Effectiveness of magnetic resonance angiography in the evaluation of lung perfusion in constrictive bronchiolitis obliterans
Childhood constrictive bronchiolitis obliterans (CBO) is characterized clinically by the persistence of obstructive respiratory symptoms following a prolonged episode of lower respiratory viral infection. The diagnosis depends on the clinical, radiological and laboratory findings. Perfusion defects on scintigraphy may predict the severity. This report describes a 2-year-old girl who presented with a 15-day history of respiratory distress despite treatment. Auscultation of the lungs revealed prolonged expiration and bilateral crepitant rales. CXR revealed bilateral paracardiac infiltration. She improved with a treatment regimen of bronchodilators, systemic steroids and antibiotherapy; however, rales were detected again 10 days after discharge. HRCT of the lung revealed an oligaemic-mosaic pattern, more prominent in the left lung. The diagnosis of CBO was made on the basis of these clinical and radiological findings. Perfusion was normal in the right lung but diffusely decreased in the left lung on perfusion scintigraphy by Tc99m-MAA. Magnetic resonance (MR) angiography source images of the lungs revealed significant but not diffuse perfusion defects in the left lung, in contrast to radionuclide scintigraphy. There were areas of low perfusion in the right lung, which were not evident in radionuclide scintigraphy. The use of source images of MRI angiography of the lungs may be more sensitive and specific for the detection of perfusion defects in patients with CBO and may assist in determining the prognosis
Immunoexpressions of embryonic and nonembryonic stem cell markers (Nanog, Thy-1, c-kit) and cellular connections (connexin 43 and occludin) on testicular tissue in thyrotoxicosis rat model
In this study, possible thyrotoxicosis-related histological changes in testicular tissues of rats with experimentally induced thyrotoxicosis model were evaluated on cellular connections and stem cell markers. Two experimental groups, thyrotoxicosis and control, each consisting of eight animals were used. Rats in the thyrotoxicosis group were injected intraperitoneally with 3,3,5-triiodo-l-thyronine (50 mu g/100 g body weight/day) for 10 days. At the end of the study, animals in both groups were anesthetized, and blood samples were collected for biochemical analyses. Their testes were dissected out and histological procedure was conducted to perform further histochemical, immunohistochemical analyses and tissue expression analysis by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Expression of the stem cell markers such as c-kit and Thy-1 significantly decreased in the testes of the thyrotoxicosis group compared with the control group; however, Nanog expression was not detected in any of the groups. Similarly, connexin 43 and occludin expressions were also found to be significantly lower in the thyrotoxicosis group. These results on cellular connections are supported with the tissue expression analysis. Our findings are indicative of supporting microenvironmental tissue decay rather than parenchyma damage, which has been actually ignored in the literature. In conclusion, experimental thyrotoxicosis model may have adverse effects on the cell junctional complexes, cell-cell interactions, and pluripotency capacity
On the semiclassical JWKB and MAF solutions of the uniformly lengthening pendulum via change of dependent variable in the Bessel's equation
Semiclassical JWKB method and method of modified Airy functions (MAF) are the fundamental conventional tools in quantum mechanical and optical waveguide systems and yet their classical mechanical applicability has somehow escaped much attention. In this work, semiclassical JWKB and MAF solution of a classical mechanical problem regarding the Lengthening Pendulum (LP) is being studied to reinforce the power of the semiclassical methods in this aspect. Here, JWKB and MAF solutions of the associated Bessel's equation is being obtained by transforming it first into one of the normal forms via change of dependent variable on the contrary to our previous work where change of independent variable was used for the JWKB solution. By the same motivation for the suggested change of dependent variable here, we once again, obtain advantageous results in comparison to the conventional numerical exact solutions given in the literature where adiabatic LP systems with very low lengthening rates are required. We obtain both JWKB and MAF approximated Bessel functions successfully and our semiclassical solutions for the LP system works with a great accuracy even for much higher lengthening rates in comparison to these conventional numerical methods. Here we study under what conditions our semiclassical solutions can give accurate results by using the conventional JWKB and MAF applicability criteria. In effect, the semiclassical JWKB and MAF methods which is normally known to be used in quantum mechanical and optical waveguide systems are being used to solve the pure classical-mechanical LP system successfully and advantageously here and the applicability criteria of these semiclassical methods in terms of the physical LP system parameters are being determined and presented
Observation of Bs0-(B)over-bars0 mixing and measurement of mixing frequencies using semileptonic B decays
The and B (0) mixing frequencies, Delta m (s) and Delta m (d) , are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV during 2011. Around 1.8x10(6) candidate events are selected of the type (+ anything), where about half are from peaking and combinatorial backgrounds. To determine the B decay times, a correction is required for the momentum carried by missing particles, which is performed using a simulation-based statistical method. Associated production of muons or mesons allows us to tag the initial-state flavour and so to resolve oscillations due to mixing. We obtain < The hypothesis of no oscillations is rejected by the equivalent of 5.8 standard deviations for and 13.0 standard deviations for B (0). This is the first observation of mixing to be made using only semileptonic decays
Validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the DSM-5 Separation Anxiety Disorder Severity Scale-child form
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the DSM-5 Separation Anxiety Disorder Severity Scale-Child Form. METHODS: The scale was prepared by carrying out translation and back-translation of the DSM-5 Separation Anxiety Disorder Severity Scale-Child Form. The study group consisted of 41 patients who had been treated in a child psychiatry unit and diagnosed with separation anxiety disorder and 100 healthy volunteers who were attending middle or high school during the study period. For the assessment, Screen for Childhood Anxiety and Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) was also used, along with the DSM-5 Separation Anxiety Disorder Severity Scale-Child Form. RESULTS: The Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient was calculated as 0.932, while the item-total score correlation coefficients were between 0.400 and 0.874. One factor that could explain 63% of the variance was obtained. The scale showed a medium correlation with SCARED. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was calculated as 0.898. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the Turkish version of DSM-5 Separation Anxiety Disorder Severity Scale-Child Form could be used as a valid and reliable tool both in clinical practice and for research purposes
Examining Some Functional Characteristics in Subalpine Pure Oriental Spruce (Picea orientalis (L.) Link) Stands in Turkey
This study was carried out in order to state the functional differences between the pure oriental spruce stands in subalpine zone. In the research, the pure oriental spruce stands in the subalpine zone were evaluated according to their wood production (F1), erosion control (F2), water production (F3), grass productivity-wild life habitat (F4), scenic beauty (F5) and avalanche prevention (F6) functions. Functional characteristics were rated as a scalar value between 1 (the worst) and 5 ( the best) according to some observations, and exact differences were fixed between the functional characteristics of the treeline and the timberline stands. Determinations were realized in total of 46 sampling plots. 23 of the sampling plots were in treeline and 23 of them were in timberline. According to the results the F1, F2 and F6 values in the timberline were more effective than treeline stands. However F3, F4 and F5 values in the treeline were more effective than timber line stands. The average F1 value was 1.22 in the treeline and 3.04 in the timberline, F2 value was 3.0 in treeline and 3.61 in timberline, F3 value was 2.91 in the treeline and 2.43 in the timberline, F4 value was 3.35 in the treeline and 2.74 in the timberline, F5 value was 3.70 in treeline and 3.43 in timberline. Average F6 value was 3.52 in the treeline and 3.57 in the timberline. The functional values from treeline and timberline stands were compared by discriminant analysis and 41 of the sampling plots (89%) were estimated in their real groups
Asthma programmes in diverse regions of the world: challenges, successes and lessons learnt
International surveys have demonstrated that asthma is still underdiagnosed and undertreated in many parts of the world. Despite improvements in the standard of asthma care delivered in many areas, as evidenced by improved global asthma mortality data, much information on projects and programmes undertaken in resource-limited regions of the world is not in the public domain. The aim of this report is to review projects and programmes in diverse regions around the world so that health care providers, planners and consumers may draw on the successes, failures and lessons learnt. Such real world experiences may contribute to achieving Global Initiative for Asthma goals of asthma control. Asthma projects and programmes in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Russia, South Africa and Turkey were discussed by a group of experts in asthma care, the Advancing Asthma Care Network, from their respective countries, over a course of three satellite meetings in 2010. Collective analyses consistently identified low rates of dissemination and implementation of national and international treatment guidelines, low levels of continuing medical education and training of primary health care professionals and access and distribution of inhaled corticosteroids to be major barriers that are critical to the overall success of a national asthma management programme. In the less developed asthma programmes, under-recognition and undertreatment further limited the success of the programmes. Evidence from well-established national asthma management programmes suggests that establishment of a successful programme entails a logical progression through specific developmental stages, starting with political/stakeholder endorsement and commitment, followed by epidemiological evaluation, evaluation of disease burden, evaluation of access to care and best therapy, and finally optimisation and maintenance therapy for individual patients
NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF THERMAL AND FRICTION CHARACTERISTICS OF TURBULENT FLOW THROUGH A CIRCULAR TUBE WITH PLATE INSERTS
In this study, a plate-type turbulator placed in a circular tube and analysis of the turbulators with different pitches and different fin angles formed on the plate were investigated numerically. Heat transfer performance and friction factor were investigated for Reynolds number 4000-30,000 for each type of turbulator. The basic conservation equations are solved in the steady state in 3D under the turbulent flow conditions by using the ANSYS Fluent commercial code with the realizable k-e turbulence model based on the finite volume method. Numerical analysis results were obtained in the study conducted according to different flow rates of air. As a result of the analysis, it was observed that the Nusselt number increased depending on the Reynolds number as the fin pitch distance became shorter and the fin angle increased. The use of each turbulator provided thermal improvement compared to the empty heat exchanger, and the highest thermal performance was obtained with the Modj 60 degrees turbulator at a rate of 208.57%. In addition, the effects of the obtained temperature contours and velocity vectors on the flow characteristics of the turbulator in the heat exchanger were investigated
Seawater effect on consistency limits and compressibility characteristics of clays
The reported results in the literature indicate that there is a discrepancy regarding seawater effect on the consistency limits and compressibility properties of clayey soils having relatively low and high plasticity. To clarify this discrepancy, consistency limits including liquid, plastic and shrinkage limits, sediment volume and compressibility characteristics of ten soils were tested using distilled water and natural seawater from the Aegean Sea. The results indicate that the effect of seawater is negligible on the tested consistency limits and compressibility characteristics of soils when they have liquid limits up to 110%. The seawater effect is most noticed on the consistency limits and compressibility of Na-bentonites. The results of previous research were compiled and compared with those obtained in this study. All reported data were normalized by dividing the index values obtained using seawater by those obtained using distilled water. The comparison of data indicate that the compiled data and present study data are in good agreement, i.e. when the normalized values are plotted as function of liquid limit, all index properties plot along the unity line until the liquid limit of soils is about 110%; then, the normalized index values decrease almost linearly with liquid limit. Extremely Rare Cause of Ventriculo-Peritoneal (V-P) Shunt Dysfunction: Spontaneous Peritoneal Catheter Knotting
Shunt application is one of the most common treatment method for hydrocephalus. Many complications have been reported in literature for ventricular and peritoneal catheters and shunt valve. Spontaneous knotting of peritoneal catheter is an extremely rare condition. Mechanism of knotting is still unclear and peristaltism, elasticity of shunt materials, intraabdominal density, length of the peritoneal catheter and surgical technique may be responsible factors. In this paper, we presented a peritoneal catheter knotting resulted in shunt dysfunction in an 8-year-old girl. During surgery, we removed the peritoneal catheter, untied the knot and placed in the peritoneum again
