International audienceSoil is an essential part of the Earth continental surface, but it is submitted to a multitude of threats. The associated degradation is at risk for human being and ecosystems. That is why the integration of soil in spatial planning and design is essential. Spatial planners and designers however usually lack knowledge on soils. In addition, soils are not directly considered in current sectorial regulations. The European soil monitoring law should help increase awareness on soils and promote the use of the various tools and methods already developed to qualify soils. To fill the lack of tools to help planners and designers find out the right soil tools/methods to answer their needs along their process, the EU funded SPADES project is developing a webtool called Navigator. The objective of this abstract is to present the users’ need analysis to the soil community to get its feedback as a target group of the soil-planner Navigator. The users’ needs analysis is based on meetings with stakeholders from the pilots involved in the SPADES project, on a taskforce of stakeholders from the SPADES pilots and other volunteers. National and international events are also opportunities to interact directly with professionals and experts
Design of a Compact Harmonic-Suppressed Rat-Race Coupler With Ultra-Broad Rejection Band
International audienceThis paper presents a novel approach to design a compact circular rat-race coupler with an ultrawide stopband, with the aim to reduce its size whilemaintaining performance. The design methodology begins with a common miniaturization technique to replace the conventional quarter-wavelength transmission line with an equivalent low-pass filter loaded with parallel coupled line and radial stubs. Since the latter leads to produce higher order harmonics, parasitic open-ended stubs are then properly introduced in the structure not only to overcome the issue but also to produce controllable transmission zeros. A versatile analytical model is also developed taking into account manufacturing restrictions, which makes it possible to extract the physical parameters of the coupler unit-cell for a given desired compactness percentage with respect to the conventional rat-race coupler. A prototypeis fabricated and measured to validate the design, demonstrating the predicted behavior fairly achieved by numerical analysis. A significant size reductionof about 86.1% was achieved compared to the conventional design, while effectively suppressing higher order modes up to 23.4 GHz (including the 13th harmonic based on |S11|>−5 dB and |S21|<−17 dB) with high isolation level (|S41|<−17 dB) between the ports
A photo-resistant yeast strain used to control potential bacterial contamination in microalgae cultivated withinphotobioreactors
International audienceIntroductionSome recent studies have highlighted the potential of yeast/microalgae interactions to improve biomassproductivities or qualities. While some microalgae can be cultivated heterotrophically, the focus of much researchis on their photosynthetic capacities, which enable eco-responsible processes.Even in closed, high-volume photobioreactors, axenic strains of microalgae are not immune to bacterialcontamination. The release of organic matter by healthy cells can be stimulated by stresses induced during theoperation of the reactor. This can enable the growth of potential microbial contaminants. Therefore, the workinghypothesis is to verify whether Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells can be acclimatised to consume the organic matterreleased by microalgae. The aim is to prevent the growth of microbial contaminants in microalgae cultures.Material and MethodsAxenic strains of Chlorella sorokiniana UTEX 1230 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae are cultivated in BG11 and YTGmedia, respectively, under conditions of either darkness or light [150 μmoles quanta m-2. s-1]. The survival of theyeasts in the mineral medium is compared to that in different organic media, including microalgal supernatants.Successive illuminated subcultures under oligotrophic conditions are used to isolate photo-resistant strains. The coculturingof yeasts and microalgae within a 3 L photobioreactor allows for precise control over various parameters(pH, temperature, partial pressure of oxygen, dissolved organic carbon…). Challenge tests are performed to assessthe impact of yeast on the growth of specific bacteria.ResultsIncubating wild-type S. cerevisiae cells under a light flux in mineral media results in a rapid loss of viability. Thisphototoxicity is partially alleviated when the yeast cells are transferred to YFP-derived media, or to the supernatant ofmicroalgal cultures. An evolutionary engineering approach is used to isolate a strain exhibing stable light resistance.Its behaviour in the presence of microalgae in a photobioreactor is analysed. Some challenge tests confirm theyeast’s protective properties. The data obtained are compared with those from other published studies on yeast/microalgae co-cultures
