Investigation of the Effect of Ski Jump on the Flow Dynamics around Generic Aircraft Carrier
The landing operation on an aircraft carrier is a complicated and risky process. Unlike land-based operations, the landing area available on carriers is in continuous motion in all the six degrees of freedom. The ski jump, flight deck, hull, and superstructure of the carrier interact with the oncoming wind’s flow-field which creates a turbulent airflow behind the carrier. This ‘burble effect’ is very dangerous and has caused various mishaps in the past. To complement the work being undertaken at IIT Delhi to study the flow dynamics in the carrier environment, the present study investigates the effect of ski jump and superstructure on the flow around the generic aircraft carrier (GAC). Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies are undertaken to simulate the airwake and establish a baseline with the ski jump. Subsequently, further studies are carried out to analyse the sensitivity of the wake to changes in carrier geometry. The introduction of the ski generates a major proportion of turbulence encountered in the aft by the approaching pilot. This is reduced significantly by optimising ski jump geometry in various ways
Experimental Investigations on The Effect of Tungsten Content on the Machining Behaviour of Tungsten Heavy Alloys
The present work attempts to assess the machinability of tungsten heavy alloys (WHAs) with varying tungsten content in terms of different machining characteristics such as chip thickness, material removal rate, cutting force and surface roughness under varied cutting conditions. The feed rate is found to have major influence on the machining characteristics; whereas the effect of rake angle appears to be marginal. With increase in W content both cutting force and material removal rate increase whereas surface roughness decreases. Since WHAs are difficult to machine, an additional objective of the study is to optimize machining parameters. An optimal balance of the experimental cutting parameters using Grey relational analysis has been achieved, which can be effectively employed for the machining of the alloys with close dimensional tolerances and desirable surface finish
Comparative Performance of New Surface Roughness Element and Pin fin in Converging Channel for Gas Turbine Application
Thermal performance of a novel surface roughness element, named as Double 45 Dimple (D45D), is compared with pin-fin element in a converging channel with rectangular cross section and presented. The Surface Roughness Element (SRE) is derived by combining protrusion & dimple in a particular fashion such that area available for transfer of heat increases. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the applicability of D45D element channel for trailing edge channel of a typical nozzle guide vane where typically pin-fin element is used. New cooling configuration of Nozzle Guide Vane (NGV) with D45D element is also proposed. All thermal and flow related results are derived using validated CFD approach with EARSM turbulence model for a typical value of Reynolds number. From this investigation, it is found that D45D element provides remarkable improvement in the averaged as well as heat transfer in local region for the corresponding surface which makes it a candidate for trailing edge channel cooling application
New Quantum and LCD Codes over Finite Fields of Even Characteristic
For an integer m ≥ 1, we study cyclic codes of length l over a commutative non-chain ring F2m + uF2m , where u2 = u . With a new Gray map and Euclidean dual-containing cyclic codes, we provide many new and superior codes to the best-known quantum error-correcting codes. Also, we characterise LCD codes of length l with respect to their generator polynomials and prove that F2m − image of an LCD code of length l is an LCD code of length 2l . Finally, we provide several optimal LCD codes from the Gray images of LCD codes over F2m + uF2m .

Data Acquisition System for Chemical Iodine Generation Suitable for Flowing Medium Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser
Development of infrared flowing medium lasers needs to be envisaged in a manner that practical aspects such as system compactness, short readiness time, low system size, weight and power are met to make them field deployable. In this context, the critical aspect of in-situ production of lasing species (Iodine) in Chemical Oxygen Iodine Lasers (COIL), one of the most potent flowing medium lasers, has been investigated. The paper dwells on chemical generation of iodine and its precise flow and parameter control by implementing a customised Data Acquisition System (DAS). Iodine is generated in a chemical reaction of Cuprous Iodide (CuI) with chlorine. This is achieved by precisely controlled flow of chlorine diluted with a carrier gas (N2 ) in a ratio of 1:2. DAS includes regulated gas feed, accurate thermal stabilisation, relevant diagnostics and implementation of necessary safety interlocks in a real time operation scenario for establishing the system efficacy and scalability. The studies have demonstrated chemically generated iodine flow rate of ~ 1.2 mmol.s-1 for Cl2 flow rate of ~3 mmol.s-1 all measured in real time using the developed DAS with a conversion efficiency of 80%. Developed I2 supply system has potential to deliver iodine on demand with required flow rates, measurement uncertainty of ~ 4.5 percent and advantages of smaller specific weight and size with reduced system readiness time and electrical power supply using DAS system with adequate safety interlocks
Beam Splitting Planar Inverted F Antenna For 5G Communication
A planar inverted-F antenna with symmetrical split beams and loaded with radio frequency absorbers (here Eccosorb MCS) for 5G communication is proposed. The multi-beam antennas reduce the requirement of number of antennas and provide wide coverage. But they require a complex system such as a phased array or MIMO antennas. On the other hand, multi-beam antennas do not have such requirements. In this work, we propose a PIFA antenna which achieves multi-beam behaviour by six slabs of absorbers placed periodically between the PIFA patch and substrate to split the beams into two directions at +26°. The proposed antenna obtains a frequency band of 24.2- 25.7 GHz and achieves a high gain of approximately 10 dB at +26°. The performance of the proposed antenna is suitable for G communication. All simulations of the antenna are carried out using Ansys HFSS. The design was validated by simulations and later confirmed with measurements.

Quantified Static Recovery Trend of Constricted Jogs of Aluminium Alloys During Annealing
The static recovery of dislocations in aluminium alloys is known to observe during re-heating and inter-annealing of aluminium alloys, so that the fully recrystallised and partially recrystallised grain structures are deliberated respectively for a judicious control on their final tempering of strength, ductility, toughness and crystallographic texture to eliminate the earing related problems. An elaborate physical based static recovery simulator is required to address the trend of dislocation recovery during the time of industrial annealing to evaluate the extent of discontinuously and continuously developed recrystallised aluminium alloys. New industrial annealing practices to develop an extensively wide range of aluminium alloys with the medium to low stacking fault energy range, suitable for their plenty of use in defence vehicles, inevitably demand quantified dislocation density, the decisive element of flow strength. The formulated static recovery rate of the constricted dislocation jogs increases with the stacking fault energy and increases with the industrial annealing temperature. The formulated static recovery of dislocations is found to be very precise and concentric to address the process and materials characteristics, so that it would be liable to define the minute change in the processing temperature, i.e. 50K
Distinguishing Lightweight Block Ciphers in Encrypted Images
Modern day lightweight block ciphers provide powerful encryption methods for securing IoT communication data. Tiny digital devices exchange private data which the individual users might not be willing to get disclosed. On the other hand, the adversaries try their level best to capture this private data. The first step towards this is to identify the encryption scheme. This work is an effort to construct a distinguisher to identify the cipher used in encrypting the traffic data. We try to establish a deep learning based method to identify the encryption scheme used from a set of three lightweight block ciphers viz. LBlock, PRESENT and SPECK. We make use of images from MNIST and fashion MNIST data sets for establishing the cryptographic distinguisher. Our results show that the overall classification accuracy depends firstly on the type of key used in encryption and secondly on how frequently the pixel values change in original input image
Sensitivity Analysis of the Turning Motion of an Underwater Glider on the Viscous Hydrodynamic Coefficients
Autonomous underwater gliders (AUG) are a class of underwater vehicles that move using a buoyancy engine and forces from wings. Gliders execute turning motion with the help of a rudder or an internal roll control mechanism and the trajectory of the turn is a spiral. This paper analyses the sensitivity of the characteristics of spiral manoeuvre on the hydrodynamic coefficients of the glider. Based on the dynamics model of a gliding fish whose turn is enabled by a rudder, the effect of hydrodynamic coefficients of the hull and the rudder on the spiral motion are quantified. Local sensitivity analysis is undertaken using the indirect method. The order of importance of hydrodynamic coefficients is evaluated. It is observed that the spiral path parameters are most sensitive to the side force created by the rudder and the effect of the drag coefficient is predominant to that of the lift coefficients. This study will aid in quantifying the effect of change of geometry on the manoeuvrability of AUGs
