Computing the weighted neighbor isolated tenacity of interval graphs in polynomial time
Weighted graphs in graph theory are created by weighing different values depending on the importance of connections or centers in a graph model. Networks can be modeled with graphs such that the devices and centers correspond to the vertices and connections correspond to the edges. In these networks, weight can be assigned to the vertices for the workload and importance of the devices and centers, so that planning such as security and cost can be made in advance in the design of the network. Network reliability and security is an important issue in the computing area. There are several parameters for vulnerability measurement values of these networks modeled with graphs. We recommend the weighted conversion of the neighbor isolated tenacity parameter for this topic. It is known that tenacity, which is the basis of this parameter, is NP-hard. But polynomial solutions can be created in interval graphs, which is a special graph from the perfect graph class. In this article, polynomial time algorithm is given to calculate weighted neighbor isolated tenacity of the interval graphs
Silene nemrutensis (Caryophyllaceae), a new species from south-eastern Anatolia
A new perennial species, Silene nemrutensis (Silene sect. Spergulifoliae, Caryophyllaceae), is described and illustrated from SE-Anatolia. A macromorphological comparison with the similar species S. arguta is given as well as the ultrastructure of the seeds and pollen grains. Original photographs, geographical distribution, habitat and IUCN conservation status are also provided
Spirituality and religion in pain and pain management
Pain relief is a management problem for many patients, their families, and the medical professionals caring for them. Although everyone experiences pain to some degree, responses to it vary from one person to another. Recognizing and specifying someone else's pain is clinically a well know challenge. Research on the biology and neurobiology of pain has given us a relationship between spirituality and pain. There is growing recognition that persistent pain is a complex and multidimensional experience stemming from the interrelations among biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors. Patients with pain use a number of cognitive and behavioral strategies to cope with their pain, including religious/spiritual factors, such as prayers, and seeking spiritual support to manage their pain. This article provides an overview of the complex phenomenon of pain, with a focus on spiritual and religious issues in pain management
Tremor, gait, and balance disorders in essential tremor and the efficacy of atenolol
Background: To assess gait and balance in patients with essential tremor (ET), which is the most common tremor disorder characterized by bilateral action tremor of the hands with possible involvement of further tremor locations and to test the efficacy of atenolol on tremor and gait and balance. Methods: In this prospective study, gait and balance were evaluated by static posturography in addition to International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale (ICARS) in 22 ET patients without any additional neurologic signs on examination. Tremor severity was assessed by The Essential Tremor Rating Assessment Scale (TETRAS). The efficacy of atenolol 100 mg/day both on tremor and gait and balance was investigated. Posturographic recordings were performed in gender, age-, and height-matched healthy volunteers who constituted the control group. Results: The mean center of gravity sway velocity of the ET patients recorded on firm and foam surfaces with eyes open and closed was not significantly different from the healthy controls but sway velocity on tandem stance was significantly increased (P = 0.032). Gait speed (P = 0.015) was decreased and step width was increased (P = 0.001). An improvement in TETRAS scores was recorded with atenolol treatment (P = 0.046). An improvement not reaching statistical significance was present in ICARS scores (P = 0.059). However, posturographic parameters did not change significantly (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Increased sway velocity on tandem stance, decreased gait speed and increased step width are consistent with midline cerebellar dysfunction in ET patients with no obvious gait and balance deficits on clinical examination. Atenolol seems to be effective on tremor but does not cause a significant improvement in gait and balance deficits
Comparison of brucellar and tuberculous spondylodiscitis patients: results of the multicenter Backbone-1 Study
BACKGROUND CONTEXT: No direct comparison between brucellar spondylodiscitis (BSD) and tuberculous spondylodiscitis (TSD) exists in the literature. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare directly the clinical features, laboratory and radiological aspects, treatment, and outcome data of patients diagnosed as BSD and TSD. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective, multinational, and multicenter study was used. PATIENT SAMPLE: A total of 641 (TSD, 314 and BSD, 327) spondylodiscitis patients from 35 different centers in four countries (Turkey, Egypt, Albania, and Greece) were included. OUTCOME MEASURES: The pre- and peri- or post-treatment spinal deformity and neurologic deficit parameters, and mortality were carried out. METHODS: Brucellar spondylodiscitis and TSD groups were compared for demographics, clinical, laboratory, radiological, surgical interventions, treatment, and outcome data. The Student t test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for group comparisons. Significance was analyzed as two sided and inferred at 0.05 levels. RESULTS: The median baseline laboratory parameters including white blood cell count, C-reactive protein, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were higher in TSD than BSD (p<.0001). Prevertebral, paravertebral, epidural, and psoas abscess formations along with loss of vertebral corpus height and calcification were significantly more frequent in TSD compared with BSD (p<.01). Surgical interventions and percutaneous sampling or abscess drainage were applied more frequently in TSD (p<.0001). Spinal complications including gibbus deformity, kyphosis, and scoliosis, and the number of spinal neurologic deficits, including loss of sensation, motor weakness, and paralysis were significantly higher in the TSD group (p<.05). Mortality rate was 2.22% (7 patients) in TSD, and it was 0.61% (2 patients) in the BSD group (p=.1). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study show that TSD is a more suppurative disease with abscess formation requiring surgical intervention and characterized with spinal complications. We propose that using a constellation of constitutional symptoms (fever, back pain, and weight loss), pulmonary involvement, high inflammatory markers, and radiological findings will help to differentiate between TSD and BSD at an early stage before microbiological results are available. Effect of hot and cold applications on elbow proprioception
BACKGROUND: Purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cold application (CA) and hot application (HA) on elbow proprioception in healthy volunteers. CA and HA were applied locally during 15 minutes on the elbow joint and the effect was measured after that. METHODS: A repeated-measure design with 6 (2x3) randomly assigned test conditions: 1) no application on 30 degrees angle; 2) after HA on 30 degrees angle; 3) after CA on 30 degrees angle; 4) no application on 60 degrees angle; 5) after HA on 60 degrees angle and 6) after CA on 60 degrees angle. A total of 82 healthy volunteers (35 women, 47 men) whose ages ranged between 18 and 28 years (20.93 +/- 2.13) were included in the study. Proprioception of the elbow was measured by using a digital goniometer with the technique of active joint position sense at the beginning of the study. The tests were repeated at weekly intervals after applying cold or hot in mixed order. Two target angles were defined 30 and 60 degrees of elbow flexion. RESULTS: Reproduction errors were significantly decreased following HA in both target angles (P<0.017). Following CA, significantly increased reproduction error was found only in 30-degree target angle (P<0.017). CONCLUSIONS: We obtained increased elbow proprioception following HA, which means increased proprioceptive acuity of the elbow but a decrease following CA in healthy volunteers. These findings may be useful in prevention and treatment of sports injuries, if supported by future studies
Which Implant Is Better for Treating Reverse Obliquity Fractures of the Proximal Femur: A Standard or Long Nail?
Reverse obliquity fractures of the proximal femur have biomechanical characteristics distinct from other intertrochanteric fractures and high implant failure rate when treated with sliding hip screws. Intramedullary hip nailing for these fractures reportedly has less potential for cut-out of the lag screw because of their loadbearing capacity when compared with extramedullary implants. However, it is unclear whether nail length influences healing. We compared standard and long types of intramedullary hip nails in terms of (1) reoperation (fixation failure), (2) 1-year mortality rate, (3) function and mobility, and (4) union rate. We conducted a pilot prospective randomized controlled trial comparing standard versus long (a parts per thousand yen 34 cm) intramedullary hip nails for reverse obliquity fractures of the proximal femur from January 2009 to December 2009. There were 15 patients with standard nails and 18 with long nails. Mean age was 79 years (range, 67-95 years). We determined 1-year mortality rates, reoperation rates, Parker-Palmer mobility and Harris hip scores, and radiographic findings (fracture union, blade cut-out, tip-apex distance, implant failure). Minimum followup was 12 months (mean, 14 months; range, 12-20 months). We found no difference in reoperation rates between groups. Two patients (both from the long-nail group) underwent revision surgery because of implant failure in one and deep infection in the other. There was no difference between the standard- and long-nail groups in mortality rate (17% versus 18%), Parker-Palmer mobility score (five versus six), Harris hip score (74 versus 79), union rate (100% in both groups), blade cut-out (zero versus one), and tip-apex distance (22 versus 24 mm). Our preliminary data suggest reverse obliquity fractures of the trochanteric region of the femur can be treated with either standard or long intramedullary nails
Volcanic eruption eye-witnessed and recorded by prehistoric humans
Human footprints in hydrovolcanic ash near cakallar volcano (Kula, Western Turkey) were discovered in 1968. A nearby pictograph interpreted as depicting cakallar volcano would define it as the oldest site where humans demonstrably eye-witnessed a volcanic eruption and possibly artistically recorded it. Despite cakallar's volcanological and cultural importance, its eruption age has remained controversial. Here, two independent dating methods, cosmogenic Cl-36 and combined U-Pb and (U-Th)/He zircon (ZDD) geochronology, yielded the first internally consistent eruption ages controlled by detailed volcanostratigraphic mapping. Concordant Cl-36 ages of 4.7 +/- 0.6 ka (errors 1 sigma) were obtained for a cone-breaching lava flow. ZDD ages for crustal xenoliths from scoria deposits directly overlying the footprints yielded an age of 4.7 +/- 0.7 ka. This firmly places the cakallar eruption and prehistoric human footprints, and plausibly the rock art, into the Bronze Age, reinforcing the notion that prehistoric artwork recorded natural events. Investigation of tribological and mechanical properties Al2O3-SiC reinforced Al composites manufactured by casting or P/M method
In this study, Al based Al2O3 and SiC particle reinforced composite materials were manufactured by casting or P/M method. Tribological properties of these composite materials were investigated by wearing with 10 N load and 50 rpm on a pin-on-disc wear test rig at dry conditions. Mechanical properties were investigated. The effects of reinforce materials on tribological and mechanical properties were investigated. In addition to that microstructure of these materials were investigated by optical and SEMI microscope. Tribological and hardness properties of composites significantly improved by the use of particle reinforced into Al. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier Ltd
