Evaluation of a Power Management Strategy for Autonomous Cyber-Physical Systems with Real-Time Constraints
International audienceDesigning Energy Harvesting Cyber-Physical Systems (EH CPS) with real-time capabilities requires a sophisticated approach that integrates energy aware scheduling policies, predictive modeling, and dynamic task allocation. By effectively managing energy resources, these systems can adopt an energy neutral behavior: they ensure perpetual operation under real-time requirements even in environments with intermittent energy availability. In response to this challenge, this paper introduces the Extended Earliest Deadline First with Harvesting (EED-H) algorithm, a novel scheduling and power management framework. The EED-H algorithm employs an energyaware prioritization mechanism, dynamically adjusting job execution based on real-time assessments of available energy, slack energy, and slack time. This adaptive approach not only ensures that jobs meet their deadlines but also optimizes energy utilization during periods of scarcity. By addressing the critical challenges of energy management in CPS, the EED-H algorithm paves the way for more resilient and efficient self-sustaining devices. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces the deadline missing rate by 37% when compared to the well known Earliest Deadline First scheduler.</div

International audienceIn 2019, an excavation carried out by the Calvados archaeological department in the Vimont peat bog uncovered remains dating from the Late Prehistoric period to the Modern Era, including a group of peat-cutting pits from the 13th–14th centuries. Following the construction of a channel during the Early Middle Ages—very likely linked to the installation of a mill—the peat layers filling the marsh began to be exploited from the 11th century onward. The archaeological evidence, when compared with the archives of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Martin de Troarn, sheds light on the practices of this activity, which was largely conducted by the monks. Winged spades were used—a tool model imported from Flanders by Norman monks at the end of the 13th century—which continued to be used in northwestern Europe up to the 19th century. Dried peat blocks served as a valued fuel, likely employed in the smoking of the thousands of eels recorded in the monastery’s rent accounts.
