    Clinical and electrophysiological instruments in the assessment of hyperacusis: a scoping review

    Purpose: The primary purpose of this scoping review is to map and synthesize the clinical, electrophysiological, and behavioral instruments used to assess hyperacusis in both children and adults. Auditory hypersensitivity significantly impacts quality of life, particularly in populations like those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), yet there is a lack of comprehensive synthesis regarding the main tests used for its evaluation. This study aims to fill that gap by identifying which tools are currently evidenced in the scientific literature, providing a clear overview of how hyperacusis is diagnosed and monitored. Methodology Overview: Following the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis and PRISMA-ScR guidelines, this review will employ a systematic search strategy across nine major databases, including MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science, as well as grey literature. The study selection involves a rigorous three-stage screening process (calibration, title/abstract screening, and full-text review) conducted by independent reviewers. Data extraction will focus on study characteristics, participant demographics, specific types of instruments (such as ABR, LDL, and self-assessment questionnaires), and key conclusions. Expected Outcomes: Comprehensive Mapping: A detailed identification and description of the most frequent behavioral and electrophysiological tests used in clinical and research settings. Population Insights: A clear distinction between assessment tools applied to children versus adults, including those with associated conditions like ASD. Scientometric Trends: If the study includes 50 or more primary sources, a scientometric analysis will be provided to characterize publication trends, geographical distribution, and institutional collaborations in the field of hyperacusis. Knowledge Gap Identification: The review will highlight existing gaps in the literature, guiding future research toward more standardized and effective diagnostic protocols

    Metacognition in Physical Therapy Students: A Scoping Review Protocol

    This project is a scoping review that aims to examine the extent, nature, and characteristics of the existing literature on metacognition among physical therapy (physiotherapy) students. Metacognition—defined as awareness and regulation of one’s own cognitive processes—is considered essential for effective learning, clinical reasoning, and professional development in health professions education. While metacognition has been widely studied in other health professions, the literature focused specifically on physical therapy students remains fragmented and has not been comprehensively synthesized. The purpose of this scoping review is to map how metacognition is defined, studied, measured, and applied within physical therapy education across both didactic and clinical training contexts. The review will include studies that explicitly address metacognition, as well as closely related constructs (e.g., self-regulated learning, self-assessment, self-monitoring, reflective practice) when they are clearly linked to metacognitive processes within the aims, conceptual framework, methods, or discussion. Eligible sources will include quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and theoretical or opinion papers involving students enrolled in professional physical therapy or physiotherapy programs. This review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews and will be reported in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Searches will be conducted in PubMed (including MEDLINE), CINAHL, Embase, ERIC, and PsycINFO, limited to English-language, peer-reviewed literature published within the past five years. Study selection and data extraction will be performed independently by two reviewers, with discrepancies resolved through discussion or consultation with a third reviewer as needed. Data to be extracted will include study characteristics, educational context, metacognitive constructs examined, methods of assessment or intervention, and key findings. The expected outcomes of this review include a comprehensive mapping of how metacognition is conceptualized and operationalized in physical therapy education, identification of methodological and conceptual gaps in the literature, and synthesis of themes relevant to educational practice and future research. Findings are expected to provide a comprehensive overview of how metacognition is conceptualized and operationalized in physical therapy education and to highlight gaps and areas for future research

    This project introduces a descriptive methodological framework based on the formulation Life ≡ Φ(t) ⊗ O(t). The framework does not constitute a theory of life, nor does it propose causal, normative, or teleological claims. It defines a regime of viability grounded in the dynamic, non-compensable coupling between an active energetic flow Φ(t) and an internal organization O(t). The objective is to specify the epistemological status, minimal operational criteria, and explicit limits of use of this formulation. The approach is strictly descriptive and applies to living and non-compensable systems subject to irreversibility, across scales, without claiming universality. The protocol provides a minimal tool to identify when a system remains viable and when functional stoppage occurs, based solely on observable persistence or rupture of the Φ(t)–O(t) coupling. No assumptions are made regarding origin, purpose, hierarchy, or value. No prescriptions, predictions, or restorative interpretations are derived
