    No full text

The Interplay of Affect and Power Structures in Mountains May Depart

    No full text
In recent years, affective theory has gained significant attention in Western film studies and gradually influenced Chinese cinema research. However, its application in Chinese film studies remains superficial, particularly in the lack of in-depth exploration of the political nature of affect and its interaction with power structures. As a representative of China's ‘Sixth Generation’ directors, Jia Zhangke is not primarily known for political narratives, but his works centre on social realities, implicitly revealing the oppression and influence of social power on individuals through the depiction of ordinary lives. This study applies affective theory to analyse the interaction between affect and power structures in Jia Zhangke’s Mountains May Depart. The analysis focuses on three dimensions: affect as the embodiment of power, affect as the physical manifestation of power, and affect as a means of resistance and self-rescue. Through specific analyses of the film texts, the study demonstrates that affective movement is both an important medium for emotional expression and a key to the operation and resistance of power in film narratives. The study finds that Mountains May Depart fuses individual emotions with social power through the multidimensional expression of affective movement. The affective movement not only demonstrates the implicit operation of power, but also expresses the individual's resistance to social oppression and the reconstruction of subjectivity through the transformation of emotions

The Prevalence of Toxic Personality Traits in OUM Kelana Jaya

    No full text
Toxic personality traits, particularly narcissism and Machiavellianism, are characterized by detrimental behaviours that can negatively impact organizational climate and employee well-being. These traits are increasingly relevant in workplace studies due to their profound effects on performance, satisfaction, and organizational dynamics. This research aims to identify the factors contributing to the development of toxic personalities and assess the consequences of unmanaged toxic personalities on organizational climate, employee satisfaction, and performance, particularly at Open University Malaysia. Using a quantitative approach, the study gathered data through surveys measuring levels of narcissism, Machiavellianism, toxic personality traits, organizational climate, employee satisfaction, and job performance. Analytical methods included descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and independent samples t-tests to identify significant relationships and variations among these variables. The findings reveal skewed distributions for narcissism, toxic personality traits, and contributing factors, with a weak positive correlation between narcissism and Machiavellianism. No significant gender differences in toxic traits were identified, and the age factor was not a significant predictor. These results underscore the subtle but present impact of toxic personalities within OUM, suggesting that, while not pervasive, toxic traits can disrupt organizational harmony if left unaddressed. This study highlights the importance of fostering a positive organizational culture by implementing targeted interventions, such as training programs, conflict resolution mechanisms, and clear human resources policies. Such measures can help mitigate the adverse effects of toxic personality traits, contributing to a healthier, more productive work environment at OUM. Further research is encouraged to deepen understanding of the factors shaping toxic personality traits and their long-term impact on institutional dynamics

The current study addresses the ideologies employed in the news discourse regarding Saudi female Olympians. It mainly examines the linguistic and ideological portrayal of Saudi female athletes in Western and Arab media. This study analyzes CNN and Al-Jazeera's news reports linguistically and ideologically. The primary objective of this article is to examine how both news agencies employ linguistic structures to highlight their ideology regarding the engagement of Saudi female athletes in the Olympics. To critically analyze these two channels' news discourses and assess their linguistic and ideological frameworks, Van Dijk's (1998) Ideological Square has been implemented to elucidate both channels' depiction of the "Self" (in-group) and the "Other" (out-group) regarding Saudi female Olympic participation. The linguistic analysis of each news report was conducted at two levels: global and local. At the global level, each report was analyzed to reveal the topics (themes) covered whereas at the local level, each report was analyzed in terms of lexical structures, syntactic structures and rhetorical devices. The global level findings indicate that the dominant topics (themes) in both channels' reports sought to challenge and alter stereotypical norms, as well as to empower women. The local level findings are consistent with the global level ones. The reports predominantly featured complex sentences that contain rich details. They also used a significant volume of lexical items and rhetorical devices related to the athletes' inaugural participation and struggles. Additionally, the ideological analysis of both channels reveals that both channels portray Saudi female athletes positively as the "Self" and simultaneously portray others opposing those female athletic participation negatively as the "Other"

The U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy: Evolution and Future Prospects

    No full text
In 2017, the U.S. government adopted the Indo-Pacific concept to guide its strategy toward Asia. This initiative emerged from a decade of increasing U.S. engagement with military allies and strategic partners in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. The primary objective of the Indo-Pacific strategy is to strengthen political and military ties between the United States and countries within this expansive area while countering China’s growing influence. This paper will examine the progress of the U.S. National Security Strategy toward Asia in the 21st century and evaluate its possibilities for President Donald Trump’s second administration. We will revisit the theoretical framework of offensive realism theory and its prospects for the rising competition between the United States and China. We argue that the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy will continue to advance in the coming years, primarily through close cooperation with India, a key U.S. strategic partner. However, contrary to the expectations of the offensive realism, Washington will not lead a military balancing coalition in Asia to contain Beijing. Instead, the U.S. government will likely demand more responsibilities from its Asian allies, particularly Japan, requiring a greater commitment to maintaining a favourable regional balance of power
