Design of Normal Mode Helical Antenna for Seawater Application
To overcome the substantial propagation loss in the ocean, a low frequency band should be chosen when contemplating radio wave communication. Then, the antenna used at the portable radio equipment should be very small compare to the wavelength. For the miniaturized antenna, the normal mode helical antenna (NMHA) is suitable because of achieving high efficiency. In this paper, design method of NMHA in the seawater condition (r=81, =4) is explained. The frequency bands of 100MHz and 15MHz are selected. The self-resonant structures are determined based on the theoretical equation. Electrical characteristics such as resonant frequency, input impedance, VWSR and antenna efficiency are obtained through simulation by FEKO simulator. Electromagnetic simulation model is formed by taking into account the practical experimental condition. At 100MHz and 15MHz, resonances are ensured for antenna diameter lengths of 6.83 cm and 12.2 cm respectively. Input resistance of 27.15 and 94.14, antenna efficiencies of -14.88dB and -26.27dB are achieved at 100MHz and 15MHz respectively
Static Shear Strength of Single-Lap Joint Using Eggshell-Toughened Epoxy as Adhesive Agent
Eggshells are daily food waste in every household and are disposed of in landfills, producing environmental issues, and their decomposition has generated an unpleasant odour. Eggshell powder is made of finely crushed particles and is suitably applied as a filler in thermoset polymers such as epoxy resin to improve their mechanical properties. The shear strength of toughened epoxy with eggshell powder (TEEP) is studied. Single-lap joint (SLJ) shear tests were conducted to investigate the shear strength of the SLJ bonded with different volume fractions of TEEP. For this purpose, the eggshells were dried and crushed into particles of size 150?m. The volume fraction of eggshell powder in the epoxy resin is 0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10% by volume. The epoxy resin system was made of EPIKOTE Resin 828 and Hardener 651 with a mixing ratio of 5:2 by volume. The results show that the ultimate joint strength greatly depended upon overlap length and filler volume fractions. The improvement was up to 72.7% and 39.9%, with the longest overlap length and 10% TEEP fraction. Hence, an overlap length of 38.1 mm and a 5% eggshell volume fraction gave the ultimate optimum strength of 5.045 kN
Estimating Dynamic and Flow Characteristics of Electromagnetic Dispenser for The Kraz Truck Converted to Gas
The problems of worldwide environmental degradation, global warming, scarcity of fossil fuels have caused the replacement of ICE vehicles with electric ones. For the countries with underdeveloped economy, it is important to find more affordable ways to solve this problem. One of them is to convert the cars with ICE into more environmentally friendly and economical ones, such as gas-powered cars. Yet, the conversion of diesel cars usually results in power loss. The work of the electromagnetic gas dispenser (EGD) of the engine power supply system significantly affects the efficiency of the gas engine. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the dynamic and flow characteristics of the EGD of the KrAZ truck (Ukraine) converted to gas, and to provide recommendations for improving the efficiency of its operation. The object of the research was the working processes of the EGD power supply system of 6ChGN13/14 engine, converted from diesel engine and equipped with a gas turbine supercharger. The paper presents the results of experimental studies on determining the effect of operating voltage on the dynamic characteristics of EGD. The dependences of dynamic and flow characteristics of the EGD on the change of the control signal frequency and the dependence of efficiency through the EGD flow nozzle on the control signal duration were obtained; the effect of the return spring stiffness on the dynamic and flow characteristics of the EGD were determined. The results of the work are designed to increase the efficiency of diesel trucks converted to gas
Ultrasonic Velocity Profiler for the Measurement of a Bubbly Flow Velocity Vector in Small Channels
The multi-dimensional velocity distribution of coolant in bubbly flow within the fuel rod bundles of the reactor core in boiling water reactors (BWRs) is elucidated by experimental investigation in this study. Since a measurement technique is required for such an investigation, this paper proposes the development of an ultrasonic velocity profiler (UVP). The combination of special ultrasonic transducers and modified signal processing on the UVP is proposed to obtain a multi-dimensional velocity vector of the bubbles and liquid in bubbly flow. The ability of the proposed technique is demonstrated by performing an experiment in swirling bubbly flow and its applicability confirmed by comparing the results with another technique. The sound pressure distribution in the narrow channel of the rod bundle is then measured prior to the verification of the ultrasonic wave emitted through a small channel. The echo signal reflected from reflectors dispersed in the liquid, bubble, and tracer particles in the small channel of the rod bundle indicates that the proposed UVP can be applied in this application with a low level of multi-reflection. Finally, the UVP system is demonstrated to measure the velocity vector of bubbly flow in the narrow flow channel on the rod bundle, and the velocity vector of the bubble and liquid obtained simultaneously

Optimizing Mist-Based Ablution: A Comprehensive Study of Water Distribution and Conservation Using Watercolour Visualization and Thermal Imaging Techniques
Conducting ablution constitutes a prerequisite for Muslims prior to engaging in prayer. This ritualistic practice involves the cleansing and wiping of specific body parts, including the hands, face, arms up to the elbows, head, and feet. Ensuring comprehensive water coverage of the aforementioned areas is a crucial criterion during ablution. However, excessive water consumption often occurs when Muslims perform ablution to achieve full coverage. Consequently, a more ecologically sustainable approach to ablution is necessary to minimize water wastage. A proposed water mist spray device aims to optimize water usage while adhering to the Islamic jurisprudence requirements of complete water coverage on ablution parts. To assess water coverage using the mist spray, an evenness distribution profile is employed through atomized mist colorization on paper and thermal imaging of ablution parts. An appropriate spray nozzle is chosen based on an analysis of spray distribution and coverage patterns on the target surface, utilizing image processing techniques. The proposed methodology involves mixing water with red watercolour and manually pumping it through the selected nozzle using an off-the-shelf water sprayer, thereby atomizing the coloured water to stain white paper. Subsequently, the paper is converted into a digital image and analysed using ImageJ software to determine the mist spray coverage percentage, spatial spread at various distances, and the extraction of stain and droplet sizes. This technique is applied to different types and sizes of spray nozzles to identify the most suitable nozzle for the prototype. The findings demonstrate that nozzles with smaller exit holes and higher water pressure yield more extensive spray coverage on the target surface. Upon selecting the appropriate nozzle, a Portable Ablution Mist Spray Device prototype is employed to evaluate water coverage for the ablution body parts. Thermal images of the ablution parts are captured before and after the ritual, with the temperature differences being analysed. The thermal images reveal a comprehensive and uniform spray distribution on the ablution body parts, accompanied by a temperature difference ranging from 0.9°C to 3.8°C among various participants
A Fuzzy Logic-Based Tuning Model in an Indoor Lighting System for Energy and Visual Comfort Management
This paper proposes a fuzzy logic-based tuning model (FLTM) for daylight-linked control of the lighting system in an office room. The proposed FLTM considered a new method of dimming levels of light-emitting diode (LED) luminaires updating process to improve the performance of the developed fuzzy logic controller (FLC) in terms of energy consumption and visual comfort metric and, at the same time, fully complies with the European Standard EN 12464-1. The artificial lighting system and daylight simulation were carried out using DIALux to model artificial lighting and daylight illuminance levels matrices. The proposed FLTM was developed and simulated using MATLAB and validated and compared with other controllers, including developed FLC and artificial neural network (ANN) based control. The simulation results showed that the proposed FLTM successfully improved the performance of developed FLC in terms of a fully satisfied visual comfort set-point. It also attained higher energy savings of 2% than ANN and achieved the closest to preset visual comfort compared with other controllers. Moreover, the proposed method consumes less computational effort, and it is easy to integrate with developed FLC and daylight-linked control of the lighting system
Investigation of Insulator Performance Under Artificial Contaminants
There are three types of insulators, namely glass, ceramic, and polymer. Although polymers have hydrophobic properties that make them superior to other materials. However, in its application, ceramic and glass insulators are still used because they are cheaper. Environmental conditions around the work location of the insulator greatly affect its performance. Areas with high levels of pollution will result in the insulator being damaged quickly. The effect of seawater and fly-ash contaminants on the three types of insulators is discussed in this study. Experimental approaches and FEM-based simulations have been carried out. Pollution levels in seawater contaminants were standardized using ESDD. Meanwhile, the level of pollution in fly-ash contaminants is standardized using NSDD. Simulations and experiments were carried out at four levels of contamination, namely light, medium, heavy and very heavy. Then the simulation and test results are compared. The greater the ESDD and NSDD values, the greater the leakage current
A Numerical Study of Brace-Viscous Damper System of Fixed Offshore Jacket Platforms Under Extreme Environmental Loads
The Persian Gulf is one of the most common regions where offshore platforms exist due to the presence of oil and natural gas. Wind, current, and wave loading affect the dynamic response of offshore structures, increasing performance uncertainty and catastrophic failure probability. Thus, this study investigates energy dissipation systems, particularly viscous dampers, to solve design and rehabilitation problems of fixed offshore structures. Viscos dampers improve vibrational behaviour and reduce structural response to optimise platform performance. Thus, eliminating costly structural repairs and strengthening components under extreme environmental loads extends structure lifetime. Thus, different viscous damper system configurations are tested to reduce dynamic response under extreme environmental loads in the Persian Gulf. Diagonal and inverted V-shaped brace viscous dampers with nine different arrangements are compared to find the best configuration. The study found that the brace viscous dampers with only three applied dampers at the top three levels are most efficient at mitigating dynamic response. It reduced displacements from level 1 to level 5 by 52% to 64% and connection stresses by 38% to 54%. Finally, viscous dampers reduce structural vibration and provide uniform and constant structural dynamic response, so the oil and gas industry should use them for offshore structure design and rehabilitation
Parametric Study for Runner Modifications of Die Casted Part with Venting Systems
High-pressure die casting (HPDC) is a process used for creating complex components by injecting the molten metal inside the cavity at high pressure. Failure in die casting may reduce product mechanical properties, surface quality, and life cycle. In this paper, the die-casting process of an inspection instrument – test piece is investigated for parametric study and Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Parameters used in the die-casting process are important since it affects the molten flow quality inside the cavity. Thus, a parametric study is done to investigate the optimum parameter use in the die-casting process of the test piece. Runner gating system design is also one of the important criteria to maintain the quality of products. This paper also investigated the effect of runner gating system design optimization in reducing gas porosity. The CT scan of the sample mold is included to compare the relationships between gas porosity occurrence with CFD results. This paper proposed a new runner design named outward curvature runner with an air vent that can improve velocity and temperature distributions in reducing die-casting defects. In addition to that, air vents are installed to extend the volume and promote higher suction, to eliminate gas bubbles entrapment inside the cavity
