The Students’ Perception through the Implementation of Contextual Teaching Method in Learning Speaking in Senior High School
No full textThe objective of the research is to find out the students’ perception through the implementation of contextual teaching method in learning speaking at the second grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Malili . This research applied descriptive quantitative method. The population of this research was the second grade students of Exact Study Program in SMA Negeri 1 Malili. The researcher used total random sampling which the researcher took 25 students from one class. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire to find out the students perception through the implementation of contextual teaching method in learning speaking. The result of the research shows that the students gave very good classification through the implementation of contextual teaching method. Based on the data from the questionnaire, the researcher concluded that the students’ perception through the implementation of contextual teaching method in learning speaking at the second grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Malili is very good based on the total score of the students’ peception was 1410 (Score range 1400 – 1750) and the mean score of the anwer of questionnnaire is 280
Profiling ESP Students’ Needs as Recommendation for Designing Hospitality Syllabus in Indonesian Vocational Schools
Get PDFThis descriptive qualitative study examines the needs of ESP students’ as a fundamental basis for designing an English for hotel program in the context of vocational secondary school in Indonesia. English teachers and students from hospitality program collaborated to investigate learners’ specific needs, which were then used to make recommendations for classroom implementation and instruction. The study aimed to understand how students in the hospitality program perceive their English needs and assess the adequacy of the current syllabus in meeting those needs. The findings revealed that students identified a range of language skills they need to acquire, including speaking, listening, reading and writing skills with particular emphasis on communication in hotel costumer service situations. Students expressed their expectations for practical, interactive and industry-relevant language learning experiences. The study emphasizes the importance of incorporating materials and real-world scenarios into syllabus to enhance students’ language proficiency and job readiness. The research findings serve as a valuable contribution to reorganizing the syllabus to better align with the students’ needs. Further research is recommended to explore the significance of addressing students’ specific needs as language learners and in relation to their career goals in the hotel industry.  
The Influence of the Hello English Application towards Students’ Learning Achievement in Vocabulary Mastery
Get PDFThe objective of this research was to determine the impact of the Hello English application on students' vocabulary acquisition. This study adopted a quasi-experimental design and quantitative research methodology. Data were obtained from 30 eighth-grade students, 15 of whom were in the experimental class and 15 of whom were in the control class. The instrument for data collection was vocabulary tests that were intended to determine if the Hello English program had an effect on students' vocabulary knowledge. The findings of the data analysis indicate that the experimental class's mean score on the pre-test was only 34 but climbed to 57.3 on the post-test. In contrast, the mean pre-test score for the control group was 43, whereas the post-test score was just 39.6. As a result, the class adopting Hello English as the treatment saw a considerable improvement
Student Teachers’ Strategies to Obtain Students’ Attention during Teaching Practice

The purpose of this study is to investigate the methods that student teachers employ during their classroom teaching practicum to attract their pupils' attention. Researchers used the classroom observation method to investigate each strategy utilized by student teachers. During the observation, student teachers used a combination of verbal and nonverbal strategies to get the students' attention; however, there needs to be follow-up on all of these methods. The conditions, including the level of loudness in the classroom, are why the student teachers had to keep using the same tactics. Clapping and sussing are the most effective methods for obtaining students' attention because of the ease with which it may be transferred to students
Deviation among Ghanaian Basic School Pupils Use of English in the Classroom: A Case Study of Bono and Ahafo Regions
Get PDFThe focus of this study is to discuss some deviations and innovations basic school pupils in the Bono and Ahafo regions of Ghana use in their classrooms and how these deviations are applied to their communication in the classroom. A descriptive survey design was adopted to help achieve these objectives. A qualitative approach was adopted to help explain the study better. A total population of 9,219 pupils and a sample size of 400 pupils were observed for the study. The findings of the study revealed that in the area of phonology, pupils replace the inter-dental fricative /ð/ with a voiced alveolar stop /d/. They also used the voiceless dental fricative /θ/ in place of /t/ a voiceless alveolar in their speech. Again, most pupils also use the trill /r/ in place of the /l/ sound both in writing and articulation. Under semantics, pupils usually transliterate statements from their L1 into the target language (English) and tend to use hyperbole for emphasis. Furthermore, over-generalization of syntactic rules was found as one of the innovations pupils make in classroom communication. Spelling pronunciation was also found as part of the innovations basic school pupils use in classroom communication
Oral Feedback for English Language Learners Development
Get PDFIn ELT there are many types of oral feedback that can be used by teachers to respond and correct the mistakes of language learners. However, there are still many teachers who have difficulty or less reflection in choosing the appropriate feedback for students. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the important role of the types and ways in giving oral feedback by an English teacher in language learner development. This study uses a content analysis method using secondary data taken from the previous study in the form of journal articles and thesis published in Indonesian and International journal sites in the past two decades. The result of this study revealed that from 2009 to 2021 there were many changes regarding the application of oral feedback. However, it was found that corrective feedback always be used continuously from year to year, while one of the most dominant types of oral feedback used was explicit feedback.
 
Students’ Anxiety in Learning English Writing Skills in Senior High School Level
No full textThe purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that contribute to students' English writing anxiety in the Science 11 class at UPT SMAN 11 Luwu. Students' levels and causes of writing anxiety in English are described (cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and avoidance behavior). Descriptive statistics were used for this investigation. Simple random sampling was used to select a sample of 68 students from the population of eleventh-grade students in a science class. The Causes of Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (CSLWAI) by Rezaei and Jafari was used to describe the main factors that contribute to students' writing anxiety, and the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) by Cheng was used to analyze students' anxiety levels. SPSS version 22 and Microsoft Excel 2019 were used to find the mean and percentage of the data, respectively. Students who reported high levels of writing anxiety were statistically typical (M=73.06>65). Inadequate writing technique, linguistic difficulties, a lack of practice, and time constraints are also major contributors to students' writing anxieties
Presentation-Practice-Production (PPP): Elicitation Technique Used by the English Teacher to Teach Grammar

Presentation-Practice-Production (PPP) has been a common teaching model to improve grammar understanding. A videotaped classroom found on YouTube uses the PPP model with proper elicitations that create student-centered. This study aims to investigate the number of elicitation questions in each stage of PPP and its role to stimulate learning that most benefits students. A quantitative method was used to determine the most frequently used type of elicitation question in each stage. In addition, the data of the selected transcript extracts is qualitatively analyzed using conversational analysis. The result shows that closed-ended questions are mostly used in the presentation phase. Meanwhile, open-ended questions are mostly used in the practice and production phases. It is concluded that a close-ended question fits the stage that needs high guidance from the teacher like when lecturing. Meanwhile, the open-ended question is suitable for a stage that is freer for students to practice and explore. 
The Effectiveness of Inside-Outside Circle Technique in Teaching Speaking at Vocational High School

This research aimed to reveal the effectiveness of using the Inside-Outside Circle Technique in teaching speaking. Based on the observation in January 2021, the researcher found several problems. First, students lacked vocabulary. Second, students were not speaking fluently. And the last, some students speaking skills were still varied. Thus, the researcher has done the research in SMKN 1 Baso to know whether the use inside-outside circle technique is effective or not toward students speaking ability. This research was descriptive-quantitative. The researcher used purposive sampling to determine the sample because the researcher has some consideration to determine the samples. The researcher chose two of six classes as the sample. The sample in this research was 42 students of class X AKL and X PKM. The technique of data collection in this research was documentation. The research results show that using the inside-outside circle technique is effective in teaching speaking. The percentage of the students was between 61-80 %, with the mean score calculated as 78,59, with the rating quality being effective. It means the data proved that the inside-outside circle technique is effective in teaching speaking in 10th grade of SMKN 1 Baso
A Decade of Researching on Professional Development in a Graduate Program: A Systematic Review
Get PDFThis paper aims to provide a logical and comprehensive systematic review of MA students’ theses related to professional development (PD) in an educational institution in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. This systematic review used a qualitative method to analyze 28 unpublished PD theses (2010 – 2020) in a graduate program of a public tertiary institution in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. There were four main research concerns, including (1) research aims, (2) research methodology, (3) findings, and (4) limitations of the theses. After the review, a list of strengths and weaknesses of these studies is found, evaluated, and presented in this article. The review shows that these studies did contribute diverse knowledge and practices of PD in the educational system of Vietnam, particularly in the Mekong Delta. On the other hand, the data collection instruments and research designs needed improvement to a certain extent. Specifically, observations were not used much in the theses. Besides, the candidate researchers overused a descriptive research design for their theses. Thanks to the analysis, some implications and new ideas for further research in PD are discussed at the end of this paper.
