The Influence of Intellectual Capital on Firm Value with Profitability as an Intervening Variable: A Study of Healthcare Companies Listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange from 2019 to 2023

    No full text
Historically, economists have focused on physical and human capital as the primary resources enabling companies to drive productive and economic activities. However, over time, knowledge has come to be recognized as a valuable asset, making Intellectual Capital (IC) a crucial determinant of a company’s value. This study aims to evaluate the impact of IC on the value of healthcare companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, with profitability acting as a mediating variable. The research is explanatory and adopts a quantitative approach, with a sample of nine companies. The exogenous variable, VAICTM, measures IC, while Firm Value is represented by Tobin’s Q as the endogenous variable, and profitability, as measured by Return on Assets (ROA), is the intervening variable. The sampling method used is purposive sampling, covering a 5-year period from 2019 to 2023. Path analysis, facilitated by SPSS for Windows 26, was employed for data analysis. The results suggest that VAICTM has a positive influence on Tobin’s Q, though the impact is not statistically significant, while it significantly impacts ROA in a positive direction. Profitability, represented by ROA, positively and significantly influences Tobin’s Q and serves as a crucial mediator in the relationship between VAICTM and Tobin’s Q

An Update on the Effects and Complications of BoNT-A in the Management of Third, Fourth, and Sixth Nerve Palsies: A Narrative Review

    No full text
This review article explores the etiology of oculomotor palsies—including third, fourth, and sixth cranial nerve palsies—and addresses the application of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) in the management of these conditions, along with its associated complications and side effects. The objective is to assess BoNT-A’s potential efficacy and its role across various types of nerve palsies. A comprehensive analysis of relevant studies reveals that BoNT-A holds promise as a therapeutic option in managing these conditions. BoNT-A injection into the lateral rectus muscle proves to be an effective treatment for addressing post-traumatic third nerve palsy. This is achieved by providing symptom relief and diminishing the necessity for subsequent surgical interventions. In the context of fourth nerve palsy, BoNT-A injection into the inferior oblique or inferior rectus muscles presents potential benefits but is accompanied by certain limitations. Additionally, previous studies have shown that BoNT-A injection into the antagonist medial rectus muscle for treatment of sixth nerve palsy results in favorable outcomes, such as contributing to functional improvement. The literature highlights the importance of timing, dosage, and grade of muscle dysfunction when administering BoNT-A injections. BoNT-A injection is an effective option to manage different types of cranial nerve palsies and improve binocular function. Furthermore, it plays an integral role in preventing antagonist muscle contracture and, hence, the need for future surgical intervention

Utilizing ChatGPT-3.5 to Assist Ophthalmologists in Clinical Decision-making

    No full text
Purpose: ChatGPT-3.5 has the potential to assist ophthalmologists by generating a differential diagnosis based on patient presentation. Methods: One hundred ocular pathologies were tested. Each pathology had two signs and two symptoms prompted into ChatGPT-3.5 through a clinical vignette template to generate a list of four preferentially ordered differential diagnoses, denoted as Method A. Thirty of the original 100 pathologies were further subcategorized into three groups of 10: cornea, retina, and neuroophthalmology. To assess whether additional clinical information affected the accuracy of results, these subcategories were again prompted into ChatGPT-3.5 with the same previous two signs and symptoms, along with additional risk factors of age, sex, and past medical history, denoted as Method B. A one-tailed Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed to compare the accuracy between Methods A and B across each subcategory (significance indicated by P < 0.05). Results: ChatGPT-3.5 correctly diagnosed 51 out of 100 cases (51.00%) as its first differential diagnosis and 18 out of 100 cases (18.00%) as a differential other than its first diagnosis. However, 31 out of 100 cases (31.00%) were not included in the differential diagnosis list. Only the subcategory of neuro-ophthalmology showed a significant increase in accuracy (P = 0.01) when prompted with the additional risk factors (Method B) compared to only two signs and two symptoms (Method A). Conclusion: These results demonstrate that ChatGPT-3.5 may help assist clinicians in suggesting possible diagnoses based on varying complex clinical information. However, its accuracy is limited, and it cannot be utilized as a replacement for clinical decision-making

Challenges and Advances in the Production of Transplantable Retinal Tissue from Retinal Organoids

    No full text
Retinal degenerative diseases (RDD), which impair photoreceptors, the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), and associated retinal cells, result in severe vision loss. For patients with advanced RDD, tissue replacement therapies, such as transplantation, offer potential pathways to visual rehabilitation. While fetal retinal transplantation has shown some promise in preclinical and clinical studies, human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived retinal organoids (ROs) present a promising alternative. ROs are three-dimensional tissues that replicate key aspects of retinal development, making them viable candidates for transplantation. However, the path toward clinical application faces two primary challenges: achieving Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)- compliant production and overcoming technical difficulties associated with safe transplantation. Current RO production protocols are often limited by variability in tissue morphology, yield, and reproducibility, while transplantation efforts are hindered by rosette formation and mechanical damage to the subretinal space. Recent innovations, including automated bioreactor systems and optimized surgical techniques, offer potential solutions. Further advances in understanding and preventing rosette formation are essential to improve transplantation outcomes. Continued research and technological development are necessary to unlock the full potential of ROs for visual rehabilitation in patients with retinal degeneration

    No full text
The problem of professional risks in the medical fieldhas a low priority among medical workers themselves, which can affect the quality of help to the population in the field of health care. This study aimed to identificaty the peculiarities of professional risk manifestation among medical workers and clarify the level of awareness among specialists and future professionals in the field regarding these risks. The subjects of the study were medical workers from local hospitals in Kriviy Rih, Dnepropetrovsk region, and undergraduate students from the Kriviy Rih Medical College. The study was conducted on 200 people using an accessible, spontaneous, quota sampling with elements of probability (quota’s indication — work experience), and two specially designed anonymous questionnaires were used. The majority of respondents are female (85%), only a small percentage of men (15%) are paramedics and doctors working at ambulance stations. The majority of undergraduate students are also women – 95%. By age characteristics: among the surveyed healthcare workers, the majority of the sample was made up of people over 35 years old, and among the senior students of the Kryvyi Rih Medical College, prevails the group over 25 years old. More than half of the surveyed respondents-practitioners (64%) have secondary special education and 36% have higher education. Among the surveyed healthcare professionals, the vast majority (55%) are people who have been working in the healthcare sector in medical specialties for more than 10 years. It was revealed that most respondents are familiar with traditional medical risks. The study reveals a decline in the prestige of the medical profession in modern Ukraine. The study argues that both future medical workers and practitioners often underestimate or accept professional risks. This attitude hinders their ability to perceive risks objectively, potentially leading to professional abnormality and a decline in the quality of medical services. Comprehensive strategic decisions and systemic measures are needed to protect medical workers from occupational risks
