Fear reduction in dogs during the veterinary visit
This thesis examines the presence of fear in dogs during the veterinary visit, why this is an
issue, and how to improve it. Most dogs are experiencing some degree of fearfulness while
being at the veterinary clinic, and especially while being handled by the veterinarian.
Several methods have been proposed to reduce the fear experienced by the dogs, regarding
environment and ways of handling as well has prevention and treatment of veterinary
phobias. One of the proposed factors was acclimatisation, where dogs would have the time
to familiarise with the environment prior to being handled by the vet. In our experiment we
wanted to test this theory. The experiment included five dogs, none of which had any
extensive behaviour problems relating to the veterinary clinic already. All dogs were
examined on two different occasions, one time with the ability to investigate the
environment and the other time with no time for adaptation before the examination by a
veterinarian
Literature Review on Establishment of Japanese Black Cattle (Wagyu) and Future Prospects of Its Industry
A term “Wagyu” can be divided into two words “Wa” and “Gyu”; “Wa” indicates Japan or Japanese culture and “Gyu” means Cattle in Japanese. Wagyu literally means “Japanese cattle.” Wagyu consist of four breeds; Japanese Black, Japanese Brown, Japanese Shorthorn, and Japanese Polled. Today, Wagyu often referred to the Japanese Black cattle, which are known for their high marbling intramuscular fat content, because they contribute to more than 95% of the beef products in Japan. Essentially, certain cattle that fulfill requirements such as purebred, can only be labeled as Wagyu, but it is not necessary the same standard outside of Japan. This paper is a review of developmental history of the Japanese Black Cattle and their breeding methods over the past years, also discussion regarding to future prospect of their breeding technology and industry
A Literature Review Regarding The Epidemiology of Leptospirosis and its Impact on Cattle Herds in Ireland
Leptospirosis is a zoonotic spirochetal disease caused by the bacteria of genus Leptospirae.
Leptospirosis is the most common zoonosis worldwide and can have devastating impacts
on both animals and humans. It has a substantial influence on the farming industry via
agalctia and reproductive wastage in cows. Once thought to be primarily an occupational
disease of humans, recreational users are now thought to be in great risk of contacting the
disease. Leptospirosis caused by Leptospira Hardjo is an endemic disease in Irish cattle
herds and has been shown to affect both Irish suckler herds and dairy herds. Animals not
vaccinated are at risk of abortion and/or decreased rates of conception. There is limited
data available for the impact of Leptospirosis on Irish cattle herds and thus more research
is needed into its significance. This review aims to explain the potential impact of
Leptospirosis, the challenges facing its diagnosis and recommendations on preventing it
affecting cattle herds both nationally and globally
Comparison of two different DNA isolation methods in the detection of equine fetal cell-free DNA
Circulating equine cell free fetal DNA must be isolated and extracted in order to carry out further diagnostics such as equine fetal sex determination. This study compared two isolation methods, a more traditional Phenol-chloroform-isoamyl alcohol method with a ZYMO cfDNA Vacuum kit to conclude which protocol may obtain the highest concentration of ccffDNA whilst taking into consideration stage of gestation which must be optimised to ensure high yields

Inheritance of different cramping syndromes in canine
Cramping syndromes in canine covers a wide area of topics.
The aim of this literature review is to get a broader understanding of the inheritance of syndromes causing cramps in the domestic dog (canis familiaris). 4 different paroxysmal dyskinesias was assessed further, and one hypomyelinating disease causing cramps. The common denominator between the latter and one of the paroxysmal dyskinesias was the breed Border Terrier. The diagnostic workup and the mode of inheritance was collected, and the possibility for diagnosing these cramping syndromes with genetic tests
The Genetic and Clinical aspects of Common Canine Retinopathies, Progressive Retinal Atrophy
PRA is an autosomal inherited condition that causes deterioration of the retina affecting
photoreceptor cells the extent of retinal involvement and time of onset in dogs determines
the degree of vision impairment. The aim of my thesis was to give a comparative literature
review of common canine retinopathies, in particular Progressive Retinal Atrophy today.
I focused on genetic testing, screening, the different forms of the disease, how it presents in
different breeds, the prevalence of the disease today and new methods and studies to help
find a treatment
A survey to monitor oestrus detection in Norwegian cattle farms
This thesis was based on a questionnaire sent out where 42 farmers replied. It summarizes how to succeed in the herd when it comes to oestrus expression and detection, when the fertility in the bovine population is declining all over the world
A kisállattartók állattartási és állategészségügyi információszerzési szokásai
Az Állatorvostudományi Egyetem Állattenyésztési, Takarmányozástani és
Laborállat-tudományi Tanszékén írt diplomamunkám célja felmérni a magyar kutya- és
macskatartók információszerzési szokásait állataik tartásával és egészségével kapcsolatban.
Munkám során elsősorban azt vizsgáltam, hogy mely információs forrásokat részesítik
előnyben a gazdák, melyeket használják gyakrabban és melyekben bíznak meg jobban,
valamint, hogy hol állnak az állatorvosok ebben a sorban? Milyen okok merülhetnek fel,
amely miatt esetleg internetes forrásokhoz fordulnak a gazdák az állatorvosok helyett és
milyen szerepet játszik az állatorvosi kommunikáció mindebben? Célom volt felmérni az
állattartók általános hozzáállását az állatorvosi ellátáshoz és összehasonlítani az
eredményeimet a nemzetközi szakirodalommal.
A vizsgálatot egy 29 kérdésből álló anonim kérdőív segítségével készítettem el,
melyet az interneten, első sorban állattartással kapcsolatos Facebook csoportokban osztottam
meg. A kutatást a kérdőívre érkezett 1228 db kiértékelhető válasz alapján készítettem el. A
diplomamunka eredményei a kutatásban résztvevők szociodemográfiai körülhatároltsága
miatt csak információszerzésre alkalmasak, messzemenő következtetések levonására nem.
Általános állattartói véleményt mutat, támpontot ahhoz, hogy a jövőben mely területeket
érdemes tovább vizsgálni
The epidemiological features of African swine fever and the possibilities of prevention
SUMMARY
The first African swine fever (ASF) cases outside Africa were diagnosed in Portugal in 1957. Since 2017 the African swine fever virus (ASFV) has been continuously spreading in Eastern Europe, then it arrived to Asia, and by now it became the biggest economic and animal health threat to the swine industry of the world. In Europe both the wild boar and domestic pig populations are affected by the disease. ASFV is very resistant against environmental and physical effects and it may remain infectious in carcasses for months. This resistance largely con-tributes to the fact that ASFV infection can be sustained for a prolonged time even in low density wild boar populations. Depending on the infectious route, the virulence of the strain and the quantity of the acting virus, the course and symptoms of the disease can vary significantly. Peracute, acute, subacute and chronic forms of the disease can be distinguished. So far a few genes were shown to have an impact on the virulence of the virus, including the members of two multigene families (MGF 360 and MGF 505), and the genes DP71L, DP96R and DB69R (UK). Vaccine developments based on classical attenuation and virus inactivation methods failed to produce safe and effective vaccines against ASFV. Based on the available data, it seems that the development of live attenuated vaccines by targeted mutagenesis can bring a breakthrough in vaccine develop-ment, however, there are still a lot of problems to be solved. Vaccine research is hampered by the lack of established continuous cell lines in which ASFV can be propagated in high titer without genetic changes. A great variety of immuno-logical and DNA based tests can be applied to diagnose ASFV, however, the use of PCR and immunoperoxidase staining are the most reliable methods used in practice. Since currently there is no available vaccine, the most effective defen-sive measures against the virus are the implementation of rigorous biosafety and biosecurity standards on the pig farms to prevent viral infection of the livestock
