, the characteristics and consequences of the compositions, as these data could help the veterinarians’ work. In the composition of the hay samples, were often found quality-reducing factors such as a very high proportion of sour-grasses (plant species from families Juncaceae, Cyperaceae, Sparganiaceae and Typhaceae) or too many worthless species of grasses (cockspur, foxtail, Bermuda grass etc.), partial or complete lack of fabaceous plants, or fungal infections. The main lesson of the silage, haylage samples is that the exact implementation of the production method is decisive, and the principle is true today, that good feed can be produced from plant material of good botanical composition. The author introduced the “compact” forages of the 1950s and 1960s. The high proportion of by-products of milling industry (rather waste) also meant many species of toxic weeds, i.e. they were unsuitable for regular feeding at the same time, causing many problems for consumers. In many cases, the botanical composition of animal samples provided important confirmation of the animal health problems that were then assumed. At other times, the sample did not contain any worrying plant constituent, so the examination had to go in a different direction. The above-mentioned lessons are still valid today, indicating that the plant parts (accumulated) in the animal’s body are causally related or may have emerging problems

SUMMARYBackground: Endocardiosis (or chronic valvular heart disease, CVHD) is the most common disease of the heart in dogs. Due to its frequent occurrence, the significance of this disease is large in pet veterinary practice. Objectives: we have been looking for answers to the questions relating to the endocardiosis of dogs. We aimed to find out at what stage this disease was typically determined and in what percentage of the cases we experience deterioration in the condition of the animal. Materials and methods: Using a retrospective data analysis, we examined a 7 years period and checked the data of 566 dogs suffering from endocardiosis (CVHD). In every dog echocardiogarphy was performed to determine the diagnosis of CVHD. Staging of the disease was based on the classification system of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart AssociationResults and discussion: we found that most of the patients (45.2%) only showed the subtlest lesions characteristic of the disease; these were the stage B1 patients. In the case of 193 individuals, during the period several heart ultra-sound examinations were performed as well. In 70% of these patients (135 indi-viduals) where multiple examinations had been carried out, we found that there had been no deterioration in the condition of the animal. Those dogs which were in B1 stage group at their first examination, have a 79% chance of not developing the signs of heart failure. The time of progress in every group was more than 1 year. Examining the stage deterioration, we found that age correlated signif-icantly negatively with the time between stage deterioration. This means that the endocardiosis in older dogs progress faster both from stage B1 into B2 and both from stage B2 into C. In 53 cases, we could follow the fate of the animals until they died. Out of these, death or euthanasia occurred because of heart disease in 28 cases, while the animals died or were put to sleep for other rea-sons in the remaining 25 cases. Comparing these two groups we found a high proportion of males (87%) among those who died of CVHD

A meticillin rezisztens Staphylococcus aureus kis arányú előfordulása a magyarországi lópopulációban – a törzsek részletes jellemzése

A meticillin rezisztens Staphylococcus aureus jelenleg is komoly kihívást jelent a lógyógyászatban.

A patacsont III-as típusú (sagittális) törése viszonylag ritkán előforduló töréstípus lovak esetében, ezért nagyon kevés publikáció található ebben a témában a szakirodalomban. A kísérletsorozat célja a corticalis húzócsavar behelyezés hatékonyságának és postoperatív komplikációinak vizsgálata és dokumentálása szedációban lévő, álló lovak esetében. A kísérlet során 9 sántaságmentes lovat vizsgáltunk. Behelyeztük a cortikális csavarokat az elülső végtagokon a patacsontokba 1 hét különbséggel. A műtétet megelőzően kívülről, a szarutokon markerekkel jelöltük a patacsont és a canalis solearis helyzetét röntgenes vizsgálat segítségével. A lovakat szedáció alatt, vezetéses érzéstelenítés mellett operáltuk. Röntgenkontroll mellett 4.5 mm-es húzócsavarokat helyeztünk be a megfúrt szarutokon keresztül a patacsontba.

Chronic Kidney Disease in Horses: Seven Clinical Case Reports

    No full text
The aim of this study was to review the current published data about chronic kidney disease (CKD) in horses and to describe seven clinical case reports of CKD referred to the Department and Clinic of Equine Medicine, University of Veterinary Medicine in Budapest between 2015 and 2017. The seven horses diagnosed with CKD are described in detail, and the findings are discussed in connection with previously reported cases. Seven horses ranging from 4 to 16 years of age (five geldings and two stallions) were admitted to the Department and Clinic of Equine Medicine, University of Veterinary Medicine, Budapest between 2015 and 2017. All seven horses had a history of weight loss of variable duration. Three of the horses had a history of partial or complete anorexia and two of these horses were also lethargic. Polyuria and polydipsia were present in one horse and exercise intolerance was a complaint in another. Mild ventral oedema was also present in one case. Hypoalbuminemia and severe proteinuria were also present in this horse which is consistent with nephrotic syndrome. The clinical signs observed in these cases are frequently reported in previous literature and chronic weight loss is the most common finding (Schott II, 2010b)

    Hepatitis E: A literature review
