Designing a Cross-cultural Picture Book: A Glance at Legenda La Salaga
No full textMany aspects of Indonesian traditional culture may serve as a valuable source of inspiration in the creative industries. The picture book Legenda La Salaga (2021) is one recent example retelling a Mandar legend from West Sulawesi. Uniquely, the Mandar story is illustrated using traditional Balinese kamasan painting style, a deliberate choice by the book’s authors to highlight the archipelago’s multicultural society. This paper aims to describe some of the book’s visual elements and design processes that supported the book’s aim. This is done through a qualitative and explanatory approach using empirical observations of the finished product complemented by experiences of the book’s designers. The book designers built each scene into a spread with modified painting scenes on one page and trilingual text on the opposing page. In the painting scenes, digital modifications were applied to accommodate the difference in medium while still preserving essential Balinese traits such as aun-aun. In terms of typography, application of Lontara’ script text balances Mandar-Balinese visual elements and introduces the general reader with this often-neglected aspect of Sulawesi culture. Legenda La Salaga shows that considerations to cross-cultural aspects were present in every stage of the design production and applied by all collaborators.

Stylization of Batara Kala's Face as a Geometric Ornament Form
No full textThe problem researchers to discuss in the object of this research is how the meaning and elements of visual form in the stylization of Batara Kala’s facial decoration objects in temple ornaments are viewed from the visual aesthetics. Findings assume that there are visual elements of personification of living creatures that are stylized into the form of facial objects. This research aims to determine the meaning of form in visual stylistic elements as the face of the Batara Kala figure on temple ornamental objects as of Buto Kala. The focus of the object material is using perspective analysis of the visual aesthetics form with a comparative interpretive paradigm. Using comparative object studies of the two faces of Batara Kala, research methods using qualitative, descriptive data with a visual aesthetic theory approach and semiotic analysis. Symbols, and signs to the meaning behind the face shape of the Batara Kala character in classical temple ornaments in Central Java and East Java are a form of stylization as a personification of the facial shape of other creatures with dominant elements of geometric shapes and decorative motif on Batara Kala’s face on the temple decoration. Research on the figure of the face Batara Kala on temple gate ornaments, has artistic ranging from elements of lines, planes, geometric shapes, and textures in the form of visual aesthetic style stylization. The urgency of this research is to determine the form of elements of geometric stylization as a form of creativity in forming ornaments on antagonistic facial Batara kala using stylization style.

Characteristics of Dutch Colonial Architecture in Public Buildings of Tegal, Central Java
No full textTegal is a city which is located on the coast of Java, it has grown exponentially in various sectors, including that of the domination of Dutch Colonial architecture. Tegal’s legacy is that it houses various public buildings that served as National Government offices for the Dutch during the colonial era. As a result of this, many public buildings in Tegal are shaped in the Dutch Colonial architectural style. During this era of colonialism, colonial architecture served as a symbol of an architectural identity for the city. The city of Tegal houses several public and government buildings with the colonial architectural style, such as the Birao Building, the Mako Lanal Building, the Tegal DPRD Building, and the Post Office Building. Culturally, Tegal’s architecture connects the city’s colonialist past with the local traditions. Furthermore, the existence of colonialist structures serves as proof of the city’s historical identity. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research method, as well as further examination of the characteristics of buildings in Tegal that fit the colonial archetype. According to the findings of this research, all four of the buildings explored in this study exhibit characteristics befitting of the Dutch Colonial architectural style.

Analysis of Opening Positions, Layout Arrangements, Wind Movement Within Middle Class Urban Resident in East Java
No full textGlobal warming has impacted many regions and sectors around the world, including Indonesia. Unfortunately, Indonesia happens to be the third largest emitter of carbon in the world according to several reports, such as the NDC 2016 report, the 2019 Carbon Brief, and the 2020 UNEP Emission Gap Report. This has resulted in extreme weather in Indonesia such as longer monsoon seasons in Sumatra and Borneo temperatures in the regions of Java and Nusa Tenggara. There have been infrastructural developments made which aim to reduce the adverse effects caused by climate change, namely through studies and the redesigning of residential properties. The main purpose of designing these homes is to acclimate properly against these challenges. This is done in the form of thermal regulation by utilizing the surrounding environmental elements, such as ventilation, to achieve optimal thermal comfort as per the Air Circulation Hour process. Proper air circulation could provide comfort and boost the skin’s evaporation process to provide cooler temperatures for the building’s occupants. Exploration of Raw Eggs' Packaging in Corrugated Paper Material
No full textEggs are a source of animal protein which is the choice of Indonesian people. Nutritious, easy to process, and the price is much cheaper than other sources of animal protein, making eggs a commodity that is always sought after and needed. Compared to the type of eggs from other poultry, the types of eggs commonly consumed by the public are chicken eggs. The distribution of raw chicken egg products starts from breeders, distributors, to retailers. This distribution chain triggers possible damage to the eggs. Common damage is cracked eggs broken. This damage will certainly affect the profits of those who offer this egg product. These explorations aim to study the basic packaging structure to ensure the safety of the eggs packed. The exploration results and concepts can be applied in designing egg packaging or any other fragile items that are packaged in corrugated paper-based packaging.

Conceptual Photography in Therapeutic Photography
No full textConceptual photography frees photographers to be creative according to their intent and purpose with various concepts and techniques. Therapeutic photography can provide a unique meaning to conceptual photography. The mode used in this research is qualitative, with a phenomenological method. Design methods using design thinking and external approaches such as photo elicitation, photo reflexive, and photo novella. The results obtained by two research respondents through the design thinking process can provide a therapeutic effect even though they tend to display beautiful visuals, and not seem gloomy, sad, or spooky. In conclusion, Cristina Nunez, an expert on therapeutic photography, considers the results of the research respondents is too beautiful. Still, with these differences, it can be a new finding that therapeutic photography can be explored with other photography approaches.

Value for Money Analysis of Bandung City Goverment Financial Reports 2022-2023
No full textThe success of regional development highly depends on good and efficient financial management. Effective management reflects accountability and transparency in government, which can be measured through the value for money (VfM) principle with economic, efficiency, and effectiveness ratios. This article aims to evaluate the financial management performance of the Bandung City Government in 2022 and 2023 based on the VfM ratio analysis. Based on the processed regional revenue and expenditure budget (APBD) data, it was found that the economic ratio in 2022 only reached 1.23% and increased significantly to 57.4% in 2023. The efficiency ratio of 2.43% in 2022 experienced a slight increase to 2.6% in 2023. Meanwhile, the effectiveness ratio of 55.9% in 2022 increased sharply to 98.8% in 2023. Although there was a significant improvement in the aspect of effectiveness, the analysis results showed that efficiency still remains the main challenge in financial management. This article also provides practical solutions to overcome these problems, such as improving budget evaluation, implementing a performance-based management system, and optimizing revenue collection strategies through information technology. This is expected to encourage better efficiency and effectiveness of budget management in the future so that it is in line with the VfM principle, which demands the use of funds economically, efficiently, and effectively
Capacities and Vulnerabilities Analysis (CVA) Toward Strengthening the Pug of Women Victims of Coastal Tidal Flooding in Semarang City
No full textIndonesia is a country with high complexity in facing the challenges of climate change. Indonesia’s vulnerability to the negative impacts of climate change is predicted to experience rainfall intensity and temperature increases. This then causes the emergence of negative impacts, such as drought and flood risk, and also increases the risk of the emergence of other extreme events that can adversely affect human life, especially women who are in the context of vulnerable people. Climate change issues affecting vulnerable communities include those living in coastal areas, cities, and small islands. Coastal areas are vulnerable to climate change and the disasters it causes. Women victims of tidal flooding (coastal) have a high vulnerability that is detrimental. Strategies and policies are needed to address these issues. This study aims to analyze the vulnerability and capacity of women flood victims to produce strategies for strengthening gender mainstreaming of tidal floods in Semarang City. The capacities and vulnerabilities analysis (CVA) technique is used to reveal women’s capacity or ability to deal with unfavorable circumstances or tidal flood emergencies. Design of Lubuklinggau City Policy: A Review of the Establishment of Local Regulations on the Guidance and Development of Micro and Small Industries
No full textThis research examines the policy formulation process for establishing a regional regulation on the guidance and development of micro and small industries in Lubuklinggau City. This initiative was taken by the Lubuklinggau City government in 2024 to address various challenges in industrial development in the city. Using qualitative methods with data collection techniques through focus group discussions, interviews, observations, and documentation studies, this research focuses on the seven initial stages of the policy formulation process. The results show that the Lubuklinggau City government has implemented a comprehensive approach, including Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA) in decision making. Findings revealed a change in policy focus to micro and small industries and stakeholder engagement through public consultation. The analysis also revealed plans to establish an industrial center area and develop an integrated information system for the data collection on micro and small industries. The resulting policy design combines aspects of guidance and development, including training programs, mentoring, and strategies for developing industrial infrastructure and resources. Based on these findings, the research recommends further studies that include policy implementation and evaluation stages to understand this policy’s long-term impact and effectiveness in supporting the growth of micro and small industries in Lubuklinggau City
Backward and Forward Linkage Effects on Firm Survival: Evidence from East Java Large and Medium Manufacturing Survey
No full textFirm survival in dynamic business environments is significantly influenced by the strength of a firm’s intersectoral linkages. While the impact of backward linkages on firm performance has been widely studied, their effect on firm survival remains unclear, especially in emerging economies like Indonesia. This study investigates the effects of both backward and forward linkages on the survival of manufacturing firms in East Java, Indonesia, using a survival analysis approach coupled with Survival-time inverse-probability-weighted regression adjustment (STIPWRA). Analysis of enterprise- level large and medium industry survey data from 1995 to 2015 (published by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS)), complemented by Input-Output tables for 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015, revealed that while backward linkages did not significantly impact survival, forward linkages had a positive and significant impact. Firms with strong forward linkages demonstrated greater resilience and longer survival times. These findings highlight the crucial role of forward-looking strategies, like cultivating strong customer relationships and market positioning, for the long-term sustainability of manufacturing firms. Policy implications center on fostering robust forward linkages through strategic investments in infrastructure, R&D, and workforce training to enhance the competitiveness of East Javan manufacturing enterprises
