    No full text
International audienceNational environmental protection policies implemented in the field have an impact on complex systems such as territories. Management plans for protected areas provide guidelines but do not always directly address this question. How do these management systems change the areas concerned and how could integrating the landscape in them improve outcomes? We drew on an action research experiment to identify how protection policies are implemented in two sensitive natural areas and heritage sites in Maine-et-Loire. These sites are unique in that both their biodiversity and their landscapes are protected. This context allowed us to test the effectiveness of combining different areas of expertise and revealed the difficulty of developing a regional project that takes into consideration a variety of socio-ecological and spatiotemporal issues. In the areas studied, where stakeholders come from different professional backgrounds and have different attitudes to nature, it is difficult to explain the relevance of using the landscape to develop management systems. We will see that this approach offers the possibility of moving beyond a strictly regulatory or technical framework to identify how management choices can be implemented on sites in accordance with their spatial aspects and existing uses and based on a plan taking these uses into consideration.

Long-term thermo-mechanical behaviour of an energy pile installed in clay: Field experiments and numerical simulations

    No full text
International audienceThis study investigates the long-term thermo-mechanical behaviour of an energy pile installed in clay using field experiments and numerical simulations, aiming both to understand its response under sustained mechanical loads and cyclic thermal loading, and to develop a novel numerical model that can provide practical guidance for the design of energy piles. Firstly, full-scale experiments were performed on energy piles (0.42 m in diameter and 12 m in length) subjected to constant axial loads combined with three or five cyclic thermal loads. One pile was loaded to 30 % of its bearing capacity, and another to 50 %. Under these constant axial loads, the piles were subjected to several thermal loading cycles. Mechanical loading was finally applied to these piles after thermal cycles. A third pile was only mechanically loaded until the pile’s bearing capacity was reached. Results for the pile temperature and axial strain, pile head displacement, and axial load are shown. Secondly, a numerical model was developed based on a one-dimensional nonlinear finite element approach to investigate the long-term thermomechanical behaviour. This model was validated against the experimental results. It was then used to simulate 30 thermal cycles, revealing that the irreversible settlement of the pile head increases with higher axial loads, and that the first thermal cycle induces the largest irreversible settlement

    No full text

Interpretation of electrical instability for polycrystalline silicon vertical TFT

    No full text
International audienceDue to its excellent electrical performance and compatibility with CMOS processing, polycrystalline silicon TFT has been applied in AMOLED display backplane. As short channel length can potentially benefit current density and cutoff frequency, polycrystalline silicon vertical TFT can be applied in conventional 2-transistor and 1-capcitor (2T1C) pixel unit. The fabrication of polycrystalline silicon vertical TFT was introduced, and the electrical characteristics of the fabricated device was demonstrated. Thereafter, the electrical parameters of the vertical TFT were analyzed and compared under different electrical stress durations, which interprets the inherent mechanism of the stress instability. The total density of states (DOS) and interface DOS of the fabricated devices also indicate that the stress instability is due to charge trapping in gate dielectric layer. The electrical instability is simulated by using high-k gate dielectric layer, and the reduced electrical field in the gate dielectric layer can potentially improve the electrical stability. Finally, 2T1C configuration of AMOLED pixel unit shows the influence of gate dielectric layer on the stress stability, the TFTs with high-k gate dielectric layer shows higher stress stability and lower error rate of OLED current

A Circular Manufacturing Systems Dashboard for Sus-tainable Performance Measurements

    No full text
International audienceSocial and ecological concerns are part of modern production systems. Circular Manufacturing Systems (CMS), which aim to extend the life of second-hand products through industrial processes such as disassembly, reworking, and reas-sembly, support circular economy principles by preserving the value of products and components, beyond mere raw material recycling. CMS face specific barri-ers, including variable quality and processing times, product-specific flows, and complex tasks requiring experienced operators. These human-intensive produc-tion systems are highly demanding from a biomechanical and cognitive point of view. In CMS, preserving the health of operators and supporting their expertise is key to performance. Moreover, monitoring CMS performance in real time is challenging due to the need to integrate operational, environmental, and social di-mensions. While some studies propose Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for CMS, few address human-related aspects. This article applies a performance dashboard construction methodology to identify a set of operational, environmen-tal, and human-centered KPIs for real-time monitoring. It also discusses how per-formance should be defined in CMS and the ethical considerations of tracking human-related indicators

HVAC filters clogging detection using electrospun sensory membrane

International audienceClogged air filters increase pressure drop, thereby raising energy consumption in heating ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Monitoring this pressure drop enables real-time detection of clogging. This study focuses on developing a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) membrane designed for strain sensing to be used as a pressure drop sensor in ventilation systems. TPU nanofiber membranes were electrospun into a honeycomb structure to minimize the pressure drop caused by the sensor itself, with a carbon sensor ink printed in a zigzag pattern to enable signal detection. Structured collectors with porous honeycomb patterns were used during electrospinning to create these honeycombed membranes. The effect of honeycomb hole size (0.5 cm and 1.5 cm, with corresponding membranes labeled TPU-0.5 and TPU-1.5) on electrical resistance and pressure drop was assessed in a lab-scale ventilation tunnel at various airflow velocities representative of those used in HVAC systems. The TPU-0.5 membrane showed higher sensitivity ( ΔR / R up to 28%) but resulted in a significantly higher-pressure drop compared to the TPU-1.5 membrane (134.3 ± 7.6 Pa vs. 34.0 ± 2.4 Pa at 3.83 m s −1 ). Cyclic testing revealed resistance drift, indicating the need for stabilization cycles to ensure consistent results. The findings indicate that the TPU-1.5 membrane achieves a better balance between sensitivity (10%–15% resistance change at 3.83 m s −1 of velocity) and pressure drop (maximum 32–38 Pa at 3.83 m s −1 of velocity), making it more suitable for real-world applications in air handling units, particularly for monitoring filter clogging
