Short-Term Outcome and Clinical Data Assessment of 21 Dogs undergoing Patent Ductus Arteriosus Ligation (2017-2019)
Background: Published data of incidence of reflex bradycardia (Branham sign) following
surgical closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is very limited.
Objective: Our goal was to find a correlation between clinical data of dogs undergoing PDA
ligation hypothesising that (1) younger dogs are less likely to suffer from reflex bradycardia
over the course of 10 minutes after complete ligation of PDA, and (2) younger dogs undergo
more pronounced left atrial remodelling after surgery.
Animals: Twenty-one referred dogs.
Materials and methods: Prospective analysis of clinical data of 21 referred cases with PDA.
Outcome was determined by contacting owners and referring veterinarians as well as
cardiologists performing the post-surgical echocardiography. All dog owners were asked to
do a control echocardiography four weeks post-surgery
A comprehensive review of the emergence of Schmallenberg virus in Europe and its re-emergence in Ireland and the UK
In recent decades vector-borne diseases have become increasingly prevalent as global
warming continues, allowing vectors to expand into previously unoccupied regions. Since
its emergence in Germany in 2011, Schmallenberg virus has spread throughout Europe.
Initially, the spread was extremely rapid with the virus being detected in most European
member countries one-year post-emergence.
Culicoides biting midges were discovered to be the putative, biological vector for SBV.
Transmission of the virus between countries was primarily attributed to the dispersal of
vectors as a result of climatic conditions i.e. wind direction. Although, the transfer of
viraemic animals may have also contributed to the spread. The prevalence of SBV can be
monitored efficiently by bulk tank milk sampling and UV-trapping of Culicoides biting
midges.
Schmallenberg virus mainly causes acute, febrile symptoms in adult cows. In foetuses, it
primarily manifests as Arthrogryposis-Hydranencephaly Syndrome (AHS), although some
animals may present as anatomically normal with neurological defects. Economic losses are
caused as a result of a drop in milk yield or of animals foregone due to foetal malformation

Behaviour analysis of the effect of fox pheromones on mice
In the current thesis we wanted to study the effect of synthetic TMT, similar to
the TMT found naturally in fox faeces, on fear response in mice. Several studies have
previously suggested them to have a good ability to induce fear in rodents, especially in
rats. We wanted to see if these studies were reliable anxiety stimulators, also in mice.
For the experiment we used five different odours: distilled water as a control,
citronella oil as a known neutral odour to rodents, TMT in 50% concentraion, TMT in
100% concentration, and also MetOH, which is a noisome odour without any specific
relevance to rodents. We wanted to evaluate the difference between using a high
concentration TMT versus using lower concentration TMT, as the high concentration one
may act as an irritating odour rather than a fear-responsive odour.
We placed the mice in an open-field box and exposed them to each odour for 5
minute intervals. After each odour they had resting days. We videotaped and used Noldus
Observer XT program to evaluate their behaviour

Technical difficulties in gonadal tissue removal of newly hatched chicken in gene preservation practice
SUMMARY
Background: Nowadays in avian species the only practically used preservation
method is semen freezing. However, female oocytes and embryos cannot be frozen
because of their biophysical properties. Therefore, an alternative method is needed,
to preserve female genetic material. Orthotopic transplantation of the ovary in dayold chicks can be a suitable technique for this purpose. In earlier studies turned
out, that not every genotype is suitable as a recipient. White Leghorn and Novogen
White proved to be appropriate recipient with Black Transylvanian Naked Neck, Hungarian Partridge colour and Hungarian Speckled chicken breeds as donors. Gonadal
tissue transplantation resulted 80% and 72% rates of adhesion applied native and
cryopreserved organs, respectively.
Objectives: Providing the adhesion it is necessary to make precise ovariectomy
in the recipient chicken. In case of the donor organ it is also important to remove
the ovary as completely as possible. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the
technique of ovariectomy, the difficulties of it and the related basic anatomical
knowledges.
Materials and Methods: The authors examined unhatched and dead chickens -
both females and males - under stereomicroscope. After cleansing the abdominal
area and making an incision on the skin, the yolk and the intestinal organs were
removed. Thus, the authors could get a better lookout to the genital organs, kidneys, adrenal gland and the vascular system of them. For the ovariectomy, thumb
forceps, microsurgery scissors and iris forceps are needed.
Results and Discussion: The ovary is located in a serous cavity formed by air sacs. In
day-old chicks, it is 3–4 mm long and triangular shaped. The cranial part of the ovary
is in proximity of the adrenal gland and the caudal part is near by the kidney. Regarding the vascular system, the organ is lying just under the caudal vena cava and common iliac vein, furthermore, is also close to abdominal aorta. This anatomical position
causes the difficulties of ovariectomy, because it is extremely hard to do completely
without damaging the vessels or the ovary itself. As result of the detailed anatomical
studies, removal of donor ovary of the exterminated chick could be done more precisely
right now, but further examinations are needed to create a perfect technique for the
removal or hinder the function of the recipient’s own gonad in a live bird
Prevalence of heart diseases and validation of normal echocardiographic parameters among Irish Wolfhounds in Hungary
SUMMARY
Objectives: Irish Wolfhounds are greatly affected by cardiac disorders -especially by dilated cardiomyopathy - all around the world. The aim of the study -was to assess the prevalence of cardiac disorders among Irish Wolfhounds in Hungary and to validate the normal echocardiographic parameters of this breed.Materials and Methods: Thorough cardiac examinations –including 6-leads electrocardiography and B- and M-mode echocardiography– were performed on 44 Irish Wolfhounds, representing about 10% of the Hungarian population of this breed. There were 22 males and 22 females, their weight ranged from 44 to 70 kg in age of 4 month to 9.5 years.Results and Discussion: 39 of the 44 examined Irish Wolfhounds were symptomless animals, without any signs of cardiac disease. There were 20 of 44 ani-mals (45.45%) with some form of heart disease, while 24 of 44 dogs (54.55%) had no detectable cardiac alterations. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) was diagnosed in 4 dogs (9.09%), mitral endocardosis and heartworm disease were found in one-one animal. Primary rhythm disturbances –without morphological alterations– were revealed in 14 dogs (31.81%). Electrocardiographic and echocardiographic measurements of the healthy individuals were similar to already pub-lished data. No association was found between the thyroid state and cardiac disorders in those 10 dogs, where T4-levels were also determined. The prevalence of cardiac alterations in this breed was similar to other countries’ results, however dilated cardiomyopathy was diagnosed less frequently

Mycoplasma iowae infection in a commercial turkey farm - Case report
SUMMARY
Background: M. iowae is a well-known pathogen in poultry industry. The main economic loss caused by this pathogen is the reduction of hatchability due to embryonic death. There are few reports that have associated M. iowae with stunting, poor feathering and leg abnormalities including chondrodystrophy in commercial turkey farms.Objectives: The aim of this report was presenting the pathological findings in a M. iowae infected commercial turkey farm and collecting data which influence the economic losses.Materials and methods: The authors dissected turkeys according to labora-tory standard method. During necropsy tissue samples were collected for his-tological examination. Bacteriological culturing was made from bone marrow, heart blood and liver. Faeces samples were examined by flotation technique. Faecal samples were also transferred to mycoplasma culture medium. The spe-cies level identification was carried out by real-time PCR. Results and discussion: After settling the day-old mortality was very high. The poults were stunted and exsiccated. Later bone deformities (mainly the abnormal development and torsion of tarsometatarsus), uneven growth and poor feathering can be observed at the end of the brooding period in the flock. The presence of M. iowae can be detected by the ninth day of brooding period (earlier it was not examined). The main economic losses were due to the day-old mortality and the uneven growth. The observed gross lesions were identical as described by other authors
