Effects of esmolol on hemodynamic responses to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation in diabetic versus non-diabetic patients
Aim: We aimed to investigate the efficiency of esmolol, a short-acting 8-blocker, in preventing the hemodynamic response to laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation in diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: Eighty diabetic or non-diabetic patients with ASA physical status I-II scheduled for noncardiac surgery were included in this study. They were divided randomly into 4 groups (Non-diabetic control: NDC, Non-diabetic esmolol: NDE, Diabetic control: DC, Diabetic esmolol: DE). Blood glucose analyses were measured in the preoperative period and at the 10(th) min of the study. Prior to anesthetic induction, 1 mg/kg esmolol to Groups NDE and DE and saline to Groups NDC and DC were administered in 1 min by slow infusion. After 2 mins, systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressures (SBP, DBP), heart rate (HR), bispectral index (BIS) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SPO2) were recorded in all groups. Laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation were performed after induction. SBP, DBP, HR, SPO2 and BIS values were recorded every minute during 10 mins after intubation. Results: In Groups NDE and DE, SBP, DBP and HR values were significantly lower after drug administration than the values obtained before drug administration (p < 0.05). In Groups NDC, NDE and DC, SBP, DBP and HR values were significantly higher in the first minute of the intubation compared to before drug administration (p < 0.05), but were significantly low in subsequent measurements (p < 0.05). Blood glucose analyses were found significantly higher in Group NDE than Group NDC (p < 0.05). Conclusions: We propose that esmolol might be used effectively to control hemodynamic response to tracheal intubation in diabetic patients. We also determined that esmolol causes no difference in blood glucose levels
Classification of EEG recordings by using fast independent component analysis and artificial neural network
Since there is no definite decisive factor evaluated by the experts, visual analysis of EEG signals in time domain may be inadequate. Routine clinical diagnosis requests to analysis of EEG signals. Therefore, a number of automation and computer techniques have been used for this aim. In this study we aim at designing a MLPNN classifier based on the Fast ICA that accurately identifies whether the associated subject is normal or epileptic. By analyzing a data set consisting of 100 normal and 100 epileptic EEG time series, we have found that the MLPNN classifier based on the Fast ICA achieved and sensitivity rate of 98%, and specificity rate of 90.5%. The results demonstrate that the testing performance of the neural network diagnostic system is found to be satisfactory and we think that this system can be used in clinical studies. Since the time series analysis of EEG signals is unsatisfactory and requires specialist clinicians to evaluate, this application brings objectivity to the evaluation of EEG signals

A Determination of Hopelessness and the Perception of Illness in Cancer
This study was performed with the objective of determining hopelessness and perception of illness in cancer patients. This was a descriptive and regressional study. The study was performed between January and June 2014 on 105 outpatients at the oncology clinic of Manisa Government Hospital in Turkey's western. A patient information form, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the illness perception questionnaire were used to collect data, and data analysis was performed using the program Statistical Package for Social Sciences 15.0. Percentages, t test, Kruskal-Wallis, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation were used in the evaluation of research data. The hopelessness levels of cancer patients participating in the study were at a medium level. As patients' scores on the hopelessness scale and its subscales increase, so their illness perception scores also increase. The hopelessness levels of patients whose illness perception was good were lower; that is, as patients' hopelessness levels fell, their illness perceptions and view of their illness were affected in a positive way
Phycoremediation of Phenolphytalein, Indigo Carmine, Methyl Orange and Eriochrome Black T By Using Chlamydomonas and Chlorella sp. (Chlorophyta)
This work aimed to evaluate the decolorization of phenolphthalein (PP), indigo carmine (IC), methyl orange (MO) and eriochrome black T (EBT) by using Chlorella and Chlamydomonas as a biosorbent. This experiment used the batch adsorption method to study the adsorption effect of pH, biomass dosage, contact time, initial dye concentration and temperature on the dyes. The adsorption of the dyes onto the cells were fitted with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The results showed that the optimum conditions for PP removal (99%) was obtained at pH 4, contact time of 120min, 35 degrees C, algal dosage of 0.5 mg/mL and dye concentration of 100 mg/L on to the cells. The sample prepared at 25 degrees C, 120 min, 1 mg/mL algal dosage, 25 mg/L dye concentration and at pH 4 had the best adsorption effect on IC on to the both of cells (99-98%). In addition, the optimum conditions for MO and EBT removal (99-97%) was obtained at pH 2-4, contact time of 30 min, 25 degrees C, algal dosage of 0.5mg/mL and dye concentration of 100mg/L. The results of this study reveal that the algae cells can be utilized as an efficient and eco-friendly biosorbent for the removal of the indicator dyes from aqueous solution
Economic burden of severe asthma in Turkey: a cost of illness study from payer perspective
Objective. To estimate economic burden of severe asthma in Turkey from payer perspective based on expert panel opinion on practice patterns in clinical practice. Methods. This cost of illness study was based on identification of per patient annual direct medical costs for the management of severe asthma in Take, from payer perspective. Average per patient direct medical cost was calculated based on cost items related to outpatient visits laboratory and radiological tests, hospitalizations and interventions drug treatment and equipment, and co-morbidities/complications. Results. Based on total annual per patient costs calculated for outpatient admission ( 8232), hospitalization/interventions (2,289.63) and co-morbidities ( 4,369.76 from payer perspective. Drug treatment/equipment (524%) was the main cost driver in the management of severe asthma in Turkey, as followed by hospitalizations/interventions (264%) and co-morbidities (15.2%). Conclusions. In conclusion, our findings indicate that managing patients with severe asthma pose a considerable burden to health economics in Turkey with medications as the main cost driver
The Effect of a Training Video With Audio Description on the Breast Self-Examinations of Women With Visual Impairments
Introduction: Breast cancer is a significant health problem affecting the health of women globally. Breast self-examination is a procedure applied for the early detection of breast cancer. Given the barriers that women with visual impairments face to access health care and health education, there is a need to develop materials for breast self-examination training as a skills-based practice for this group. This study evaluated the effect of a training video with an audio description on the breast self-examination of women who were visually impaired. Methods: The universe of this quasi-experimental study comprised women who were visually impaired (N = 70) who were registered members of the Manisa Altinokta Blind Association in Turkey. The women who participated in the study volunteered and met the selection criteria (n = 60). They were divided into two groups by lot. The audio description group listened to a breast self-examination training video with an audio description (n = 30). The control group listened to the training video accompanied by typical sound, without audio description (n = 30). Before and after a training video, all women performed breast self-examination on a female mannequin torso. The skills of women in breast self-examination were evaluated using a checklist by a midwife who was non-researcher. Results: The skills differed significantly between the two groups after the video training (p < 0.05). The audio description group correctly performed most of the skills required for breast self-examination. None of the women in the groups were able to apply steps for such self-examination before the training. Discussion: A breast self-examination training video with audio description can improve the self-examination skills of women with visual impairments. Implications for Practitioners: Women with visual impairments benefit from watching a breast self-examination training video with an audio description before performing self-examinations. Training videos with audio descriptions should, therefore, be prepared for the health education of individuals who are visually impaired
Comparative in vitro cytotoxic effects of ornidazole, metronidazole and ciprofloxacin against Trichomonas vaginalis trophozoites
A strain of Trichomonas vaginalis, isolated from a patient complaining of vaginal discharge, was incubated and cultivated to compare the in vitro effects of ornidazole, metronidazole and ciprofloxacin on T. vaginalis trophozoites in terms of minimal inhibition concentrations (MICs) and minimal lethal concentrations (MLCs). MIC levels at 24 hours for ornidazole, metronidazole and ciprofloxacin were 50 mg/mL, 50 mg/mL, and 750 mg/mL. Corresponding MLC levels were the same. In this in vitro study, ornidazole was found to be the most effective drug among 3 drugs tested against T. vaginalis trophozoites in terms of MIC and MLC levels. It is interesting to note that ciprofloxacin, although not as effective as the others, also had some cytotoxic effect on T. vaginalis trophozoites
Impact behaviour of nanomodified deflection-hardening fibre-reinforced concretes
The behaviour of concrete under sudden impact loads is complex. Moreover, very little is known about the impact behaviour of high-performance fibre-reinforced concretes (HPFRCs). To account for this, nanomodified deflection-hardening HPFRC mixtures incorporating coarse aggregates were produced with three ratios of fly ash to Portland cement (0.0, 0.2 and 0.4), three nanomaterials (nanosilica, nano-alumina and nanocalcite) and two hybridised fibre combinations (hooked-end steel with polyvinyl alcohol, or hooked-end steel with brass-coated microsteel) and tested for basic mechanical properties and flexural impact resistance. After experimental testing, beams used in impact testing were modelled using Abaqus. Cubic compressive strength did not change significantly with the differences in mixture parameters, although this was not the case for flexural parameters. For a given fly ash/Portland cement ratio and nanomaterial type, mixtures with hooked-end steel and polyvinyl alcohol fibres exhibited higher displacement and lower flexural strength capacity than those with hooked-end steel and brass-coated microsteel fibres. Nano-alumina contributed best to the development of mechanical properties and impact resistance of HPFRCs, followed by nanosilica and nanocalcite. Results validate the idea that costly polyvinyl alcohol fibres can be fully replaced with brass-coated microsteel fibres without risking mechanical properties and impact resistance, as long as matrix properties are properly controlled
