Conceptualising Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Wellbeing Neurodevelopment: An Integrative Brain Networks Framework

    No full text
Innovative integrative approaches are needed to address the current child and adolescent mental health crisis. This review presents a new transdiagnostic preventative framework for conceptualising mental health and wellbeing (MHW) neurodevelopment in childhood and adolescence - The Neurodevelopmental Theory of Mental Health and Wellbeing Capacities (NDeTeC). The NDeTeC specifies two key neuro-cognitive-affective capacities underpinning MHW, together with their associated brain networks, positioned in a developmentally fine-grained and socially-contextualised perspective on MHW. The first capacity focuses on self-regulation and identifies neurodevelopmental processes underlying adaptive managing of thoughts, emotions and behaviours - including emotional awareness and regulation of distractions, reactivity, rumination and worry. This capacity is associated with adaptive patterns of connectivity in salience-executive-default mode networks, reward network and the Hypothalamus-Pituitary Axis. The second capacity, called the self-world capacity, specifies and integrates relational processes of MHW underpinning a connected, flexible, ethically-grounded and purposeful sense of self, which are associated with shared humanity, connectedness and prosocial agency. This capacity is linked to adaptive connectivity patterns in mentalizing, empathy, prosociality and default mode networks. The review outlines how the NDeTeC framework can enable integration of different MHW constructs and associated approaches to guide improvements in long-term MHW support for children and adolescents

The Advantage of Big Team Science: Lessons Learned from Cognitive Science

    No full text
The credibility revolution in psychology and related sciences contributed to the adoption of large-scale research initiatives known as Big Team Science (BTS). BTS has made significant advances in addressing issues of replication, statistical power, and diversity through the use of larger samples and more representative cross-cultural data. However, while these collaborations hold great potential, they also introduce unique challenges related to their scale. Drawing on experiences from successful BTS projects, we identified and outlined key strategies for overcoming diversity, volunteering, and capacity challenges. We emphasize the need for clear role definitions, structured and preregistered workflows, centralized project management, and transparent decision documenting to prevent common pitfalls. Ultimately, we call for reflection on the strengths and limitations of BTS to enhance the quality, generalizability, and impact of research across disciplines. This work complements existing BTS guides by offering experientially-grounded, discipline-specific strategies and addressing underexplored logistical, ethical, and epistemological challenges in large-scale collaborations

Stress mindset patterns among adolescents and adults

    No full text
Stress is a common part of daily life. Some individuals perceive it as positive and performance-enhancing, while others view it as negative and performance-impairing. This belief about the nature of stress is known as stress mindset (Crum et al., 2013). Two widely recognized stress mindsets are "stress-is-debilitating" and "stress-is-enhancing." However, due to the heterogeneity within stress mindsets, it remains unclear if additional profiles exist beyond this dichotomy. Furthermore, there may be differences in stress mindsets between adolescents and adults, given their varying levels of maturity. Therefore, this study adopts a person-oriented approach to examine the profiles of stress mindset among both adolescents and adults

Embodied speech: sensorimotor contributions to native and non-native phoneme processing and learning

    No full text
Learning to recognize and produce foreign speech sounds can be challenging, particularly when only subtle differences distinguish these new sounds from phonemes in the native language. Functional neuroimaging evidence shows that the motor cortex is involved in speech production and in perceptual phonemic processing. This highlights the embodied nature of speech perception, predicting the potential benefits of sensorimotor-based training approaches to enhance the acquisition of foreign speech sounds. Hence, here we first review current findings on the motor contribution to not only native but also non-native phoneme perception. Available evidence has established that motor cortical activity especially shows up under non-optimal perceptual conditions, such as when native phonemes are degraded by noise or when listeners perceive non-native speech sounds. Drawing upon this evidence, we then review training paradigms that have been developed for learning foreign phonemes, with a special emphasis on those embedding manual gestures as cues to represent phonetic features of the to-be-learned speech sounds. By pointing to both strengths and caveats of available studies, this review allows to delineate a clear framework and opens perspectives to optimize foreign phoneme learning, and ultimately support perception and production

Where Women Work: How Labor Market Competition Affects Gender Conservatism

    No full text
The changing roles of women in the labor force represent a major structural transformation across advanced industrial democracies. How does this transformation shape political behavior? We argue that as women enter industries historically dominated by men, men experience heightened labor market competition that generates material grievances and fosters more conservative gender attitudes. Using variation in women’s and men’s employment across Swiss industries from 2001 to 2020, we develop a shift–share design linking national feminization trends to local exposure and combine it with longitudinal data from the Swiss Household Panel. We find that ``industry feminization'' reduces men’s employment and earnings and leads to more conservative egocentric—but not sociocentric—gender attitudes. In sum, men’s private grievances show little evidence of translating into broader political change, perhaps reflecting limited politicization of gender issues in this context. While labor market competition can foster gender conservatism, its political expression might be context-dependent
