Influences of word form variability on toddlers' novel word learning
Word form variability is a common feature of children's early language environments. Both diminutivized word forms and reduplicated word forms, for instance, are attested in English-learning children's naturalistic input as alternate (and often co-occurring) labels for early-learned words (e.g., Casey & Casillas, 2022; Moore & Bergelson, 2024; Ota et al., 2018). Here, we ask how wordform variability impacts 18- to 36-month-old children's novel word learning. We test for differences in children's ability to map novel disyllabic word labels to novel isoluminant objects across 3 different word form variability conditions—no variation, natural variation, and unnatural variation—to directly test the consequences of word form variability on novel word learning

National allostatic load in Iran: linking structural stress to population mental health
Chronic socio-political, economic and ecological stressors rarely act on individuals in isolation; they accumulate across institutions, communities and generations, shaping the mental health of entire populations. Drawing on allostatic load theory and systems neuroscience, I argue that this concept can be extended from individuals to political and institutional systems in a way that provides a mechanistic vocabulary for how structural stress destabilises population mental health. Using Iran as a case study, I outline how recurrent political crises, environmental degradation, prolonged sanctions, and scientific isolation interact to produce a state of national allostatic load (NAL). In this state, regulatory hubs weaken, defensive responses become chronically hyperactivated, and evidence-based functions including mental health research and care are progressively eroded. I propose model-based predictions linking features of NAL to rising psychiatric morbidity, service fragmentation and clinician burnout in Iran and arguably in other structurally stressed settings
Supernatural Agent Experiences on Psychedelics: A Predictive Account
Encounter with supernatural agents and other drug-occasioned immaterial entities are a common aspect of psychedelic experiences. However, existing theories offer incomplete explanations for this phenomenon. This paper proposes a theoretical model of psychedelic supernatural agent experiences grounded in active inference. We review recent theoretical models of psychedelic neurological activity to explain how increased entropy under psychedelics alters precision weighting, creating the cognitive conditions under which supernatural agent inferences are recruited to generate perception. We relate this to predictive processing accounts of supernatural agency detection outside psychedelic contexts, emphasizing the role proximate and remote contexts play in strengthening priors of agency presence. To explain these phenomena absent strong pre-existing beliefs, we propose an integrationist approach– that SA inferences are uniquely capable of addressing altered sensory evidence arising across the brain’s modalities within a coherent perceptual model, restoring error minimization capacities via reorganization of phenomenal self-models and instantiation of alternative agency inferences. This model offers a potentially generalizable cognitive account of supernatural agent encounter across altered states, and forwards several theoretical consequences consistent with current evidence which can be further empirically validated
