UniVAB : För en tryggare bröstbiopsi
More than 20 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day in Sweden, making it the most common form of cancer among women. To confirm a breast cancer diagnosis, a breast biopsy is required where a tissue sample is taken from the breast. There are different methods for performing a breast biopsy and Vacuum Assisted Biopsy, also known as VAB, is a technique that is becoming increasingly more common in healthcare. However as the procedure stands today VAB needle biopsies do not come without risks. Currently there is an unnecessary risk of contamination that can lead to complications for the patients in the form of infections which may range from mild to life threatening. The existing biopsy equipment is difficult to handle and unintuitive, further decreasing patient safety and increasing session times. These types of risks should not exist in healthcare. This project has been carried out in collaboration with Turon Medtech AB, the creator of the positioning tool Cytoguide. The project group was commissioned by Turon to develop a product that reduces the risk of contamination during VAB needle biopsies. The product should not only reduce the risk of contamination but also be efficient and user friendly. To improve patient safety and streamline the breast biopsy process, the project group has developed UniVAB, a product designed to enable safer breast biopsies. The solution is not only for the benefit of the patient but also for the healthcare staff who use the product as it simplifies and streamlines the assembly process. The project group hopes that UniVAB will become a new industry standard and help create a risk free breast biopsy for women worldwide
Warehouse operations represent an industry characterized by a high incidence of workplace accidents. Statistics indicate that approximately 44 percent of fatal workplace accidents are vehicle-related. The consequences of these incidents extend beyond the affected individuals, posing broader societal impacts. Although technical safety solutions exist, many current systems rely on fixed installations, which limit their flexibility and applicability. To address this issue, the project has developed Hive Safety, a portable safety system consisting of two units: Hive and Swarm. Hive is a mobile warning device placed in vehicles, while Swarm is a personal warning unit worn by staff members. These units communicate wirelessly to provide real-time alerts in potentially hazardous situations. Warnings are delivered through both audio and visual signals to ensure that both parties are clearly aware of each other’s presence. The system was developed using a combination of agile project methodologies and principles derived from Stanford Design Thinking. A functional prototype has been produced and tested in real working environments. Through iterative software adjustments, the system’s precision has been improved, resulting in reduced measurements errors and thereby enhancing overall reliability
The influence of tactical positioning on performance in world-championship freestyle swimming
Purpose: This study examined tactical positioning and pacing in short-distance (100 m), middle-distance (200 m, 400 m) and long-distance (800 m, 1,500 m) freestyle events, focusing on the influence of race distance, competition round (HEAT vs. FINAL), and sex. Methods: Race data from multiple World Championships (2013–2023) were analyzed. Spearman's rank correlations (ρ) were calculated to examine rank stability across race distances, competition rounds, and sex. Additionally, lane distributions of Top3 finishers were analyzed to assess the impact of lane position on race outcomes. Results: Rank correlations increased progressively from the first to the final lap across all race distances (p < 0.05). Long-distance events exhibited earlier rank stabilization, with correlations reaching ρ ≥ 0.90 by 50% race completion, whereas middle-distance events showed greater positional variability throughout. Rank correlations were lower in FINALS than in HEATS (p < 0.05), indicating greater positional shifts in high-stakes races. No significant sex-based differences were observed (p > 0.05). Central lanes (4 and 5) were associated with the highest Top3 finish rates, while outer lanes (0, 1, 8, and 9) had the lowest, particularly in long-distance events. Conclusion: Finals foster more dynamic race strategies, with increased positional changes. Rank stability was achieved at a relatively earlier proportion of the race in long-distance events compared to middle-distance events. By the final lap, rank stability converged across all distances, suggesting that race order was largely set before the last lap, emphasizing early tactical positioning over late-race surges. These findings offer insights into optimizing race tactics and pacing in elite swimming. © 2025 Staunton, Ruiz-Navarro, Edholm and Born
Project-based teaching : Insights from development in teaching in construction management
Future engineers must be fluent in different technologies, methods, and methodologies requiring a highdynamic capability, in opposite to many students' behavior.Project Based Learning,student-centred with a dynamic approach to teaching where students study real-world problems andchallenges, aimsto increase dynamic capability. This research reports transforminga course inconstruction managementinto a project-based approachtostimulate students’ intrinsic motivation,i.e interest in what is learned and the pleasure it brings. Course material has been developed in fourrounds, ranging from 2022-2024.Course documentation regarding the execution of the course as wellas documented student feedback was thematically reviewed and analyzed relation to the aim of thischapter. The development shows interesting challenges in teaching regarding the balance betweenshowing results from the actual project vs. stimulation of creativity among students. Age and workexperience positively affect how the students execute the projects. It also shows the significance of thecourse framing and variation of project set-ups. Our findings also show values in PBL for students’ability to handle changes in a world with many insecure influences and it is indicated that PBL requiresa learning process over time both for students and teachers
Sustainability strategies in change : A qualitative study of evolutionary sustainability strategies and the influence of stakeholders on them in medium-sized companies
Title: Sustainability strategies in change Subtitle: A qualitative study of evolutionary sustainability strategies and the influence of stakeholders on them in medium-sized companies. Subject: Bachelor’s thesis in business administration, 15 credits Authors: Maja Ahlqvist & Jenny Gustafsson Supervisor: Jan-Olof Eriksson Problem statement: How do sustainability strategies evolve over time in medium-sized companies? What influence can stakeholders have on corporate sustainability strategies? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how sustainability strategies change over time in 5 medium-sized companies, and to analyze how different stakeholders influence this change. Method: The study has been conducted using a qualitative method and an inductive approach, which is a combination of a deductible and inductive approach. Throughout the study, we have therefore taken part in scientific articles whose material has been analyzed together with the empirical data that we have collected to investigate how well practice matches theory. Result & Discussion: The study shows that companies work with sustainability strategies that are usually more organically developed rather than deliberately planned. These strategies typically span several years and are group-managed for the companies that are group-owned. While the goals are adapted locally based on the requirements of the stakeholders. Since its implementation, CSRD reporting has become a central and substantial component of corporate sustainability efforts. The development of sustainability work is characterized by many trials and sortings, where stakeholders' needs and profitability determine which models and goals should ultimately be preserved in the companies. Ämne: Kandidatuppsats i företagsekonomi, 15 hp Författare: Maja Ahlqvist & Jenny Gustafsson Handledare: Jan-Olof Eriksson Forskningsfrågor: Hur utvecklas hållbarhetsstrategier över tid i medelstora företag? Simulating Cooperative Behaviour in Vehicular Communication : Reactivity in Simulated Traffic Environments
This thesis explores the use of V2X communication to enable reactive rerouting be-havior in vehicles, based on Decentralized Environmental Notification Messages. The implementation was carried out in the Artery simulation framework, inte-grating OMNeT++ and SUMO, with rerouting controlled via the TraCI interface. The simulation evaluated system behavior across five communication penetrationrates (0–100%), focusing on key performance indicators: average speed, time loss, route length, and trip duration. Results show that V2X-triggered rerouting can offer modest improvements intraffic flow, with average speed increasing slightly at higher penetration levels. However, this comes at the cost of longer routes and extended trip durations, dueto rerouting away from congested areas toward less direct paths. Rerouting con-ditions need to be quite conservative so as not to inflict false positives and disrupttraffic flow. These findings reflect the behavior of shortest-time path routing andconfirm that the system meets functional expectations.A key limitation was discovered during partial penetration scenarios, wheresimulation crashes occurred in Artery when communication-enabled vehicles in-teracted with non-communicating ones. This bug restricts simulation stability un-der mixed conditions and limits broader applicability. Nonetheless, the systemperformed reliably under full V2X penetration, with efficient execution of rerout-ing logic and consistent results across repeated runs. The project confirms that communication-triggered reactivity is technicallyachievable in a simulated traffic environment and offers practical insights intoits potential impact on cooperative vehicle systems.
Första linjens chef - Att stå ensam i stormen?
The purpose of this study is to investigate how first-line managers in health and social care handle the challenges they face in their leadership roles. The focus is on how these managers navigate between the goals of the organization and the needs of their employees, as well as which strategies they use to create balance in their daily work. In order to answer the study’s research questions a qualitative method was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven first-line managers working in a public sector organization in northwestern Skåne, Sweden. This qualitative approach allowed for a deeper understanding of the participants’ personal experiences and perspectives, capturing how they perceive and manage their roles, challenges, and strategies in practice. Previous research shows that the role of managers in health and social care has changed significantly in recent decades, due to major organizational reforms in the public sector. The role has become more complex, with increased responsibilities related to efficiency, performance management, and administration. First-line managers are now expected to handle a wide range of assessments while balancing demands from senior management, employees, and external stakeholders. The results show that these managers often feel caught in the middle, pressured by decisions from higher levels of leadership while also trying to meet the expectations of their employers. Still, they demonstrate an ability to find balance in their roles. This is made possible through support structures, good working conditions, and their own personal strategies. The study highlights the importance of well-functioning support systems and sustainable leadership. The internal motivation and personal engagement of the manager are key factors in creating a healthy work environment and a well-functioning organization. Balancing organizational demands with available resources is crucial and is often supported by clear, open, and responsive communication. When employees’ needs and voices are acknowledged, and leadership expectations are managed in a structured way, the manager is better able to navigate their position without losing direction or focus. Such communication builds trust and clarity, contributing to a more sustainable leadership role over time.
U-Vein : För tydligare vener
In healthcare, blood sampling is crucial for diagnosing diseases, administering medication, and overseeing a patient's health. Certain skin types can make blood vessels less visible, often requiring multiple attempts to find a vein. Vein-locating tools on the market today are limited to handheld devices, resulting in an inefficient workflow. The objective of this project was to develop a product improving vein visibility during venipuncture. The project was performed by conducting a survey to get insight into the habits of blood sampling and how the process is being experienced and a visit at a healthcare center where an interview was conducted and observation of the process around blood sampling was conducted. By following an interactive workflow along with tests, the project group was able to develop components which were later compiled into a product. The result was a prototype of the product U-Vein, which meant a step towards getting a product out on the market.
This study investigates the optimization of reinforced concrete foundation structures with the aim of reducing climate impact without compromising load-bearing capacity or structural safety. Concrete and reinforcing steel are two construction materials associated with high environmental impact. The environmental footprint of a foundation is influenced by its dimensions, the amount of reinforcement, and the depth of the foundation. In this study, 57 different design configurations with varying thicknesses and foundation depths were analyzed using a calculation tool developed in MathCAD. The results indicate that thinner foundations, when combined with increased foundation depth, provide the most favorable balance between climate impact and structural performance. The findings demonstrate that optimal dimensioning of foundations can lead to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of over 20%, highlighting the importance of sustainable design practices in the early stages of construction projects
