    Replication Data for: Vote Buying, Norms, Context, and Trust in Elections

    Conventional wisdom says vote buying undermines trust in elections, but few have examined this systematically. We identify why this relationship ought to hold, on average. We also derive two conditioning hypotheses: vote buying will be less consequential among citizens who view these exchanges as positive and in contexts marred by electoral irregularities. We test these three expectations with analyses of cross-national survey data and an original survey experiment. We find only a small and inconsistent relationship between vote buying and electoral trust. We find weak evidence on the role of norms and more support for the notion that context matters. We conclude that a modest connection between vote buying and electoral trust is driven less by approval of vote buying practices and more by variation in how elections are actually conducted and, related, the relative novelty of being exposed to vote buying

    Replication Data for: Turning a Blind Eye: Preventive Nuclear Counter-proliferation and the International Audience

    Paper Abstract: In contrast to diplomatic and economic tools to prevent nuclear proliferation, fewer countries have openly admitted to using counter-proliferation force. Yet, several of these operations have been quietly unfolding behind the scenes. This paper introduces a novel, small-N Nuclear Counter-proliferation dataset (NCP) of preventive counter-proliferation attacks 1942-2023. It shows the distribution of these attacks over time and finds an overall increasing trend with assassinations being the most frequently used tool to interfere with a country’s nuclear ambitions, followed by airstrikes, sabotage, cyber weapons, and more recently drone strikes. The paper provides an empirical application of NCP, showing how the study of nuclear counter-proliferation can contribute to our understanding of the international behavior in response to selected military actions. The global response of such operations have largely been limited to verbal condemnation despite the reoccurring violations of international law. I find that a target’s silence is determining the international response to an attack which implies a pattern whereas the international community's response to violence is contingent upon external prompts

    Replication Data for: Navigating Potential Pitfalls in Difference-in-Differences Designs: Reconciling Conflicting Findings on Mass Shootings' Effect on Electoral Outcomes

    Recent work on the electoral effects of gun violence in the United States relying on the difference-in-differences design has produced conflicting findings that range from null effects to substantively large effects. At the same time, as the difference-in-difference design on which this research has relied has exploded in popularity, scholars have documented several methodological issues this design faces---including potential violations of parallel-trends and unaccounted for treatment effect heterogeneity. Sadly, these pitfalls (and their solutions) have not been fully explored in political science. In this paper, we apply these advancements to the unresolved debate on the effects of gun violence on electoral outcomes in the United States. We show that studies that find a large positive effect of gun violence on Democratic vote share are a product of a failure to properly specify difference-in-differences models when underlying assumptions are unlikely to hold. Once these biases are corrected, shootings show little evidence of sparking large electoral change. Our work clarifies an important unresolved debate and provides a cautionary guide for the many scholars currently employing difference-in-differences designs

    Replication Data for: The Politics of Allyship: Multiethnic Coalitions and Mass Attitudes Towards Protest

    Recent work finds that nonviolent resistance by ethnic minorities is perceived as more violent and requiring more policing than identical resistance by ethnic majorities, reducing its impact and effectiveness. We ask whether allies---advantaged group participants in disadvantaged group movements---can mitigate these barriers. On the one hand, allies can counter negative stereotypes and defuse threat perceptions among advantaged group members, while raising expectations of success and lowering expected risks among disadvantaged group members. On the other hand, allies can entail significant costs, carrying risks of cooptation, replication of power hierarchies, and marginalization of core constituencies. To shed light on this question we draw on the case of the Black Lives Matter movement, which, in 2020, attracted unprecedented white participation. Employing a national survey experiment, we find that sizeable white presence at racial justice protests increases protest approval, reduces perceptions of violence, and raises the likelihood of participation among white audiences, while not causing significant backlash among Black audiences. Black respondents mostly see white presence as useful for advancing the movement's goals, and predominant white presence reduces expectations that protests will be forcefully repressed. We complement these results with analysis of tens of thousands of images shared on social media during the 2020 BLM protests, finding a significant association between the presence of whites in the images and user engagement, amplification, and positive sentiment. The findings suggest that allyship can be a powerful tool for promoting sociopolitical change amidst deep structural inequality
