Serum hepatitis B DNA: stability in relation to multiple freeze-thaw procedures

    No full text
Quantitation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA is often performed in specimens that have been frozen and thawed more than once. It is important to establish whether viral load measurements are affected by repeated freeze-thaw cycles. The effect of multiple freeze-thaw cycles on HBV DNA quantitation was carried out by testing serum specimens subjected to I (baseline) to 10 cycles with the appropriate Digene Hybrid Capture System. Five HBV DNA-positive samples were selected at random from sera with concentrations ranging from 7 pg/ml to 3529 pg/ml and they were frozen and thawed up to 10 cycles and then tested for changes in HBV DNA levels. Negative control and positive standards were tested in triplicate; and all specimens were tested in duplicate. The stability of HBV DNA in serum was evaluated by scattergrarn analysis by determining the number of samples showing a greater than or equal to20% change in HBV DNA levels after freeze-thaw cycles. With the exception of one sample (7 pg/ml) 10 cycles of freezing and thawing did not change significantly the HBV DNA quantity in any of the samples tested. The results showed that the quantity of HBV DNA in four of five serum specimens subjected up to 10 freeze-thaw cycles was stable. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Approximation of Continuous Periodic Functions of Two Variables via Power Series Methods of Summability

    No full text
We prove a Korovkin-type approximation theorem via power series methods of summability for continuous 2-periodic functions of two variables and verify the convergence of approximating double sequences of positive linear operators by using modulus of continuity. An example concerning double Fourier series is also constructed to illustrate the obtained results

Assessing safety and efficacy of TNFi treatment in late onset ankylosing spondylitis: a TURKBIO registry study

    No full text
Clinical data on the use of tumour necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) in late-onset ankylosing spondylitis (LoAS) are limited. The present study aimed to evaluate efficacy, safety, and treatment adherence associated with the initial use of TNFi therapy in biologic naive patients diagnosed with LoAS. Patients whose age of onset was >= 45 years and < 45 years were classified as having LoAS and YoAS, respectively, based on the age of symptom onset. There were 2573 patients with YoAS and 281 LoAS. Baseline disease activity measures were similar between the groups. No significant differences were seen between the two groups in response to treatment and in remaining on the first TNFi at 6, 12 and 24 months. In the LoAS group, the analysis showed that TNFi discontinuation was linked to VAS pain score (HR 1.04; 95% CI 1.01-1.06). Patient groups had similar rates of adverse events (YoAS: 8.7% vs. LoAS: 11.7%). In both biologic naive LoAS and YoAS patients, the study showed that the initial TNFi therapy was equally effective and safe

Entropy generation in a pipe due to non-Newtonian fluid flow: Constant viscosity case

    No full text
Non-Newtonian fluid flow in a pipe system is considered and a third grade non-Newtonian fluid is employed in the analysis. The velocity and temperature distributions across the pipe are presented. Entropy generation number due to heat transfer and fluid friction is formulated. The influences of non-Newtonian parameter and Brinkman number on entropy generation number are examined. It is found that increasing the non-Newtonian parameter reduces the fluid friction in the region close to the pipe wall. This in turn results in low entropy generation with increasing non-Newtonian parameter. Increasing Brinkman number enhances the fluid friction and heat transfer rates; in which case, entropy number increases with increasing Brinkman number

Yttrium tantalate (YTaO4), yttrium niobium-tantalate (YTaNbO4), yttrium niobate (YNbO4), europium and terbium activated yttrium tantalate (YTaO4:Eu, YTaO4:Tb) and europium activated yttrium niobate (YNbO4:Eu) phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction, from a homogeneous mixture consisting of Y2O3, Eu2O3, Tb4O7, Ta2O5, Nb2O5 and Na2SO4 as flux. Photoluminescence (PL), thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of yttrium tantalate based phosphors are reported. In the present study TSL characteristics of these phosphors were first investigated and reported after exposure to beta, UV (311 nm) and X-ray radiations. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

On the solution of Poisson equation by alternating group explicit iterative method

    No full text
In this paper the alternating group explicit (AGE) iterative methods which are modified analogues of the classical alternating direction implicit (ADI) methods, are introduced. Poisson equation is transformed a linear system using suitably finite difference equations and also the solution of this system is done with AGE methods. Numerical extraordinary results are obtained by using Maple V computer programming. (c) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

Eligibility of Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) modulator therapies: cohort of cystic fibrosis registry of Türkiye

    No full text
Background. Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) variants are essential for determining eligibility for CFTR modulator drugs (CFTRms). In contrast to Europe and the USA, the treatment eligibility profile of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients in Türkiye is not known. In this study we aimed to determine the eligibility of CF patients in Türkiye for the CFTRms. Methods. The Cystic Fibrosis Registry of Türkiye (CFrT) data was used to determine the age of patients in the year 2021 and the genetic variants they were carrying. Age-and CFTR-variant appropriate modulator therapies were determined using the Vertex® algorithm. Results. Among a total of 1930 registered patients, CTFR gene analysis was performed on a total of 1841 (95.4%) patients. Mutations were detected in one allele in 10.7% (198 patients), and in both alleles in 79% (1455 patients) of patients. A total of 855 patients (51.7% for whom at least 1 mutation was detected) were eligible for the drugs. The most appropriate drug among genotyped patients was found to be elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor for 486 patients (26.4%), followed by ivacaftor for 327 patients (17.7%) and lumacaftor/ivacaftor for 42 patients (2%). Conclusions. Only half of patients registered in CFrT were eligible for CFTRms, which is a significant difference from the CFTR variant profile seen in USA and Europe. However, access to treatment is hampered for some patients whose genes are not analysed. Further studies in CF populations, where rare mutations are relatively more common, will contribute to the field of CFTR modulator treatments for such rare mutations. © 2025 The Author(s)

The association of apolipoprotein E polymorphism and Lipid levels in children with a family history of premature coronary artery disease

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Polymorphisms in the apolipoprotein E (apoE) gene may modulate lipoprotein metabolism and influence plasma lipid levels. Thus, they have been associated with relative risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of apolipoprotein E polymorphism and lipid levels in children with family history of premature coronary artery disease. METHODS: The apoE genotypes, allele frequencie,s and plasma lipid levels were analyzed in 137 children. Among these children, 70 (study group) had and 67 (control group) did not have a parental history of premature CAD RESULTS: Total cholesterol (TO levels were greater in the study group (P = .04). The frequencies of epsilon 3 epsilon 4 genotype and epsilon 4 allele were significantly greater in the study group (P = 005 for both), The epsilon 2 allele correlated negatively with Tc and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, and e4 had a positive correlation with Tc and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. CONCLUSIONS: Tc levels are influenced by apoE genotypes in childhood. Also, the frequency of the epsilon 4 allele is greater in children with family history of premature CAD. The e4 allele may be associated with an increased risk for development of atherosclerosis by elevated levels of Tc in children with family history of CAD. The evaluation of apoE gene polymorhisms may contribute to the assessment of cardiovascular risk in children with a family history of CAD. (C) 2012 National Lipid Association. All rights reserved

Effect of Dipping Number on Morphology of Ta2O5 Coatings Made by Sol-Gel Method on AZ91 Mg Alloy

    No full text
The study involves the characterization of the Ta2O5 coated AZ91 Magnesium (Mg) alloys produced using the sol-gel method. Mg alloys have a serious potential for use in orthopedic applications due to their lightness and mechanical properties close to the mechanical properties of human bone. However, their corrosion resistance is insufficient for long-term use within the body. Tantalum (Ta), on the other hand, is an element with a high corrosion resistance and does not create a toxic effect on the body thanks to the oxide layer formed on its surface. In this study, it was aimed to cover Ta2O5 in different dipping numbers with the sol-gel method on AZ91 Mg alloys produced by powder metallurgy method and to investigate the effect of this change on the morphology of the coatings. After the samples were coated in different dipping numbers, the change in their morphology was examined using electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). As a result of the study, it was observed that the distance between the islets was shortened in the cracked structures encountered in the sol-gel method. With the increasing number of dipping, samples with an average coating thickness of 1, 3 and 7 mu m were produced and a more homogeneous coating structure was created on the surface
