Psychosocial Intervention in Response to COVID-19 Pandemic in Sarawak
No full textIn the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has been anticipating a greater need for mental health and psychosocial support with the rise in mental health issues when facing many struggles and uncertainties, testing the limits of our current health care system. In this paper, we aim to present a general view of the psychosocial support implemented in Sarawak during the COVID-19 pandemic from the lens of different socio-ecological systems in Sarawak which include the healthcare system, community organizations, and the policy makers. Firstly, this paper provides an overview of the COVID-19 situation in Sarawak in general for the past year. Worth to mention, Sarawak was the first state in Malaysia recorded fatality case resulted from COVID-19 and this inevitably triggered strong negative emotional response during the initial stage of the pandemic. Secondly, the combined efforts initiated by the local state government, the state health departments, several general hospitals and major health clinics were addressed. The delivery of health care service had to be modified according to the strict preventive and social distancing measures recommended by the public health system, including the shift of conventional service to the provision of tele-counselling and psychological first aid. Also, the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on mental health has brought the politicians’ attention. Lastly, the challenges faced in dealing with the mental health services during the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential paths of the mental health movement were discussed
Entrepreneurial Intention Among University Students: Does Family Background Matter? A Narrative Review
No full textThis paper explores the influence of family business background on the entrepreneurial intention of university students and how it affects their career choice. Entrepreneurial education has limited success in promoting entrepreneurial activities among the educated youth prompting academicians to look at avenues to ameliorate it. Though family business background has been regarded as an influencing factor in recent empirical studies, it has received modest attention. Besides, conflicting views have emerged. This paper therefore reviews literature on the influence of family business in entrepreneurship and the implications it may have in planning effective future entrepreneurial activities. 34 original articles from Scopus, Google Scholar and Science Direct databases were reviewed. Findings revealed that family business plays a key role by enhancing the students' knowledge, skills, confidence, and attitude towards entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial education too was found to be more effective on students from a family business background. Policymakers and curriculum designers need to consider the family background of students to make optimum use of available resources and ensure greater entrepreneurial ventures in future. This paper also discusses on the gaps in existing knowledge and directions for future study
Isu Gelandangan dan Keciciran Pendidikan dalam kalangan Gelandangan Kanak-Kanak
No full textKeciciran gelandangan kanak-kanak di dalam pendidikan menjadi suatu isu yang membimbangkan. Ketiadaan peluang untuk gelandangan kanak-kanak ini mendapat akses kepada pendidikan menjadikan mereka sering mengalami keciciran dalam mendapatkan peluang kepada pendidikan. Kertas konsep ini cuba membincangkan faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan kanak-kanak ini mengalami keciciran dalam pendidikan. Antaranya seperti faktor kesihatan mental ibu bapa, dokumentasi, kegagalan institusi kekeluargaan, kesempitan ekonomi keluarga dan lokasi tempat tinggal. Keadaan ini telah memberikan kesan yang kurang baik kepada gelandangan kanak-kanak. Ia boleh melibatkan kesan kepada gelandangan kanak-kanak sendiri, termasuk ibu bapa, masyarakat, kerajaan dan negara. Kertas konsep ini turut membincangkan tentang cabaran yang dihadapi oleh kerajaan dalam menyediakan peluang pendidikan kepada gelandangan kanak-kanak; seperti kekurangan dana dan ketiadaan kerjasama daripada ibu bapa gelandangan kanak-kanak. Diharap kertas konsep ini dapat memberi pendedahan kepada bidang ilmu dalam memahami isu pendidikan dan gelandangan kanak-kanak yang tercicir daripada peluang pendidikan
Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Commitment and Motivation of Physics Teachers to Implement Online Teaching and Learning during COVID-19 Pandemic
No full textMost educational institutions were closed as one of the measures to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Teachers are mobilized to adapt online teaching and learning (OTL) methods to continue the educational process. However, previous studies have found that teacher motivation is affected due to this pandemic. Therefore, a quantitative study using questionnaire was conducted to examine the influence of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and commitment on Physics teachers' motivation to implement OTL. A total of 77 male and 109 female Physics teachers in Sabah were selected using a stratified random sampling method. Descriptive analysis using SPSS found that teachers' level of TPACK, commitment, and motivation in implementing OTL is high. Multiple regression analysis found that the constructs of Content Knowledge and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge in TPACK have a significant relationship and influence on the motivation to implement OTL. The commitment constructs: Commitment to School, Commitment to Teaching, and Commitment to Profession, were also found to have a significant relationship and influence on the motivation to implement OTL. This study is helpful to stakeholders in understanding the situation of Physics teachers while carrying out essential tasks in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic to formulate relevant policies and programs for the survival of the national education system
Navigating Towards Sustainable Development: Determinant and Prevention Strategies for Household Food Waste in Malaysia
No full textThe amount of food discarded by Malaysian households is substantial, to a great extent, avoidable. Minimizing food waste at the household level, therefore, plays a crucial part in the food chain responsibility. The little review has considered the effectiveness of interventions aimed at preventing food waste on itinerary stages of the food system. This significant gap, if filled, could help support those looking at reducing food waste in the developing world, providing knowledge of what interventions are specifically effective at preventing food waste. By using an extensive literature review, this paper clarified factors influencing food waste generation based on itinerary stages. This paper outlines five antecedents and recommendations for food waste reduction at the household level by using four strategies including sharing extra food and cooking, planned purchase schedule, skills on storing fresh food, and understanding family preferences which eventually can contribute to sustainable development goals. The integrated strategies are fruitful in improving household food waste management and preventing food waste generation as well as remedying existing policy gaps in Malaysia
Preserving Indigenous Semai Folktales as A Process of Educating 21st Century Learners Through Gamification
No full textGamifying Semai folktales is a project which aims to preserve the Semai cultural heritage and values in the 21st century and the gamification idea is also in line with policy makers, the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, via its Minister, mentioned the importance of integrating gamification in Teaching &Learning of all levels of education. The project explores the idea of gamification in encouraging ESL students to read short stories from various genres and culture and it is also set to disclose the ramifications of language gamifications in ESL teaching and learning particularly in the choice of Orang Asli Semai folktales in the selection. To ensure the language learners’ understanding of the Semai folktales, the animated movie comes with online quizzes to help the language learners to comprehend the content of the story and are able analyse the short story elements. Applying gamification in teaching and learning will give a new dimension not only to the students but also to prepare more dynamic language educators in embracing the rapid change in teaching and technology. Since gamification has exciting elements which can be motivating to the students, the videos and online quiz questions created have great commercialization potential. The videos uploaded on YouTube will be able to garner followers and the online questions uploaded on Quizzes can be accessed by any ESL learners. The findings revealed that most students preferred language activities with gamification which are more relevant to the 21st century learners
COVID-19 and The Impact of Online Learning on the Higher Institution Students’ Health
No full textThe COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on higher education institutions. Online teaching and learning have become a new norm, which may lead to lifestyle changes and impacting the university students' health. This study is conducted to investigate the impact of online learning on higher learning institution students’ health. A total of 384 students were recruited from a local university. All respondents were requested to complete an online survey for three months. The results indicated that majority of the respondents feel less satisfied with online learning. They reported to experienced several health issues as a result from online learning. Besides, online learning satisfaction level and health issue were found to be moderately positively correlated. This study can be a good rationale for the relevant parties to work cooperatively in improving the online learning satisfaction level as well as the students’ health condition
The Legal Protection of E-Consumers Against E-Commerce Fraud in Malaysia
No full textIn the past decade, E-commerce has developed and plays a vital role in our daily lives. However, fraud in E-commerce has increasingly become more prevalent and causes huge monetary loss, especially to E-consumers which usually results in them being unable to get what they have paid for. Fraudsters use various modus operandi to trick E-consumers such as displaying cheap goods via online platforms to induce them to pay for the goods. Despite considerable concerns about E-commerce fraud in Malaysia, the legislative sanction is still inadequate due to the deficiency of the existing legal framework. This paper examines the nature of E-commerce fraud, understand the modus operandi, and look into the legal protection afforded to E-consumers in Malaysia. It employs doctrinal content analysis and secondary data from the Malaysian Penal Code and the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998, academic journals, books, news articles and online databases. The authors contend that the lack of legal protection for E-consumers is due to the insufficiency of the law and the lack of awareness of the gravity of the such crime. Effective governance of fraud in E-commerce is imperative to facilitate prosecution and investigation and holistic protection for the victims of cyber fraud
An Insight on Social Distancing During COVID-19: Online Survey on Public’s Understanding, Practice and Perception
No full textOne of the first critical recommendations made by the Malaysian government as part of the COVID-19 prevention measures was social distancing, also known as physical distancing. It has thus become necessary to determine to what extent this measure has successfully prevented the spread of the virus. However, the public has mixed feelings about this topic, so a study is required to understand the present situation. This study aims to assess the public's understanding, attitude, and practice regarding social distancing, particularly during the early stages of the Movement Control Order (MCO). An online survey was conducted from 19 June to 19 July 2020. The study also applied non-probability sampling, an unrestricted, self-selected survey, and the adopted snowballing method. The study concluded that the general public has a high knowledge, practice, and a positive attitude toward physical distancing. In conclusion, human nature is influenced by their understanding, attitudes, perceptions, and intentions to comply with the new practice
