The effect of perinatal misuse of medicinal plants by parturients on the survival of newborns in Morocco
The concept of perinatal misuse of medicinal plants among parturients is widespread and the
association between these effects and the survival of newborns requires research. The objective of
this study is to evaluate the performance of the neonatal unit at the service of pediatrics from the
Laâyoune center based on the survival analysis of newborns aged 28 to 37 weeks. This is a
retrospective analytical study carried out at the neonatal unit of the pediatric department of Laayoune
of newborns (N: 243) hospitalized at the Regional Hospital Center of Mothers using medicinal plants
perinatally. Proportional hazards regression, also called Cox regression model, was used to perform
Kaplan-Meier (K-M) survival curve analysis. Results linked to maternal (age, parity, marital status,
occupation, education, medical and toxicological history, gestational age) and neonatal characteristics
(reference age at the neonatal center, sex, birth weight, birth size, duration of resuscitation) as well
that the evaluation of maternal perinatal herbal toxicity by the severity score of intoxication, were
studied. A cohort of 243 participants, including 158 boys and girls aged 85 from urban and rural
areas, average age of one month ±7 days, hospitalized at the Lâayoune Regional Hospital Center
from April 1, 2022 to May 1 2023 Neonatal mortality was significantly associated with the use
mainly of Artemissa herba-alba Asso (OR=1.13 [1.01-1.45]), Rosmarinus officinalis L (OR=1.7
[1.43] - 2.14]) and Juniperus oxycedrus (OR=1.2 [.35-2.34]), for the survival analysis, the calculated
log-rank estimate is (13.408), with the P value between zero and three decimal places (0.000);
conclude that there is a statistically significant difference in survival times between the two
treatments: antibiotic therapy, corticosteroid therapy and observation of newborns who received no
treatment and were admitted to the pediatric department

KoSO Sunspot Area Series V2
Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KoSO) possesses one of world’s longest and homogeneous records of sunspot observations that span more than a century (1904–2017). Interestingly, these observations (originally recorded in photographic plates/films) were taken with the same setup over this entire time period which makes this data unique and best suitable for long-term solar variability studies. A large part of this data, between 1921–2011, were digitized earlier and a catalog containing the detected sunspot parameters (e.g., area and location) was published in Mandal et al. (2017). In this article, we extend the earlier catalog by including new sets of data between 1904–1921 and 2011–2017. To this end, we digitize and calibrate these new datasets which include resolving the issue of random image orientation. We fix this by comparing the KoSO images with co-temporal data from Royal Greenwich Observatory. Following that, a semi-automated sunspot detection and automated umbra detection algorithm are implemented onto these calibrated images to detect sunspots and umbra. Additionally, during this catalog updation, we also filled data gaps in the existing KoSO sunspot catalog (1921–2011) by virtue of re-calibrating the “rouge” plates. This updated sunspot area series covering nearly 115 years (1904–2017) are being made available to the community and will be a unique source to study the long term variability of the Sun

SoK: Blockchain Decentralization

Blockchain introduces decentralized trust in peer-to-peer networks, advancing security and democratizing systems. Yet, a unified definition for decentralization remains elusive. Our Systematization of Knowledge (SoK) seeks to bridge this gap, emphasizing quantification and methodological coherence. We've formulated a taxonomy defining blockchain decentralization across five facets: consensus, network, governance, wealth, and transaction. Despite the prevalent focus on consensus decentralization, our novel index, based on Shannon entropy, provides comprehensive insights. Moreover, we delve into alternative metrics like the Gini and Nakamoto Coefficients and the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), supplemented by an open-source Python tool on GitHub. In terms of methodology, blockchain research has often bypassed stringent scientific methods. By employing descriptive, predictive, and causal methods, our study showcases the potential of structured research in blockchain. Descriptively, we observe a trend of converging decentralization levels over time. Examining DeFi platforms reveals exchange and lending applications as more decentralized than their payment and derivatives counterparts. Predictively, there's a notable correlation between Ether's returns and transaction decentralization in Ether-backed stablecoins. Causally, Ethereum's transition to the EIP-1559 transaction fee model has a profound impact on DeFi transaction decentralization. To conclude, our work outlines directions for blockchain research, emphasizing the delicate balance among decentralization facets, fostering long-term decentralization, and the ties between decentralization, security, privacy, and efficiency.
