    Effect of cassava peels and palm kernel cake (PKC) on the heamatological and serum biochemical of grower pigs in Nigeria

    The research was carried out for a period of ten weeks at the piggery unit of the teaching and research farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of cassava peels and palm kernel cake (PKC) at 50:50 ratio on the heamatological and serum biochemical of grower pigs. Forty (40) grower pigs of large white were used; pigs were divided into 5 groups based on average initial weights (20-25kg) and each group of grower pigs were respectively allocated to each of the five treatment diets in a completely randomized design (CRD). At the end of the ten (10) weeks feeding trial, the animals were starved of feed for 12 hours before blood samples were collected from two pigs each per treatment from the ear vein using a sterilized disposable syringe   and needle. The parameters determine were red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), white blood cell (WBC), total protein, albumin, and globulin and serum cholesterol. The result indicated that heamatological and serum biochemical parameters assessed fall within the normal range and is an indication of good nutrition and adequate nutrient intake. Therefore, the animals did not suffered muscular wastage but efficient utilization of cassava peels and palm kernel cake, ultimately resulted in high tissue deposition across treatment groups

    Genetic diversity analysis of some Bangladeshi aromatic rice (Oryza sativa L.) using simple sequence repeat markers (SSRM)

    In order to germplasm management, conservation, parental identification and proper utilization of aromatic rice germplasm of Bangladesh genetic diversity assessment and molecular characterization is necessary. We used ten microsatellite markers across twenty aromatic rice landraces along with four improved varieties to discriminate and characterize among them. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 8, with an average of 4.30 alleles across 10 loci. A total of 43 polymorphic alleles were detected. The values of Polymorphic information content (PIC) ranged from 0.217 to 0.835 (average 0.495) which indicate high genetic diversity among the studied aromatic rice genotypes. It was concluded by the PIC value of RM5339 that it might be the finest marker for diversity estimation and characterize of these aromatic rice genotypes, followed by RM334, RM414 and RM28502 markers. The UPGMA cluster dendrogram constructed in this study identified seven clusters with a correlation coefficient 0.874. Molecular characterization of aromatic rice landraces of Bangladesh exhibited large variations among the genotypes. Five rice genotypes namely BRRI dhan38, BRRI dhan50, Bashmoti safed, Malaysira, Khas-kani showed highest genetic dissimilarity among the studied rice genotypes. The findings of this study would be useful for background selection in backcross breeding programs for aromatic rice improvement as well as identification of genetically distant and genetically close accessions for maintenance and conservation

    Growth performance of aromatic Boro rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. BRRI dhan50) as influenced by date of transplanting and nutrient management

    The present experiment  was  conducted  at  the  Agronomy  Field  Laboratory,  Bangladesh Agricultural  University,  Mymensingh,  during  December  2015  to May  2016 to find out the effect of transplanting date and nutrient management on the growth performance of aromatic Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan50). The experiment comprised five dates of transplanting viz. 15 December, 30 December, 15  January; 30  January and 15  February, and four nutrient managements viz., recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer (N, P, K, S and Zn @ 115, 25, 60, 18, 3.5  kg ha-1,  respectively),  poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1, 25% less than recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1, 50% less than recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Morpho-physiological characteristics were significantly influenced by date of transplanting, nutrient management and their interactions. The highest plant height (71.41 cm) was recorded in early transplanting (15 December) and the lowest plant height (66.29 cm) was recorded when transplanted on 15 February. At 75 DAT, the tallest plant (72.79 cm), the highest number of tillers hill–1 (15.13) and LAI (2.78) were obtained in 25% less than recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 and the shortest plant (66.63 cm) and lowest  number of tillers hill–1 (11.13) were recorded when applied only poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1. The highest dry matter production hill–1 (31.18 g) at 75 DAT was obtained when the crop was transplanted on 15 December and fertilized with 25% less than recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1.  Therefore, aromatic Boro rice (cv. BRRI dhan50) can be transplanted on 15 December fertilized with 25% less than recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 for appreciable growth performance

    Response of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) to vermicompost, mycorrhiza and micronutrients mixture

    A field experiments on okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L Moench) cv. Arka Anamika” was conducted at Department of Vegetable Science, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Jhalrapatan city, Jhalawar during the Kharif 2016-17 to study the effect of vermicompost, mycorrhiza and micronutrients mixture of 16 treatment combination i.e. vermicompost with two levels (2 tons/ha and 4 tons /ha), mycorrhiza with one level (Mycorrhiza seed treatment) and micronutrients mixture with two levels (50 ppm and 100 ppm). The observations revealed that the plant height of A. esculentus after 60 DAS (74 cm), plant height after 90 DAS (79.71cm), number of leaves / plant (43.17), main steam diameter (5.52 cm), number of primary branches per plant (5.10) of A. esculentus and lowest days to first flower bud emergence (33.53) of A. esculentus was noted maximum as compared to control. The results indicates that plant height, number of leaves per plant, main stem diameter, stem girth, number of primary branches increased significantly due to application of different levels of vermicompost, mycorrhiza and micronutrients mixture as compared to control. It is postulated that the vermicompost 2tons and 4tons + mycorrhiza seed treatment + micronutrients mixture 50ppm and 100ppm may positively regulate the A. esculentus growth improved. Therefore, application of vermicompost, mycorrhiza along with a mixture of micronutrients played a significant role on enhancing the growth of okra (A. esculentus) and can be applied to obtain the maximum crop yield of okra (A. esculentus)

    Growth analysis of short duration transplant Aus rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Parija) under irrigated ecosystem

    An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during April to July 2012 to examine the effect of plant spacing and nitrogen level on the growth performance of short duration transplant Aus rice (cv. Parija) under irrigated ecosystem. The experiment comprised four plants spacings viz., 20 cm × 20 cm, 20 cm × 15 cm, 20 cm × 10 cm and 15 cm × 15 cm and four nitrogen levels viz. 0, 35, 70 and 105 kg N ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Morpho-physiological characters, of transplant Aus rice (cv. Parija) significantly influenced by spacing of planting, nitrogen level and their interaction. At 60 DAT, the highest plant height (80.68 cm) was obtained at 20 cm × 15 cm spacing fertilized with 70 kg N ha-1 which was as good as 20 cm × 10 cm fertilizad with 35 kg N ha-1.  The maximum number of tillers hill-1 (15.16) was obtained at 20 cm × 20 cm spacing fertilized with 105 kg N ha-1which was statistically at par with 20 cm × 15 cmfertilized with 70 kg N ha-1.  The highest total dry matter (8.92g) was obtained at the 20 cm × 15 cm spacing fertilized with higher dose of nitrogen (105 kg N ha-1) and at 45-60 DAT, the highest crop growth rate (3.34) was obtained at 15 cm × 15 cm spacing fertilized with 35 kg N ha-1 while the lowest CGR (1.12) was recorded at the same spacing (15 cm × 15 cm) with control treatment. This study revealed that short duration transplant Aus rice cv. Parija can be cultivated at 20 cm × 15 cm or 15 cm × 15 cm spacing with 35 to 105 kg N ha-1 for proper growth

    The effects of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.): soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] rotation on the soil fertility levels are limited. An irrigated soybean: cotton rotation experiment was conducted from 2012 through 2015 near Elizabeth, Mississippi, USA. The crop rotation sequences were included continuous cotton (CCCC), continuous soybean (SSSS), cotton-soybean-cotton-soybean (CSCS), cotton-soybean-soybean-cotton (CSSC), soybean-cotton-cotton-soybean (SCCS), soybean-cotton-soybean-cotton (SCSC). The crop rotation sequences were followed continuous soybean, continuous cotton, cotton followed by soybean, soybean followed by cotton, soybean followed by two years of cotton, and cotton followed by two years of soybean. A weed control treatment of a non-glyphosate post-emergence vs. glyphosate post emergence was used in both crops. Soil samples taken prior to planting each year and in 2016 showed no differences in cation exchange capacity, organic matter, pH, or macro nutrient levels among the rotations, over the five sampling periods nor weed control methods used for either crop

    Effect of age of seedlings on the performance of drought tolerant Aman rice cultivars

    An experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture, Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU), Sonapur, Noakhali, from July 2017 to December 2017 to study the effect of variety and age of seedling on yield performance of drought tolerant transplant aman rice. The experiment consisted of three varieties viz. BINA dhan7, BRRI dhan56 and BRRI dhan71 and five different ages of seedling viz.15 days old, 20 days old, 25 days old, 30 days old, and 35 days old. The experimental design was randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Among the three varieties, BRRI dhan71 produced the highest grain yield (5.567 t ha-1) and the lowest grain yield (4.975 t ha-1) was obtained from BRRI dhan56. Among the five ages of seedlings, the highest grain yield (5.502 t ha-1) was obtained from 35 days old seedling and the lowest grain yield (5.092 t ha-1) was obtained from 15 days old seedling. In case of interaction between variety and spacing, the highest grain yield (5.723 t ha-1) was obtained from BRRI dhan71 with 35 days old seedling and the lowest (4.730 t ha-1) was obtained from BRRI dhan56 with 15 days old seedling. The result reveals that relatively older seedlings (35-days old) produce higher grain yield compared to the younger ones

    Assessment of morphological and nutritional attributes of two varieties of Ipomoea batatas (L.) utilized in Nigeria

    Morphological and nutritional studies were carried out on various parts of the two varieties of Ipomoea batatas (white fleshed TIS 87/0087 and orange fleshed UMUSPO/3) to determine their morphological and nutritional characteristics using standard techniques. Analysis of variance was employed for data analysis. Result revealed that the two varieties had similar qualitative morphological features but showed variation in their length, breadth, colour and girth. The result of the proximate analysis revealed that the nutrients were present in all the parts of the two varieties investigated but in varied proportions. Protein, fat and ash were highest in the leaves of both varieties when compared to other parts (12.13±0.20mg/100g, 3.92±0.14mg/100g and 2.85±0.06mg/100g of I.  batatas respectively.  Moisture and carbohydrate were highest in the tubers of both varieties when compared to other parts (10.73±0.22mg/100g and 81.22±3.80mg/100g) respectively while crude fiber was highest in the stem of the two varieties when compared to other parts (26.15±0.29mg/100g). Data obtained indicated that these parts of the two varieties contained appreciable amount of nutrients which could be included in diets to supplement our daily nutrient needs and animal feed. Apart from the tuber eaten by our people, other parts of the plant should also be used as food. Overall data could be a viable tool for sweet potato breeding as an improvement in sweet potato production. Morphological characteristics observed were similar indicating that the two varieties are phyllogenetically related. The data could also be used to enhance proper taxonomic characterization and identification of the species I.  batatas

    Screening of Sesbania accessions based on seed germination and seedling biomass

    Seedling emergence and germination percentage of seeds play a vital role for optimum plant population and biomass yield maximization of a crop in the field. An experiment was carried out at Plant Systematics Laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the month of April to May 2016 for the screening of Sesbania accessions based on seed germination, vigour index and initial biomass yield. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with four replications. One hundred and ten Sesbania accessions were used as experimental materials. Four hundred healthy seeds, 100 seeds as one replication, of each accession were spread uniformly on containers for the germination test. Cumulative germination percentage of seeds was counted daily up to 10 days. After 10 days, 40 seedlings (10 from each replication) were taken from each accession and measured. Quantitative descriptors viz. emergence (%) and germination (%) of seeds, vigour index, shoot length, root length, base diameter and biomass yield, varied significantly. Based on quantitative descriptors, Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) and Principal Component analyses (PCA) were conducted. In PCA, the first three principal components explained 82.64% of the total variations. In AHC, three individual clusters were developed and six accessions always remained in the same cluster. These six accessions could belong to same species. Based on their seed germination and initial seedling growth, five accessions performed better and selected for further study. Field trials of these accessions are needed to recommend one or more accessions as cultivar(s)

    Grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) fails to consistently respond to N-fertilizer when grown on a Tunica clay soil in the lower Mississippi River Valley, USA

    Information on producing grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) on clay soils found in the Mississippi Delta and similar regions is comparatively limited to what is known for the crop in other environments, especially regarding nitrogen fertility. A study conducted in 2014 and 2015 on a Tunica clay soil (clayey over loamy, montmorillonitic, non-acid, thermic, Vertic Halaquept) examined the effects of three N-fertilizer rates (0.0, 112.0, and 224.0 kg N ha-1) on yield and yield components of six commercially available hybrids. The 2014 seeding did not require irrigation while three irrigations were applied in 2015. No yield differences in hybrids or N-fertility treatments were observed in 2014 likely due to waterlogged soil, resulting in denitrification, but added N did increase yields in 2015. No consistent differences in yield or yield components occurred between hybrids either year. Yields in 2014 and at 0.0 or 112.0 kg ha-1 added N-fertilizer in 2015 were sub-standard to regional variety trial data. Rates of N-fertilizer of at least 224.0 kg N ha-1 appear necessary for grain sorghum grown on clay soils in the humid sub-tropics
