ESD-Based Green Chemistry Teaching Materials in High School to Support Sustainability
understand environmental issues and play a role in supporting sustainability. Although the concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has often been applied in many fields, its application, specifically in green chemistry teaching materials in high school, still receives less attention. Previous studies focus more on the concept of green chemistry in general, so there is still a void in the development of teaching materials specifically designed to support sustainability goals. This study reviews and analyzes various literatures on the development of ESD-based green chemistry teaching materials in high school, evaluating their impact on students’ environmental understanding and critical thinking skills. The method used is Systematic Literature Review (SLR), by reviewing research that has been published between 2018 and 2024. Relevant literature was identified from the Google scholar academic journal database to get a comprehensive view of the implementation of this teaching material. The results of the study show that ESD-based green chemistry teaching materials can increase students’ awareness of environmental issues, encourage them to take concrete actions that support sustainability, and hone their critical thinking skills in understanding the environmental impacts of various chemical processes. Nevertheless, there are challenges in its implementation, such as limited resources for teachers and the need for further training so that teachers are ready to implement this teaching material properly. Overall, this study concludes that ESD-based green chemistry teaching materials have great potential in supporting sustainable learning in high schools. However, further development and stronger support for teacher training and the provision of adequate resources are needed
Optimizing Social Capital in Coastal Areas: Building Collective Memory of Semarang
Geographical, environmental, economic, and historical collectively contribute to Semarang’s unique appeal. As a coastal city, Semarang’s identity is deeply rooted in the historical, cultural, and communal legacies that have evolved over time. The integration of natural landscapes, heritage sites, and community traditions in the “Old City” area, located near the coast, has positioned it as a symbolic representation of Semarang as a waterfront city. This region is linked to the main road that runs along the coastline, emphasizing its coastal character. Reconstructing a collective memory of Semarang as a waterfront city in the 21st century poses significant challenges, necessitating innovative strategies and continuous efforts. An integrative approach to coastal development is crucial, transforming the area into a unique, economically valuable tourist destination by utilizing its historical, cultural, natural, and community assets. These elements serve as powerful social capital in shaping a prosperous future and restoring Semarang’s waterfront and maritime identity, even if they have to face various challenges and obstacles. This study aims to identify a model for integrative coastal area development that emphasizes the involvement and welfare of the local community. Identifying the characteristics and potential of local communities is essential in developing costal tourism destinations. Developing heritage-based coastal tourism, rooted in culture and local wisdom while remaining adaptive to globalization, is crucial to embedding Semarang’s legacy as a waterfront city into public consciousness
Lights, Camera, Write! Exploring the Power of Reels in Project-based Learning for Improving Story Writing Skills
Writing skills are a fundamental competency for elementary school students, as they support the development of literacy and critical thinking abilities. This study aims to examine the effect of a project-based learning model supported by video reels media on improving the narrative writing skills of fourth-grade students. The research method employed is a pre-experimental design with pre- and post-intervention assessments. The subjects of this study were 19 fourth-grade students from an elementary school in Bandung Regency. The instrument used was a narrative writing rubric, which assessed aspects such as story structure, creativity, language use, and cohesion between story sections. The data were analyzed quantitatively using both descriptive and inferential statistics, with hypothesis testing to examine differences.The results show a significant improvement across all assessed aspects, with the highest gains observed in creativity and story structure. This study implies that the use of PBL supported by video reels media is effective in enhancing students’ writing skills, particularly in creativity and story organization, and contributes to the development of more engaging and creative writing teaching methods in elementary schools
Write Your Way to Success: Exploring Canva’s Role in Problem-based Learning for Better Report Writing
The ability to write observation report texts is an essential skill that students need to systematically and clearly document their findings. This study aims to examine the implementation of the problem-based learning (PBL) model assisted by Canva in improving high school students’ ability to write observation reports. The research method used is a pre-experimental design with a single experimental group, involving 35 tenth-grade students from a high school in Bandung Regency, selected through convenience sampling. The research instrument was a scoring rubric developed through expert and empirical validation. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative analysis by comparing pre-test and post-test scores. The results show a significant improvement in the ability to write observation reports after the implemesntation of the PBL model assisted by Canva, as evidenced by the increase in average post-test scores. These findings imply that PBL assisted by Canva can be an effective method for enhancing students’ report writing skills and provides an opportunity to integrate technology into writing instruction in schools
Objective Conditions of Indonesian Language Learning in Improving Reading Comprehension and Writing Skills in Elementary Schools
This study aims to analyze the objective conditions of Indonesian language learning in improving reading comprehension and writing skills in elementary schools. The research method used is a case study with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis in five elementary. The results indicate that the Indonesian language learning process faces challenges in the form of a lack of variation in teaching methods and limited use of learning media. However, the use of a literacy-based approach and the provision of structured exercises can support the improvement of students’ reading comprehension and writing simple sentences skills. This study suggests the need to develop more contextual, innovative learning strategies to improve the quality of Indonesian language learning
Analysis of Literacy Problem Solving for Students in Inclusive Schools Through the Project Citizen Learning Model
This research was motivated by students’ low level of, proven by the fact that students rarely visit the school library and they prefer holding cellphones rather than books every day. They access the internet and watch videos on social media than reading and analyzing news or information related to their needs. This research uses qualitative research with in-depth descriptive analysis and is supported by the results of survey data filled in by students from two inclusive schools (SMKN 3 Probolinggo and SMKN 2 Malang, East Java). The research results show that the application of the project can be a solution to the civic literacy problem of students. The project citizen learning model is able to strengthen civic literacy by focuses on students’ understanding of good and correct information, public policies and governmental processes, and their rights and obligations as local citizens and citizens of the world
Bacterial Profile, Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns, and Associated Factors in Wound Infection Patients at Wad Medani, Sudan: A Four-year, Laboratory-based, Retrospective, Cross-sectional Study
Background: Wound infections increase the risk of disarticulation and amputation and have significant economic repercussions. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the bacterial profiles of wound infections, patterns of antibiotic resistance, and associated factors.
Methods: This was a laboratory-based, retrospective, cross-sectional study. The study included all wound specimens for culture and drug sensitivity that were routinely obtained for diagnostic purposes at the Pathology Center for Diagnosis and Research (PCDR), University of Gezira, Sudan, from January 1, 2020, to October 15, 2023. Data were manually collected from the registries (a paper-based record) of the PCDR. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 27.0.
Results: Overall, 642 wound specimens were investigated, with 450 (70.1%) cultures positive for bacterial growth. A total of 230 (51.1%) male patients had positive wound cultures. Among those with positive growth, 291(64.7%) were gram-negative bacteria (GNB) (95% CI; P-value 0.332). The most commonly isolated bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus 147 (32.7%) and Escherichia coli 145 (32.2%). Vancomycin 93.3% (43/45) and linezolid 83.7% (82/98) were the drugs most susceptible to gram-positive bacteria (GPB), while amikacin 88.7% (228/257) and gentamicin 70.6% (108/153) were the most susceptible to GNB. Univariate logistic regression revealed that only age (95% CI; P-value 0.004) had a statistical association with wound culture growth.
Conclusion: This study reported a high rate of bacterial growth. The most frequently isolated bacteria were S. aureus and E. coli. The drugs that showed the highest susceptibility to GPB were vancomycin and linezolid, while amikacin and gentamicin were the most effective against GNB. Age had a statistically significant association with wound culture growth. The high resistance rate of isolated bacteria, particularly GNB, necessitates immediate and significant modifications to their antimicrobial prescription policy for safe, rational, and effective antimicrobial administration. Additionally, antimicrobial agents should be used based on the susceptibility of specific microorganisms
Endometrial compaction can improve assisted reproductive technology outcomes in frozen-thawed embryo transfer cycles using hormone replacement therapy: A cross-sectional study
Background: Endometrial compaction (EC) is an ultrasound evaluation method that may predict assisted reproductive technology outcomes. Objective: This study aimed to assess the impact of EC on assisted reproductive technology outcomes in frozen embryo transfer cycles with hormone replacement therapy.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 100 women who underwent first or second frozen embryo transfer cycle at Yazd Reproductive Sciences Institute, Yazd, Iran from June to October 2024 were included. Endometrial thickness was compared between the day of starting progesterone and embryo transfer day. Then participants were divided into 2 groups, no compaction and compaction group. Biochemical, clinical, and ongoing pregnancy rates (OPR) were assessed between the 2 groups.
Results: Statistically significant differences were observed in biochemical, clinical, and OPR between the compaction and no compaction groups. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated significantly higher pregnancy rates in EC 10–15% and > 15%. We found a significant influence of EC 10–15% (p = 0.02, p = 0.01, p = 0.01), and EC > 15% (p = 0.002, p = 0.001, and p = 0.002) on biochemical, clinical, and OPR, respectively.
Conclusion: EC after progesterone administration in hormone replacement therapy-frozen embryo transfer cycles can increase biochemical, clinical, and OPR. The percentage of EC changes also influence the outcomes of these cycles
Assessment of addiction behavior and spermatogenesis in glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor-treated cannabis-addicted rats: An experimental study
Background: Cannabis addiction poses risks to male fertility by lowering levels of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), which is vital for spermatogenesis. Objective: This research aimed to determine if the injection of exogenous GDNF into the brain of cannabis-addicted rats has a positive impact on their behavior and spermatogenesis.
Materials and Methods: This study involved 15 male Wistar rats divided into 3 equal groups: control, model, and experimental. Cannabis addiction was induced in the model and experimental groups using a smoking machine with a 0.25 gr dose per 5 rats, and the experimental group received a 0.5 mg GDNF treatment via stereotaxic injection. Behavioral changes were assessed through plus maze, open field, and sucrose preference tests before and after treatments. Sperm parameters were evaluated with H&E staining, sperm morphology with Diff-Quik staining, DNA damage and viability with acridine orange and trypan blue staining.
Results: Addicted rats displayed increased anxiety, which was improved by GDNF treatment (p < 0.05). Although cannabis significantly reduced germ cells and the size of the testis and epididymis compared to controls (p = 0.0006, p = 0.003), GDNF had a limited effect on these aspects. Cannabis significantly altered sperm morphology (p = 0.0016), but GDNF reversed abnormal sperms. GDNF improves sperm quality, reverses cannabis-induced sperm grading alterations (grade C, p = 0.0295), reduces DNA damage significantly (p = 0.0242), and enhances sperm viability, highlighting its potential to counteract some of cannabis’s harmful effects on male reproductive health.
Conclusion: The findings of this experiment suggest that exogenous GDNF could be a potential therapeutic agent for cannabis addiction and sperm parameters
Evaluation of laparoscopic surgery effects on pain severity and quality of life in different subtypes of endometriosis: A follow-up study
Background: Studies have shown that endometriosis significantly has a negative impact on women’s mental health and quality of life (QoL), resulting in these participants experiencing a diminished QoL.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of laparoscopic surgery on the severity of pain and the QoL of women with different types of endometriosis.
Materials and Methods: In this follow-up study 50 women with endometriosis, who underwent laparoscopic surgery, who met a high visual analog score (> 6) with impaired QoL, lack of response to analgesics, infertility with pain unresponsive to assisted reproductive therapy, and involvement of other organs such as the bowel or ureter at the Amir Al Momenin hospital, Zabol, Iran, from August 2022 to January 2023 were enrolled. The participants were categorized into 2 groups: those with stage IV endometriosis and those with lower stages (I-III). Groups according to the higher occurrence of grade 4 endometriosis, as 55.1% were affected by it. The pain score was measured using the visual analog score, and the participants’ QoL score was measured using the endometriosis health profile questionnaire.
Results: The mean age of participants was 32 yr, with a standard deviation of 8.6 yr. Participants were divided into 2 groups: those with grade 4 endometriosis (55.1%) and those with a grade lower than 4, as classified by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Over 12 months, both groups experienced a significant decrease in pain severity and QoL scores (p < 0.0001). However, the changes in pain and QoL scores between the 2 groups were not statistically significant (p = 0.520 and p = 0.984, respectively).
Conclusion: Laparoscopic treatment can reduce pain and QoL scores (increase the QoL indices) in women with endometriosis, regardless of the disease’s severity
