    Why do athletes consume luxury brands? A study on motivations and values from the lens of theory of prestige consumption

    PurposeAlthough extant literature exists on luxury consumption, limited studies have focused on motivation and values to consume luxury brands among athletes. The study aims to uncover the motivations that guide athletes' decision-making processes to consume luxury brands.Design/methodology/approachThe study utilized the theory of prestige consumption to develop a model. The model posits that bandwagon, snob and veblen motivations guide athletes to seek social and conspicuous values in their consumption of luxury brands. A survey-based questionnaire approach was used to collect data from 343 athletes from Turkey by considering brands from different product categories.FindingsFindings indicated that bandwagon and veblen motivations are associated with social and conspicuous values. The findings also suggested that bandwagon, snob and veblen motivation are positively associated with luxury consumption intentions. Also, the social and conspicuous values of athletes determine their intentions to consume luxury. The mediating effects of social and conspicuous values are also confirmed.Originality/valueThe study's findings are first to empirically examine the influence of motivations on social and conspicuous value among athletes. The results show that the luxury consumption motivations of the athletes have a strong role in their intention to purchase luxury products. The findings also offer novel managerial implications

    Determination of the nutrition standard of soil and leaf analysis of Bozcaada Cavusu grape variety grown in Canakkale, Turkey

    Present study was carried out to determine the nutritional standard of Bozcaada Qavusu grape varieties, grown in Canakkale. It was studied on the leaf blade and petiole samples, obtained from 20 vineyards on berry set stage and chosen on the soil samples, taken from 0 to 30 cm and 30 to 60 cm depth. There is no problem with pH, texture, exchangeable calcium, potassium, zinc and copper. Organic matter in all soil samples, phosphorus in 11.1 %, iron in 75 %, manganese in 50 % is inadequate. Nitrogen found was not enough in all leaf petiole sample units 60 % of leaf blade, phosphorus was found not enough in 40 % of leaf blade and in 67 % of leaf petioles. Calcium was also found at enough level in 95 % of leaf blade and in all of leaf petiole samples. The magnesium determined was not enough level in all leaf blade and 70 % of leaf petiole samples. The important negative and positive correlation, at 1 and 5 % levels, were obtained between the content of nutrient elements of soil characteristics and leaf blade and leaf petiole, according to the soil depth. On the other side, the important negative and positive correlation, at I and 5 % levels, were determined between the content of nutrient elements of leaf blades and leaf petioles

    An Interview with Professor David Cook on Islamic Studies

    David Cook is a Professor of religion in the Department of Religious Studies at Rice University, specializing in Islam. He completed his undergraduate degree at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1994. He later received his M.A. degree in 1998 and his Ph.D. degree with the study titled The Beginnings of Islam in Syria during the Umayyad Period, which he prepared under the supervision of Fred Donner, Walter Kaegi, and Patricia Crone from the University of Chicago (Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures) in March 2002. He received most of his training in Arabic and Islamic studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Then he took training in other languages and the research methodology of Islamic studies at the University of Chicago. His areas of specialization include early Islamic history and development, Muslim apocalyptic literature and movements (classical and contemporary), radical Islam, jihad, jihadist movements in Islam such as Salafism, historical astronomy, Judeo-Arabic literature, and West African Islam. This study was prepared as part of an interview with Prof. Cook in July 2022 at Rice University. It covers a number of subjects, including Cook's educational background, his research into Islamic topics, his methodology, and his opinions on Western Islamic literature

    Genetic diversity of Crocus antalyensis B. Mathew (Iridaceae) and a new subspecies from southern Anatolia

    Crocus antalyensis B. Mathew is a bulbous plant endemic to Turkey. It is morphologically variable within the western part of Anatolia. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) marker system was used to detect genetic variation among the Crocus taxa. Twenty-two primer combinations were used to screen for polymorphism among the samples. Genetic variation ranged from 0.44 to 0.69. We demonstrated the efficiency of the AFLP marker system for discriminating between individual C. antalyensis specimens. A high level of genetic variation was present among C. antalyensis specimens collected from different locations in Turkey. We also observed that C. antalyensis subspp. are genetically distinct from their relative Crocus flavus Haw. subsp. dissectus Baytop & B. Mathew. A new subspecies of C. antalyensis B. Mathew from southern Turkey is described. It is characterized by striped outer perianth segments, waist-shaped flowers, and glabrous throat of the perianth. A composite image of the new subspecies is presented

    In manufacturing systems, the cost of stock, which constitutes a significant portion of the total cost, is one of the important costs that has to be dealt with by the managers, The problem of inventory is encountered in cases where accumulation of physical materials is needed for the purpose of meeting the demand of raw materials, work in process and finished goods in a specific period. Work-in-process, between the stages of manufacturing process comes up because of the high rate of flow of raw materials or finished products and insufficient number of labor-machines at work stations, However, work-in-process can be reduced in a manner that does not hinder the process by determining the optimum number of labor-machine according to the process time. Thus, costs of work-in-process become minimum. In this study work in process at a middle-scale shoe factory is investigated, At the manufacturing center, there are five work departments composed of Cutting, Sewing, Hand-leather Working, Assembling and Quality Control-Packing. these In departments there are work in process because of different processing times and insufficient number of labor-machines. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) with backpropagation is used for solving this work-in-process problem, In the study, optimum number of labor-machines at work stations were obtained for work-in-process without hindering the production by considering processing times and flow at these work stations

    We aimed to assess the potential utility of myometrial and cervical elasticity measurement in the diag-nosis of ectopic pregnancy (EP), which could facilitate the diagnosis process. Myometrial and cervical elasticity values were measured in women with EP, women with early intrauterine pregnancy (IP) and non-pregnant women. Transabdominal point shear wave elastography (pSWE) was used for elasticity measurements. A reliability study was performed in 20 patients of the non-pregnant group. Cervical pSWE showed poor reliability and high measurement failure rate; thus, we excluded cervical elasticity assessment from the study. In this study, 32 women with EP, 28 women with early IP and 38 non-pregnant women were enrolled for myometrial elasticity assessment by pSWE. Myometrial elasticity values were statistically significantly lower in EP (8.31 kPa [5.1-27]) and early IP (8.83 kPa [4.5-46.2]) groups than in non-pregnant women (14.85 kPa [5.1-28]) (p = 0.003). How-ever, myometrial pSWE results were not significantly different between EP and early IP groups. In light of this data, quantitative assessment of the uterus elasticity using pSWE does not seem to be an adequate diagnostic method for EP.     Exergy analysis of a vapor-compression refrigeration system with TiO2 nanoadditives in the compressor oil was performed. Two-step method was used for the preparation of nanooil for various solid particle volume fractions between 0% and 1%. Irreversibilities were determined by using the Second law of thermodynamics. It is found that a reduction in total irreversibility is achieved with nano-particle inclusion and it was significant for higher particle volume fraction

    Thermal, Chemical and Mechanical Properties of Regenerated Bacterial Cellulose Coated Cotton Fabric

    Bacterial cellulose is a raw material that is used in many industrial areas such as textile due to its properties and an alternative to plant cellulose whose usage is increasing day by day. In this research, dissolved bacterial cellulose was used as a coating material. After the coating process, samples were immersed in three different coagulation baths to provide regeneration of the coated material. TGA, FTIR, SEM-EDX, air permeability, tensile test, thermal comfort (alambeta), and water vapor transmission (permetest) analyses were carried out to compare the mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties between raw fabric and treated fabrics. Because of chemical analysis, it was observed that the structures are similar to each other. In terms of thermal stability, it has been determined that the samples that have been coated are more durable than the raw fabric. The tensile test revealed that there was a decrease between 15.05% and 41,62% in the strength of coated materials. According to the results of air permeability, alambeta, and permetest, a decrease in air permeability values, an increase in relative water vapor permeability, and thermal conductivity values were observed with the increase of the remaining coating material in the fabric

    Production of porous ceramic from clinoptilolite incorporating aluminum powder

    In this study, production of porous ceramic from clinoptilolite incorporating aluminum powder at various sintering temperatures was investigated. The mixtures were sintered at 1150, 1200, 1250 and 1300 degrees C for 1 h in air atmosphere. SEM and XRD analyzes were conducted to observe the microstructural evolution and the phase composition, respectively. The DSC/TG analyzes of the clinoptilolite and aluminum powder mixture indicated that 1150 degrees C was a significant temperature at which oxidation of molten aluminum enhanced and the softening of the clinoptilolite began. The progress in oxidation of aluminum with increasing temperature led to corundum phase crystallization while the amount of cristobalite decreased. Aluminum distribution in the ceramic matrix began at 1200 degrees C but pore channels with very smooth surfaces were obtained at 1250 degrees C. At this temperature, the pores interconnected to each other had narrow pore size distribution (4-180 pm) with low friction coefficient of 0.64 resulting from enhanced corundum phase formation in the structure. Results showed that the porous ceramic sintered at 1250 degrees C with 32.8% apparent porosity and a pure water permeability of similar to 2050 L/ (m(2).hr.bar) promises great potential for use as a filtering media and/or support
