    Analysis of Physicochemical Properties, Available Nutrients of Soil and their Correlation with Incidence of Telya Disease of Pomegranate at Northern Nasik, Maharashtra

    Maharashtra government reported 10,000 crore production loss of Pomegranate every year, due to the incidence of Telya disease. The present study was aimed to analyse the physical, chemical properties, and available micro-macronutrients in the soil of pomegranate orchards infected with Telya disease. Estimation of incidence and severity of disease was done on fifty selected orchards from different villages that were MangiTungi, Daswel, Dasane, Mulher, and Sompur. Results revealed that minimum incidence (58.66%) and severity (59.89%) were recorded in Sompur village whereas maximum incidence (74.40%) and severity (68.70%) were recorded in Daswel and MangiTungi village respectively. The pH (7.5-7.9) and free lime concentration 7.4-9.4%) were exceptionally very high for all test and control samples. Deficiency of essential macronutrients N (<150-250 Kg/ha) and K (<125-200 Kg/ha) was recorded in all test samples along with additional deficiency of Zn micronutrient (<1.0-2.0 ppm). In the case of mock orchards, all the parameters were in accordance with reference values.Statistical analysis of data declared that there was a significant difference among parameters of tested groups (P>0.05) while for control fields there were no significant differences (P<0.05). Further, a positive correlation between macro-micronutrients (Na, Ca, N, P, K, Mn) and incidence of disease was recorded which concludes that an imbalance in nutrients promotes growth of pathogens and increases susceptibility of plants to pathogenic attack. Further, balancing nutrients through fertilisers or foliar spray could be an effective strategy for an integrated pest management system

    Biodegradation of Indigo Carmine Dye by Laccase from Bacillus licheniformis NS2324

    Indigo carmine dye is used in many industries like textile, paper, cosmetics, etc. It is specially used in textile industries for dyeing denim. The untreated water discharged from these industries, especially the textile industry, poses a significant environmental threat. The conventional physicochemical methods used in treating industrial effluent are very expensive and cause secondary pollution. In the present study, an extracellular laccase-producing Bacillus licheniformis NS2324 was isolated, and a crude enzyme was used to degrade indigo carmine dye. The conditions needed for decolorisation were standardised. Optimisation studies for dye decolorisation by NS2324 laccase revealed that the enzyme was able to decolorize dye efficiently at 50 oC temperature, pH 8, with an enzyme dose of 10 IU/ml after 6 hours. Up to 96.79±1.06 per cent decolorisation was achieved under optimised conditions without the use of any mediator of laccase. Complete degradation of indigo dye by laccase in the absence of mediator makes the present study very useful for treating textile effluent from the denim industry

    The COVID-19 outbreak has caused an impervious financial and psychological burden. Health care professionals, including oral health care workers, have been risking fighting the pandemic. The chief objective of the current study was to estimate the rates of prevalence of depression, stress, and anxiety among the oral health care professionals in Jammu and Udaipur city. The study was delineated as an online cross-sectional questionnaire-based research. It was mailed to different practitioners between May and July 2020, particularly those offered their services in COVID centers. The participants were to fill the self report questionnaires. Then, the parameters were measured using depression, anxiety, and stress scale 21(DASS 21) and Hamilton anxiety rating scale (HARS) to measure the degrees of depression, stress, and fear among the volunteers. The target population was divided into age groups between 23 to 28 years and over 28 years. Four hundred ninety responses were received and were considered for the study. The acquired data were analysed using IBM SPSSsoftware (windows version 23). The mean and standard deviations were calculated for stress, anxiety, depression using mentioned scale. The results were compared based on gender and age group. A statistically significant variance in stress level was found between male and female groups (p=0.002) and for the two age groups (p=0.001). Using the Hamilton anxiety rating scale, no statistically significant divergence could be seen among male and female participants. The current study showed stress, anxiety, and depressions were prevalent among health care workers working in COVID pandemic situations. Therefore, mental health status must be addressed, and issues must be resolved

    Investigation on Oral Toxicity of Diallyl Sulfide A Principle Organosulfur Compound Derived from Allium Sativum Garlic in Mice

    Allium sativum (garlic) is used as food additives and medicines. Its health benefits are well known, which are mainly contributed by the active organosulfur compounds present in it. Though garlic widely used, but limited is known about preclinical acute toxicity of its organosulfur compounds in mice. The present study aimed at toxicity evaluation of diallyl sulfide (DAS) in C57BL/6 mice following oral administration at range of concentrations (40 mg/kg, 400 mg/kg, 800 mg/kg and 1600 mg/kg). Survival, hematological, organ coefficients, and histopathology studies were performed to establish the DAS toxicity in mice. Stability studies performed in vitro by HPLC showed rapid and time dependent changes in DAS area. A single oral dose upto 1600 mg/kg was well tolerated in mice without any significant changes in standard toxicological parameters. No death was recorded at the tested concentrations. Also no significant changes in the organ coefficient were observed when compared to vehicle treated and sham control. Mild alterations in liver pathology and hematological changes were observed post 1600 mg/kg DAS administration orally. This study demonstrates that single oral administration (upto 1600 mg/kg) of DAS is within the safe limits with no observable adverse effects in mice. Based on the safety profile of DAS, we conclude that DAS can be further explored for use in humans as a potential radiomitigator

    Leh-Ladakh falls in the category of a high-altitude region with low oxygen, low atmospheric pressure and lack of moisture in the air, thus rendering the climate harsh. Therefore, humans staying in this region need different diets, nutrient levels, and other health supplements compared to low-lander people to thrive under these stressful conditions. Chicken meat and eggs have high biological value proteins that play an important role in nutrient supply in human diets. Among them, Kadaknath chicken meat is very famous for its nutritious brown and greyish-black flesh. Its meat contains more protein, less cholesterol and less fat. Its flesh is also known for its various medicinal properties, so it is very popular among health-conscious people. However, fresh chicken production at high-altitude is very limited due to stressful conditions, making poultry rearing very difficult and uneconomical. Kadaknath is an Indian breed of chicken from the Jhabua region of Madhya Pradesh known for its hardy nature to thrive in any harsh environment. Therefore, the Kadaknath breed can be a good choice for high-altitude due to its hardy nature and disease-resistant ability. Hence, Kadaknath chicken meat can prove to be a superfood in high-altitude and such remote regions, especially during the acclimatization period. We have recently started working on the propagation of Kadaknath chicken among the farmers of Ladakh and evaluating their meat quality and medicinal value. The present review focuses on the scope of Kadaknath chicken at Leh-Ladakh under backyard farming, its acceptance, and the advantage of its meat in providing complete nutrition to human consumers

    Design and Development of Modular Customised Ration Storage System Silo for Service Specific Applications during Peak Winters at High Altitude Area

    Conceptualisation of design and development of modular and customised ration storage system for Army rations sustainable up to -40°C was carried out. The Indian Armed Forces operate under various climatic conditions, which are inhospitable for cooking, storing fresh/perishable food products and carrying rations for their survival during an emergency. Hence, there was an ever-existent demand for a customised, user-friendly ration storage system. Considering a number of user-friendly features, a system has been designed comprising modular unit structures with insulated wall panels containing Polyurethane foam (PUF) sandwiched between metallic and composite material claddings. An insulated structure is required to maintain the temperature at high altitudes during extreme low-temperature conditions. The temperature and humidity are regulated and maintained using solar panels and humidly modulators. The modular structure with individual temperature and humidity control is suitable for the safe storage and preservation of fresh produce, fruits and vegetables, and milk and animal products. In case of perishable commodities of Defense supplies inclusive of leafy and tender vegetables, juicy fresh fruits, egg, chocolates, meat carcasses stored in silo are safe as its insulated structure ensures no freezing even upto -25° Celsius hence protects them from quality damage due to subzero temperature exposure and abuse. Therefore, the normal convention of the expected shelf life for each such commodity was extended approximately double the normal shelf life expected. An extensive design process involving CAD modelling followed by mechanical load simulation and analysis resulted in a robust and capable system. Each compartmentalised segment caters for an average one-ton material depending on the nature of the material. The system is suitable to store 3 tons of ration at a time to address the requirement of 100 individuals for 60 days in monsoon cut off and peak winter cut-off posts. Total energy consumption under fully load condition is approx. 2KW to maintain peak temperature gradient of 45-50°C.The outer surface of the structure can be camouflaged. The well-insulated structure ensures zero leakage and is sturdy to withstand a wind velocity of 60 km per hour and a standing snow load of 2 meters above it

    Effect of Allium Sativum on the Alcohol Induced Neuropathic Pain in Wistar Rats

    Neuropathic pain is a severe pain condition associated with pathological changes which have deleterious effects like dysfunction of the brain. Alcohol abuse is known to be the most common reason at present for developing neuropathic pain. Alcohol-induced neuropathic pain can be assessed by ache studies such as hyperalgesia and allodynia which characterizes the response severity of induced pain. In the current research, we used the Allium Sativum (Garlic) bulb extract to study the effect on alcohol-administered rodents. The behavioral and biochemical studies have been done. It has been reported in the study, that Allium sativum has certain protective mechanisms such as analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, free radical scavenger, and antioxidant effects which contribute to alcohol-induced neuropathic pain. Based on the results of the current investigation, it can be concluded that Allium sativum bulb extract, administered at doses of 200 and 300 mg/kg in 0.9 per cent saline, is helpful in reducing the symptoms of alcoholic neuropathy. Allium sativum may offer a protective effect in the revocation of alcoholic-induced neuropathic pain

    Variation in Antioxidant Activity and Antioxidant Constituents of Ocimum basilicum Linn with the Maturity of Plant Grown in Open Field and Inside Polyhouse Conditions

    The variation in antioxidant activity and antioxidant constituents of different plant growth stages i.e. in every 15 day’s interval till maturity of plant of Ocimum basilicum Linn. grown in an open field and inside polyhouse conditions was studied. The correlation between antioxidant constituents and antioxidant activities was also studied. The result revealed that the 90 days old plant grown in an open field condition exhibited maximum antioxidant activity with the lowest IC50/EC50 value by ABTS (0.064 mg/ml), DPPH (0.090 mg/ml), and FRAP (0.099 mg/ml) followed by 75 days and 60 days old plants, similar pattern was also observed in their antioxidant constituents. Similarly, the 90 days old plant grown inside polyhouse condition showed maximum antioxidant activity with antioxidant constituents followed by other plant growth stages in descending order. The chlorophyll content was found maximum in 15 days old plant(0.926 mg/100g) grown in an open field condition, whereas the maximum chlorophyll content (1.470 mg/100g) exhibited by 90 days old plant grown inside polyhouse condition. The correlation analysis revealed that the antioxidant constituents exhibited a significant negative correlation with the IC50/EC50 value and the IC50 value of ABTS assay had a significantly positive correlation with the IC50 and EC50 value of DPPH and FRAP assay, respectively. Hence, the study revealed that the leaves extract of plant grown in open field conditions possesses a significantly higher antioxidant activity and antioxidant constituents than the plant grown inside polyhouse condition

    Performance Evaluation of Cabbage Cultivars under Open Field Cultivation in High Altitude of Tawang Arunachal Pradesh

    The study has been undertaken to evaluate the performance of locally available commercial cultivars of cabbage in open field during summer season of 2019 at Defence Research Laboratory Research and Development Centre Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh). The commercial cultivars of these vegetables were evaluated based on the growth parameters and their yield performance under open field with paired row system of planting. It was found that the cultivar Green Express performance was outstanding among test edcultivars and it superseded cv. Royal Ball BC-51 and cv. Blue Jayes in terms of growth parameters as well as marketable yield (2.62 kg/m2) and biological yield (3.47 kg/m2). The cv. Royal Ball BC-86 was also found next best performing cultivar after cv. Green Express as former was at par with growth and yield parameter and harvest maturity of later. The head of cv. Green express attended harvest maturity (149.25 days) approximately one week earlier as compared to cv. Blue Jayes (155.0 days). However, the productivity of cultivars Green Express and Royal Ball BC-86 was found within the range of national average, therefore, these two cultivars could be recommended for the commercial cultivation with paired row system of planting under open field cultivation during summer season in high altitude areas of Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh)

    Isolation and Characterisation of Urease Producing Bacteria and their Capacity to Precipitate Calcium Carbonate

    The current study was designed to isolate and characterize urease-producing bacteria and to assess their ability to precipitate calcium carbonate. Total eight bacteria were isolated from dung-rich soil samples collected from Dakor, Gujarat. Out of these, two bacterial strains designated as DGDK-3 and DGDK-4 were found to produce a considerable level of urease in the initial screening on the urea agar medium. Based on morphological and physiological tests and more specifically by 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis, these bacteria were identified as Quasibacillus sp. Strain DGDK-3 and Bacillus sp. Strain DGDK-4. The strains DGDK-3 and DGDK-4 showed 25 IU/ml and 89 IU/ml urease activity, respectively. Also, the efficacy of both strains was tested for calcium carbonate precipitation. Results showed that both the isolates were competent to precipitate a significant level of calcium carbonate. The current work demonstrated that urease-producing bacteria can be utilised in bio-cementationas a crack sealing agent and as a natural stabilizing agent
