A STUDY OF ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND THE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS AMONG DRIVERS ON THE YANGON-MANDALAY EXPRESSWAY
This study explores the causes and trends of road traffic accidents (RTAs) on the Yangon–Mandalay Expressway over a decade (2015–2024), with the aim of identifying the most significant human and mechanical factors behind them. Using a quantitative research method, it analyzes official accident records through descriptive and inferential statistics such as correlation and regression models via SPSS to uncover meaningful patterns and predictors of accident occurrence and severity. Findings highlight human error as the dominant factor, accounting for over 75% of all accidents, driven largely by over-speeding, reckless maneuvers, and fatigue. Tire failures and mechanical disorders also contribute considerably, reflecting weak vehicle inspection systems. Seasonal spikes in accidents, especially between April and June, further reveal how travel volume and adverse weather intensify risks. Enforcement limitations, infrastructure deficits, and low public awareness amplify these challenges. Based on these insights, the study recommends a multi-layered strategy: enhancing speed control using AI-driven surveillance; instituting mandatory driver education with a focus on
fatigue and expressway safety; standardizing nationwide vehicle inspections; and upgrading signage, road surfaces, and emergency response protocols. These interventions are vital to reducing accident rates, protecting lives, and ensuring safer, more efficient mobility on Myanmar’s busiest highway
