    Online Peer Assessment in Nurturing Students Writing Skill

    This study aims to investigate the process of online peer assessment implementation in a writing activity and to find out the students’ responses toward the implementation of online peer assessment in learning writing skills. This research uses a qualitative approach and case study as the research design. The data were collected with the triangulation data by observation, interview, and documentation. Observation checklist, in-depth interview, and documentation used as data retrieval instruments. The subject of this study is an English teacher and students of class XI TKJ 1 at SMKN 1 Rawamerta. The result of this study shows that the implementation of peer assessment in writing skills is very effective to help the students in learning writing and evaluating learning process. Before the implementation of peer assessment, the students were not able to recognize their mistakes in detail, they could only find out about the numerical score, and did not know about how to assess. Based on the result obtained, it is concluded that teaching writing to the students’ responses toward the use of peer assessment was positive. It can be seen from the attitude and enthusiasm. Students agreed that peer assessment is a very effective technique used in writing activities. It can be concluded that online peer assessment can be applied both in writing and speaking as well as an important part of the move towards more forms of participatory learning. There is a need to apply it in the schools and universities since it is more adaptable to modern developments in the assessment of learning outcomes

    Mother-Tongue Interference in Learning English in English Meeting Club

    Interference is a phenomenon that occurs in a society when learning a new language and bilingualism is one of the causes why interference is. Interference occurs mostly because the speakers who have more than one language used to interact with one another. This study aimed to describe the kind of interference errors made by learners of English in English Meeting of disorders caused by the mother tongue. This study used qualitative method which its subject was taken from participants of English Meeting. The collecting of data used audio recording which was converted into transcription. The results showed that interference errors committed by English language learners' is generally influenced to phonetic refers to speech sounds, lexical interference to the level of words and grammar disorder refers to the rules of grammar in language. This is due to the fact that the speaker Indonesia experienced a huge obstacle when trying to use English as the target language as first language learners have mastered.     The Use of Small Group Discussion in Teaching Reading Comprehension at Junior High School

    The background of this research is that the use of the small group discussion method is more effective than the preaching method in teaching reading comprehension. understanding because they can read more comprehensively with their friends in small groups and then discuss the information they have read. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of student learning outcomes by using small group discussions in learning reading comprehension. This study uses a quantitative method by giving tests, namely pre-test and post-test to twenty eighth grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah Camba. This research applied a pre-experimental design. The test given to students is in the form of multiple-choice in the form of narrative text reading. The results of this study indicate that the experiment conducted by the researcher on students affects learning outcomes by Using Small Group Discussions in teaching reading comprehension. The average value in the pre-tests is 49.25 while the post-tests have an average value of 82.75. It was provided in the value of the t-test (8.152) which was greater than the value of the t-table (2.093). It indicated that there were significant differences, this is also indicated H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected

    Designing Lectora Inspire-Based Application as Interactive Multimedia for Teaching Vocabulary of Recount Text

    This research aimed to design an appropriate interactive multimedia to support teaching vocabulary of recount texts to tenth-grade students of MAN 2 Pontianak using Lectora Inspire. The interactive multimedia was designed based on the teacher’s interview, analysis of the current syllabus, and the English textbooks. The writer applied ADDIE as the research model. However, the writer only implemented four phases which were analyzing, designing, developing, and evaluation (ADDE). The product was designed by using Lectora Inspire and some supporting software. The contents of the interactive multimedia were focused on historical recount texts and it was adopted from “Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas X” Version 2017 that linked to syllabus and learning objectives. The interactive multimedia was completed with some interactive features like feedbacks, navigation buttons, and dictionary. The writer used expert validation to evaluate the product based on the content aspects and the design aspects. It revealed that the product validation ranged from good to very good. Therefore, the interactive multimedia was usable to support teaching and learning processes in MAN 2 Pontianak.       &nbsp

    An Analysis of Students’ Spelling Errors in Writing at the 8th grade of SMPN 2 Kamang Magek

    The aim of the research was to find out students’ spelling errors and the causes of spelling errors in writing. Writing spelling correctly is important in order to not make misunderstanding for the reader and writer. In field, researcher found some problem at related to students’ spelling errors. Most of students were not interested when they wrote spell correctly. Then, most of students were doubt in the letter that have same sound. The last was most of students often wrote Indonesian spelling in writing English that have similiar sound. The purposes of this research based on three research questions were to find out the kinds of error in spelling, the most common spelling error, and the causes of spelling error were made by students in writing. In this research, the researcher used mix method research by using descriptive design. The mix method was the combination of qualitative research and quantitative research. Quantitative research was used to answer the kind of students’ spelling error in writing and most common of error in writing. Qualitative research was used to know the causes of students’ spelling error in writing. The informants of this research was the students of VIII-1 class in SMP N 2 Kamang Magek. The total was 22 students. The data was got through documentation and interview. Documentation was used to get quantitative data and interview was used to get qualitative data. The researcher asked the students’ writing to the teacher as a documentation. The interview was done directly and indirectly because of the pandemi. The result of the research showed that there were 184 spelling errors from 22 students. There were nine kinds of spelling error such as omission of letter, addition of letter, single letter instead of double letter, double letter instead of single letter, substitution of letter, interchange of two  adjacent of letter, involving an apostrophe, multiple error. Therefore, the most common spelling error was substitution of letter which students changed letter incorrectly with 35,3% percentage. Moreover, there were some reasons why the students of SMP N 2 Kamang Magek made spelling error. The first was the difficulties between spoken and written form in English, it made students were not able to remember the spelling. Second was most of students were influenced by students’ first language when they wrote spelling. The last was lack of students’ desire to write correct spelling

    The Students' Mastery of Modal Auxiliary at the Second Year of SMP Negeri 5 Malangke

    This research aims to determine the students’ mastery in using modal auxiliary at second grade of SMP Negeri 5 Malangke. This research applied descriptive quantitative method as the research design. the population of this research is class XII of SMP Negeri 5 Malangke. This research used all the students at the second grade of SMP Negeri 5 Malangke as the population of this research. The total number of population from this research is  125 and the total sample of this research is 20 students. The researcher uses purposive sampling  as the technique in determining the sample. This research used test as a instrument of this research. The results of this research indicated that the students’ mastery in using modal auxiliary at second grades of SMP Negeri 5 Malangke is still low. It can be proven from the average of this research. The average of this research is 40, it means that almost the students have low mastery in vocabulary. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the students’ mastery in using modal auxiliary at second grades of SMP Negeri 5 Malangke is poor

    There were several students’ problems that the writer found at Private Islamic Senior High Schools (MAS) including in MAS AsySyarif Koto Laweh Tilatang Kamang. First, some students are often silent in English class. Second, some students find it difficult to understand the learning material. The last the teacher ignores the differences in students' abilities. This research aims to determine the type of questioning strategy and how to apply the questioning strategy in classroom interaction. This research is qualitative descriptive. The informant of this research was an English teacher at MAS AsySyarif Koto LawehTilatangKamang. The data were obtained through observation and interviews. This research found 6 types of Questioning Strategies used by the teacher, there were Knowledge questions, Comprehension questions, Application questions, Analysis questions, Synthesis questions, Evaluation questions. And found 3 to apply questioning strategy there were, questioning at the beginning, Questioning at the middle of the class, and Questioning at the end

    The Correlation between the Teacher's Oral Feedback and the Students' Writing Motivation

    This study aims to determine the correlation between the teacher’s oral feedback and the students’ writing motivation. This study is quantitative research with a correlation method. The researcher conducted this study at SMPN 2 Kasihan.  The population of this study included all of the 8th graders. The sample of this study consists of 93 students.  To gain the data, the researcher distributed the questionnaires to the students. The data analysis technique used in this research used Rank Spearman Correlation, with SPSS version 23 for the windows program. The result of the research showed that there is a correlation between the teacher’s oral feedback and the students’ writing motivation. It is evidenced by the Rank Spearman correlation test results with the significance value of 0.000, where it is <0.05

    Exploration of Phrasal Verbs in ELT Textbooks: A Corpus-Based Analysis of Lower Secondary Level Bangladeshi Books

    The study aims at exploring the usage of the Phrasal Verbs in the lower secondary Bangladeshi ELT textbooks which are prescribed by the Government of Bangladesh at national education levels. The methodological approach continues in this study based on the corpus tools and related analysis on the topic of Phrasal Verbs usage in those textbooks. The phrasal verbs that are found in the textbooks are extracted from the textbooks; their frequency distributions are analyzed, and finally checked with the two most authentic corpus of the English Language - The British National Corpus (BNC) and Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). Alongside, deriving the top fifteen Phrasal Verbs in the textbook corpus with their significant values; the relative positions to the two reference corpora and other corpus-related scores of the phrasal verbs are compared, regarding the study of Liu (2011). The results find that the Phrasal Verbs used in the selected textbooks are quite irrelevant to the two standard big corpora. Finally, based on the findings some remarks and implications are prescribed for pedagogical purposes. The current study would be the first one that examines the Bangladeshi Lower Secondary ELT textbooks assisted by the corpus approach

    The Correlation Between Students' Critical Thinking and Argumentative Skill in IAIN Bukittinggi

    This research was directed to find out whether there any significant correlation between students' critical thinking and argumentative writing skill in IAIN Bukittinggi. The researcher found several problems in the field, the problems were students got difficulties in starting and developing their ideas into writing a paragraph, they have limited vocabulary in the English language, and some of the students don’t use transition signals. This research employed a correlation design. The population of this research was the students of the fifth semester in Iain Bukittinggi. The researcher used random sampling were the students of class 5A, class 5B, and 5C to get the sample of the research. In collecting the data, the researcher used a reading test to know of students of critical thinking, and the researcher used of writing test to know of argumentative writing essay. The data were processed and analyzed by SPSS 22.0 Statistic technique of product-moment t-test formula and consulted the result into t-table with the level of significant α = 0.05.The result of this study by the correlation coefficient (r-x-y) 0,787. It shows that there was a high correlation between students' critical thinking and argumentative writing, it included the scale of r interpretation score between 0,60- 0,79. Furthermore, with df =25. And the level of significance 0,05 (α= 5%) obtained 0,396. So , try = 0,787 > t table 0,396. So, Ha was accepted and  Ho was rejected. It means that there was a correlation between students critical thinking and argumentative writing skill
